01. JENNIFER GESIMONDO Things to know about me: I am a die-hard Yankees fan. I LOVE chocolate and chunky jewelry. I can’t stand cats. I am co-owner of TFJ and run it with one of my best friends in the whole world! I was a sports writer for my college paper and now write about fashion. My hopes and dreams: to one day build TFJ up to Vogue or Vanity Fair “level,” to be able to hire a staff to help us out and to have a great working environment for my family and friends to contribute to. Oh, yeah, and to be able to afford season box seats at Yankee Stadium.

02. PETRA VINCENT Ok, I’m going to make this as quick and painless as I possibly can. Co-Founder/Creative Director/Web developer/Publisher/Night Owl are just a few titles that I’m going by this week. I am the other half of the dynamic duo who expose you to the great inspirations you read about in TFJ. I am responsible for the function and theory, in other words, the “HOW” to Editor-In-Chief Jen Gesimondo’s “WHAT.”

As the Fashion Editor for TFJ, I live and breathe fashion and give it back to you in all the best finds that are out there. My specialty is web scouting, I can find just about anything on the Internet. You name it, I can email it to you in under 2 minutes!
06. JEN GOLD It’s thrilling to be a part of TFJ and to help contribute to the vision of promoting emerging designers of all kinds. I live in Chicago and love the energy of the Second City. he’s an actor, a musician, and a breath of fresh air. Nora Kirkpatrick is one of the few people who can be found customarily dressing in not only what is the most comfortable, but also what she feels best represents her own personality and style. She takes her style seriously, but at the same time is always open to new ideas. “I wouldn’t say I’m too safe about fashion,” she points out. “I like to go with what I’m feeling every day, get crazy, and not feel weird about it.” Nora classifies her style as “thrifty,” and she doesn’t use designer labels to express her personality. “I’m more into things at goodwill or at St. Vincent’s thrift store downtown [in Los Angeles],” she says. “I don’t buy many new clothes.” She takes advantage of the time she spends on tour with the 10-piece band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, [12] the fashion journal_Summer 2010
with whom she plays the accordion. “When we’re on tour its such a great way to get clothes from all over the country,” she says. “When we’re travelling, it’s nice to see the cross section of the country through local style.” Nora has had an interest in music since an early age. She participated in musical theater when she was growing up in Iowa, and graduated from UCLA with a degree in theater. Since then, she’s been balancing a career in both acting and performing music professionally. She recently appeared in 13 episodes of the ABC comedy Greek, and is set to begin filming season four this month. Last year she also filmed the comedy How to Make Love to a Woman. Initially a piano player, Nora’s interest in the accordion grew when she was looking to be more mobile. “People would pick up and have jam sessions, and as a piano player I was kind of out of the loop. I’ve
“I WOULDN'T SAY I'M TOO SAFE ABOUT FASHION. I LIKE TO GO WITH WHAT I'M FEELING EVERY DAY, GET CRAZY, AND NOT FEEL WEIRD ABOUT IT." always been intrigued by the accordion. It is central in so many different countries and different types of music. I just picked it up and took some lessons, and I fell in love with it.” After meeting members of Edward Sharpe, Nora decided to join the band. Over time her musical style evolved from (what she refers to as) the “over the top” world of musical theater into folk music. “I don’t want to call it Indie music, but it’s definitely not the mainstream,” she explains, trying to pinpoint exactly what her niche is.
She best classifies her ensemble’s music as orchestral rock, but after hearing them play, it’s obvious that it’s not easy to sum up Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros in just a few words. Whatever you want to call it, it was a big hit at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival where the band had a chance to perform for a crowd of thousands on April 17. “Coachella was great. I went to high school there for two years, so I’ve always gone to Coachella, and I knew a lot of people who were there.” While on stage, Nora usually likes to wear dresses, both because they’re more comfortable to move around in and also because she enjoys that “there is something respectful about making it an occasion.” Recently, Nora has been expanding her horizons even further. When she was invited by 944 to be a part of a feature on female musicians, they asked her to be the art director of the photo shoot as well. Nora ended up staying on for the whole series, which was recently completed. She also wrapped up a short film called Long Story Short, which she is also currently starring in. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros begin their summer tour this month, traveling across the United States and parts of Canada. Look for the girl holding the accordion, and wearing the clothes she loves. H

