Polytechnic: Rigorous Academics, Responsibility P

olytechnic School, a collegepreparatory school established in 1907, is dedicated to the education of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It is a school founded on the principles of academic excellence, personal and communal responsibility, and service to others. As a community of learning, Poly expects all members to be engaged actively in the quest for knowledge and understanding. The school seeks students who are inquisitive and motivated to learn, faculty who are passionate about their fields of study, and staff who are devoted to supporting the educational mission of the school. A central focus of Poly is to offer a strong and rigorous academic program that is responsive to the developmental and learning needs of our students. Small

classes, which encourage deep student-faculty interaction, facilities that enhance the ability of the faculty to teach, and opportunities for faculty development are essential ingredients in the academic enterprise. Integral to the education

experience at Poly are activities beyond the classroom, including athletics, outdoor education, community outreach, and the visual and performing arts. Through these programs, students explore and develop additional skills and interests that stretch them both

physically and mentally. Teachers, coaches and administrators who understand the vital link between these activities and classroom learning, promote collaboration, leadership and respect for the world beyond the school. The foundation on which the educational mission of the school rests is the commitment to respect every member of the community. Poly values both the character of each individual and the larger sense of community in which the individual may grow and flourish. The Poly community appreciates the cultural, ethnic and economic diversity present in the Pasadena area and strives to reflect it. The school provides a welcoming environment to all students and their families. Members of the Poly community appreciate and learn from individual differences, and embody

courtesy and compassion. A Poly education encourages students to become intellectual leaders, who are prepared to become contributing and responsible citizens in their communities. The school expects to develop in its students a joy for learning, an appreciation for the value of friendship, a lifelong relationship with the school and the commitment to be of service to others. The goal of Poly is to have graduates prepared to meet the complexities of a changing world with confidence and good character.

Flintridge Prep Opens School Year With Optimistic Outlook A

drive-thru Book Day is not what the Flintridge Prep faculty and administration had hoped for, but even before Gov. Newsom announced in July that private and public schools in L.A. County would not open for hybrid learning, plans were underway to make the day special with gifts and surprises for students and their parents in addition to the usual haul of textbooks. Part of the plan includes the presence of Jim Pickett, who will greet families in his first official appearance as head of school.

“The resiliency of our students is truly remarkable. I’ve heard tremendous stories of students supporting each other through the spring and summer,” he said. “I’ve seen the creativity and academic quality of the work students did in the spring and in our online summer school. The instinct to provide mutual support, the tenacity to do the difficult work — these are signs of a healthy, strong community. To say I’m excited for the year ahead is an understatement.” In his opening letter to

families, Pickett reinforced the feeling of optimism, noting that the administration has been preparing equally for three possible schooling options since the spring. “The quality of the planning the administration has done since March is remarkable,” Pickett noted. “So much care has gone into every detail, including a new school schedule that gives order to each day. The schedule will allow faculty time for collaboration, give students downtime, and integrate time for advising and opportunities for each grade to interact. “Our faculty are creative and smart, and they know how to respond to the challenges of teaching online. But most importantly, they have exceptional hearts, so they can see each student as an individual, even when distance poses obstacles,” said Pickett. “The faculty are ready to move to a hybrid model of learning as soon as officials say we can, and we’re all looking forward to a safe return to school.” In the new school year, faculty will be teaching within the recently completed Bachmann Collaboration Building, which houses an art studio, makerspace, science lab, conference spaces and classrooms for students in all grades, and emphasizes collaborative teaching and interdisciplinary learning. Pickett, who joins Prep from Castilleja in Palo Alto, where

he was head of the upper school for eight years, also praised his leadership team, including

Jim Pickett

Sarah Cooper, assistant head for Academic Life, and Vanessa Walker-Oakes, assistant head for Student Life, for providing him with the foundation and support he needs to lead the school. “With the help of the leadership team, I am looking forward to getting to know the community and building on the success of the school,” Pickett noted.