THE SEVEN BAR FOUNDATION, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization driven by luxury fashion shows, co-branded products, Pokeware technology and microfinance, raises funds globally for microfinance institutes by creating awareness of microfinance as a poverty alleviation tool for women all over the world. Seven Bar is the first philanthropic brand collaborating with the luxury consumer industry to raise funds for microfinance to assist women in the United States living below the poverty line. Each activity produces consistent revenue streams that perpetuate the brand’s mission: to fund exit strategies out of poverty for women and to create a new era of philanthropy, independent of charitable donations, using the power of branding. The "bars" in the logo represent a ladder, which symbolizes a hand-up and not hand-out. Microfinance enables women with the tools to create an exit strategy out of poverty and allows them to become self-sufficient down the road. The Seven Bar Foundation has also recently partnered with International beauty brand Fusion Beauty to “Kiss
Away Poverty” with the launch of Fusion Beauty’s limited edition LipFusion “Luxe Boudoir” Capsule Collection with four new LipFusion® Radiant Shimmer Color Shine shades to commemorate their partnership. THE “LUXE BOUDOIR” CAPSULE COLLECTION contains four brand new, highimpact, vibrant LipFusion Color Shines with shimmer effect designed in collectible limited edition packaging featuring the iconic Seven Bar Foundation “Lingerie New York” model etched in to each tube. The spring-inspired colors include Vixen a shimmering mauve, Lolita an innocent baby pink, Coquette a flirty rosy coral and Princess a shimmery plum. FusionBeauty successfully launched “Kiss Away Poverty” in September 2009, which donates one dollar from every sale of LipFusion Infatuation™ and LipFusion Clear and Color Shines to the Foundation, raising over $103.5K in just four months. Slated to run through February 2010, due to the success of the campaign and desire to continue to support those in need, FusionBeauty will extend the “Kiss Away Poverty” campaign through Fall of 2010.

What inspires you when designing? I am always inspired by the human body; by the muscular and skeletal systems, by the way we move. I am fascinated by elements that I find creepy; anything that makes us look twice, things that appear to be other than what they are. When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? These garments were created between November 2009 and May 2010. I was inspired specifically by my experimentations in textile manipulation, in this case felting, pleating, and heat setting of different textiles, and the juxtaposition of the different elements.

RACHEL DRUMMOND DREXEL UNIVERSITY
What inspires you when designing? I find inspiration in everything, particularly nature, science and historic culture. I love learning about pieces of each of these topics, such as evolution or molecules, and applying them to fashion to visually share what really moves me. When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? These pieces, from my senior collection, made over the past six months, are inspired by the bone structure of dinosaurs, encasing the women in hipbones, ribs, vertebrae and teeth. I applied structured draping, tailoring and sculpted crinoline to provide the strength of the bones, in harmony with beading and chain details, to create more of a delicate look.

KOCAYNE S. GIVNER DREXEL UNIVERSITY
What inspires you when designing? I am inspired by rigid structures that appear to have a soft feel. For example, the main inspiration behind my graduate thesis designs is a Russian wind dam. A large sail-like structure made of white metal located on a dike between tree covered hills. The colors and contrast between nature and technology allow for endless ideas. When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? My designs include various cool colors and materials as well as layering and gathering to help create a sense of volume, while adding visual interest to otherwise simple silhouettes. Cotton, denim, polyester and mesh were all used and created during the 2010 academic year.

What inspires you when designing? I was inspired by Scottish fabrics and the drama of European Haute Couture. When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? I created these pieces earlier this year in a structural design class. I was inspired by the drama of the red carpet, European monarchs and wearable art. I used wool suiting for the main fabric and metal wires to keep the rolls structured. Also, I inserted canvas into the rolls to make them stiff.

Song Lee Han, 26, moved from South Korea to Chicago to pursue her love for fashion at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Song studied fiber in her undergraduate program, (at the University of Hawaii at Honolulu), which serves as a personal characteristic of her style as a designer. Delicate textures and details in garments are her signature style and act as a tribute to the concept of female rights in society. The belief in the potential and power of fashion to act as a message about social injustices in society, serves as the main force in Song’s collections. Famous figures such as Lucy Orta and Hussain Chalayan help guide her personal goal to become both an artist and designer that is a positive influence for people.

What inspires you when designing? Each collection has a different inspiration; some are based on visual components, some simply from words or combinations of words. As a fine arts and textile designer, I love doing research and finding my inspirations from areas of science, philosophy, art movements, worldwide street fashion and the natural world. When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? These garments were hand-knit in 2009 with yarns of many different fiber contents, (rayon blends, cotton, wool blends, etc.) The inspiration for color, texture and shape is from ancient arts and metallurgy -Minoan, Sumerian and ancient African metal masks and jewelry, stone idols and god/ goddess sculptures and armor. the fashion journal _ Summer 2010 [33]
LAUREN C. GATTO PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
What inspires you when designing? My inspiration comes from my travels. I have been to over 15 different countries and have experienced many unique cultures. I feel as if I take a piece of each country everywhere I go. They are a part of me and naturally develop in my work. When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? This is a handwoven collection for the UK women’s apparel company Monsoon. It was inspired by the actress Scarlett Johansson. I created it in Fall 2008, when I studied abroad in Galashiels, Scotland.

PRATT INSTITUTE
What inspires you when designing? I believe that the beauty of jewelry ultimately lies in aesthetic quality over monetary value. Regardless of the value of a piece or the customer’s wealth, my patrons wear my bold attentiongrabbing forms as portable symbols of realized individual power.
What inspires you when designing? I approach jewelry from the point of view of a sculptor. I make small-scale, body-oriented sculptures that depict various types of scientific imagery. Most recently, I have been interested in diatoms, a class of microscopic algae. My thesis collection is a visual study of diatoms that translates the various methods botanists use to depict them (microscope imaging, botanical illustration), through materiality.
When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? The familiar disposable objects – including a Q-Tip, coffee sleeve, potato chip, toothpick and orange peel - in the 2009-2010 Rescued Refuse collection - reflect my view that any object has the potential to be beautiful. The throwaways are disguised by centrifugal casting, patination and metalsmithing fabrication into exact or altered metal replicas, not beyond recognition, in the form of wearable ornaments.
When did you create these pieces and what materials and construction techniques did you employ? The work presented here is a selection of my thesis work, completed between fall 2009 and spring 2010. Each piece represents a different species of diatom algae and is constructed from fabricated sterling silver, carved acrylic plastic and colored epoxy resin.

What inspires you when designing? The components of leaves as seen on the microscopic level and the repetitive nature of these forms such as the delicate veins, textures, and intricate patterns, visible even in the rust and decay.
What inspires you when designing? I was inspired by a Swedish fashion designer/artist, Sandra Backlund, who approaches fashion from the perspective of a sculptor. Her pieces are predominantly knitted and very voluptuous, and empowering. I was infatuated by her ability to depict the infinite possibilities of yarn and to sculpt areas of volume over the body.
What materials and construction techniques did you employ? This brooch was created in November of 2009, and it follows the “Spongy Parenchyma pattern found in leaves. What intrigued me about this pattern was the circular design, where you could fit circles inside circles and when brought together, they seemed to fit perfectly. Silver was my metal of choice.

What materials and construction techniques did you employ? The shape of the casted gold elements on the mohair is inspired by her shoulder piece. (Materials: mohair fabric on the front, lamb leather on the back, stuffing, casted elements. Techniques: wax-carving, hand-sewing, machine-sewing.)

THE TWENTYTEN This season, the twentyten started with the British occupation of India and the idea of military influences with drapeier, less constructed pieces. The collection grew into the idea of tactile fabrications and garments that felt like they had been touched and worked with before the wearer owned them. The designers created kinetic, textural pieces that utilized yarn, faux fur, and hair, and as always played with draping and structural elements in the same garment to contrast the everyday with the unexpected.

AAMAYA by Priyanka Aamaya by Priyanka is an exciting new couture label combining contemporary feminine tailoring from the west with eastern influences. The label originally launched in Europe in April 2008 and is spearheaded by designer Priyanka Lugani. With her background lying largely in design and luxury branding, and her family’s long-standing involvement in the textile industry, Priyanka has been able to mold her knowledge of fabrication and textiles to create two beautiful collections of couture meets readyto-wear. The result is vibrant, decorative clothing that portrays an image of playful, yet glamourous femininity. With attention to detail and the use of high quality fabrics and workmanship, the range is young and accessible and
can be worn day into night. Luxurious fabrics from Europe are combined with delicate Middle Eastern beading with a vibrant colour palate from the orient. Aamaya by Priyanka is aimed at young stylish global women, (think style icon Olivia Palermo), who want a capsule wardrobe of understated luxurious pieces for day, with some major statement pieces for evenings. The clothing line is complemented by a stunning range of handmade chunky gold plated statement jewelry made from semi-precious stones that include amethyst, rose quartz, turquoise and citrine. Priyanka’s line has already been featured in Vogue and Marie Claire (Germany), and is sold at cult boutique Trilogy, in London as well as other London stores. H

[Q&A] MAKEUP!
ELAN BONGIORNO Q&A
Interview by LISA RICHARDSON
Enjoué, pronounced (an-joo-ay) and the French word meaning playful, is the perfect name for celebrity makeup artist, Elan Bongiorno’s new beauty line. Understanding the need to simplify women’s beauty routines, Bongiorno’s ultra modern boutique collection of colorful cosmetics makes its debut and boasts a full line of colorful palettes for easy custom blending. TFJ got to sit down with artist and philanthropist Bongiorno, who showed us that true beauty begins on the inside. How did you get your start as a makeup artist? It’s something that I’ve dreamed about from a very young age. I began as a hair stylist in New York City and later signed with Trelise, a clothing designer, where I worked for 15 years. Why did you name your makeup line Enjoué? My husband actually helped me with the name. We were flipping through a French dictionary and found Enjoué which means playful. It was exactly what I was looking for. Women love to play with cosmetics and I wanted to create just that: A playful sense of beauty. What was the inspiration for your line? I felt that there was a gap and a need in the makeup world. Enjoué reflects everything that I learned in the industry. After years of development, I feel that this line is a true extension of myself and will help women create classic, stylish beauty. How did you develop your color palettes? I wanted the color coordination to be simple. I started with the best ingredients and began to blend color pigments. All of our products help illuminate the skin without making it feel sparkly. I wanted my palettes to contain colors that every woman could wear
and blend easily. Like most women, I have a busy life and I wanted to create a line that was quick, convenient and simple. Can you tell me a little more about your philanthropy project, Beauty Against Violence? I knew that when I started Enjoué, I wanted to be involved in the community on an emotional and physical level. Beauty Against Violence allows me to do just that. I’ve worked with domestic violence shelters such as Haven Hills for years, and whenever I can, I visit the shelters and give the women make up tips and let them try out my cosmetics. The Beauty Against Violence campaign was created to increase awareness, raise money and assist the lives and spirit of beautiful women and children of domestic abuse. Women also love working with cosmetics; it’s our common thread. I also team up with Salons and Shelters, which hosts beauty events and sells products through our website to raise money for the shelters. Social causes have been important to me from the beginning and since I have the ability to reach so many women, I try to do all that I can. I love what I do and I love working with real women. What is one piece of beauty advice you can offer to women? Keep it simple! I often see women and just want to give them a make-”under.” It’s all in the application and technique. Applying to much makeup doesn’t protect your skin and sometimes makes you look older. Using basic colors and simple skills is all that you need to create a classic look that works for you. [Q&A] WARDROBE!
MICHELLE Q&A SIWY
Interview by LISA RICHARDSON
“Jeans.” For some women, just hearing the word sends them running for the hills. Searching for the perfect pair can be daunting and tiring. But once you find them, you know you’re set! An expert on this topic, and someone who knows a great deal about this fashion challenge, is Michelle Siwy. Her denim collection, adequately named “Siwy,” offers jeans for every woman. TFJ recently had a chance to sit down with Michelle to get a sneak peek into the world of Siwy denim. When did you begin designing clothing? I started designing in 1999 in NYC. In early 2004, I decided to launch my own denim line with our first delivery in the Spring of 2005. Have you always wanted to work solely with denim? I love and respect all areas of design, fashion and creating. I am by nature a very curious person, so when I started playing with denim I was hooked on all the possibilities. We actually do work with other fabrics and materials other than just denim and have plans to expand Siwy into a full collection. How did you get involved in the world of fashion? I always knew that I wanted to be a part of it and after studying fashion magazines from an early age, I had a feeling that there was something more that I could offer to this industry. So, after transferring between universities, I ended up at FIT in NYC. What would you be doing if you weren’t a designer? I’d probably be a singer/song writer, although I can’t sing. I’m often asked if I’m a ballerina and that’s something I would love to do as well. [82] the fashion journal_Summer 2010
What has been your favorite fashion experience thus far? When I first moved to NY, Isaac Mizrahi gave me a thumbs up from his cab after scanning my outfit. It was on the corner of 14th St. and 7th Ave. I’ll never forget that. Who are some of your favorite designers? Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, Isabel Marant, Balmain, VPL…. In your opinion, what is the biggest Denim “Don’t”? Jeggings, the kind with no pockets; just seems lazy. I also think bad fitting jeans that are too big or too small; you can look bigger than you really are. What’s the best way to shop for denim and how do you find the best fit for your body? By knowing your body and finding a fit that makes you feel amazing. Trying everything on to find that “perfect fit” is really important. Every girl can find a perfect jean from Siwy for their body type and we love making girls feel happy and great about themselves. H

2. Any future projects that are in pre-production or that you’re working on? I worked on an independent Western feature film titled, The Legend of Hells Gate, around Thanksgiving of 2009. It should be released in the next year, but in the meantime the trailer can be found at www.thelegendofhellsgate.com. It was an absolute blast to work on! And who would’ve known that fake mustaches were so much fun to wear?
3. A quick quote about your sense of style and clothing? Ahhh..this one’s easy. My go-to outfit is an old pair of jeans, a simple t-shirt, (under no circumstances is bedazzling acceptable), and a pair of old trusty sneakers.

[INTRODUCING]
JAMES MASLOW Hollywood’s newest rising star, and NICKELODEON’s soon-tobe biggest heartthrob, James Maslow, is a singer, dancer and actor that stars in the new musical comedy series, “Big Time Rush.” The series is about a four-member boy band created from an “American Idol” style talent search and includes singing, dancing, drama and comedy.
1. What project(s) are you currently working on? I’m filming a show and recording an album with Big Time Rush. The show is on Nickelodeon where I play James Diamond, a driven but often air headed kid, who’s biggest dream is to be a famous pop star. And the album is under Columbia Records. It will feature songs from the show, and then a few extras that will only be heard and sung by the band and myself, not our characters. There’s a fine line between the show and the band sometimes, especially since we share the name “Big Time
Rush”, but it’s fun getting to perform in real life and as a character on the show. One’s just a little more goofy than the other.
2. Is there anything that you’re working on for the future? I did a cameo in a film called URFRENZ that’s currently circling several festivals such as Slamdance and Method Fest, where it continues to get recognized with many nominations. Also, I have plans to work on a film very soon, but I can’t say much more at this time.
3. So, describe your sense of style and clothing. I like to wear all kinds of things. Often, when I’m not working, you’ll see me in Jeans or board shorts and a tee, or something laid back. When I want to look a little nicer though, I’ll wear v-necks under blazers, or the old vest and button up look. Some of my favorite brands are Rock & Republic, Creative Rec, Armani Exchange, French Connection, John Varvatos and Diesel.