ayfield Senior School, which recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of its central building, has been nurturing formidable leaders in an all-girls environment for decades. From nationwide robotics competitions to local volunteering projects, Mayfield fosters a sense of joyful discovery in every challenge. No one could have predicted the challenges of 2020, but Mayfield’s distinctive spirit is rooted in the educational approach of its founder, Cornelia Connelly, a 19th-century nun committed to “meeting the wants of the age.” Current events have required nimble approaches, but as the “wants of the age” continue to change, Mayfield’s faculty, staff and students continue to adapt and excel, embodying the school’s

motto: “Actions Not Words.” Mayfield’s standout initiatives include: Recent investment in STEM offerings, with eight new courses, including AP chemistry, anatomy and kinesiology. Accolades in national math and robotics competitions. Multiple sections of AP

and honors classes in computer science, chemistry and physics, with stellar passage rates. The Conservatory for the Arts, which offers acclaimed programming in vocal music, creative writing, visual arts, theater, dance, instrumental music and technical theater. volleyball, soccer, softball, basketball, cross country, golf, equestrian, badminton, swim and dive, and water polo. An energetic campus ministry program focused on Catholic social justice teaching. An expanded “service-learning” program reinvigorated the volunteer model inside the theology curriculum, engaging with the academic and transformative aspects of service. Golden Opportunity to Flourish at St. Francis S

t. Francis is thrilled to welcome both new and returning Golden Knights to the 2020-21 school year. We know that this year’s return is anything but normal. Face coverings, physical distancing, limited gatherings and other current health guidelines dictated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have created a “new normal” that is quite different from what all of us have experienced in the past. So many things remain outside of our control. However, our St. Francis family is resilient, creative and adaptable. Together, we will continue to offer the high quality of education that has been our hallmark for the last 75 years. We know that our Golden Knights are up to

Father Tony Marti

the task of demonstrating excellent academic performance, reflecting on our Franciscan virtues, learning Capuchin Franciscan spirituality, and building strong character, compassion and brotherhood. Truth be told, our Golden Knights inspire

us by their tenacity, resilience and joyful hearts in the midst of these unprecedented challenges in their young lives. We know that their convictions, desire to succeed and stamina through adversity will help them to grow into great men. During this uncertain time, the health and safety of our students, families and employees remains our top priority. In compliance with state and local mandates, we recently announced our intent to open the school year online through 100% distance learning. Our faculty and staff members have planned and prepared for this method of instruction and are ready to deliver an exemplary level of education

Tom Moran

to the students. Simultaneously, we continue to plan and prepare for an eventual pivot to our initial reopening plan and hybrid model of learning. St. Francis’ COVID-19 Compliance Team will determine, in collaboration with state and local health department officials, when and how we can implement our hybrid model of learning to meet the unique needs and circumstances of our school community. This school year, we look forward to celebrating the 75th anniversary of our Capuchin Franciscan approach to education. In the fall of 1946, on the site of the former Flintridge Country Club, Capuchin Franciscan friars from Ireland set out to establish a day school and junior seminary for aspirants to the order. These friars persevered during a difficult time in our nation’s history as they sought to “rebuild” this space into a special place of learning, faith formation and character development for young men.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Introduces Dynamic Hybrid Learning Program A

lthough the educational landscape has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has viewed this challenge as an opportunity to refine its current best practices and develop new teaching methods. The school’s new flexible learning program allows teachers and students to switch seamlessly from on-site to online without any disruption to the class schedule. Though the future continues to be uncertain, Flintridge Sacred Heart

is well prepared and confident to thrive in any scenario by offering a hybrid learning program for students to learn on campus, off campus, synchronously and asynchronously. Since the end of the 201920 school year, 100% of the school’s faculty has engaged in deeper learning by partnering with OneSchoolhouse to design, build and teach courses that can easily transition to and from on-site and online. In addition, the new school schedule sets aside dedicated time to support the emotional

well-being of each student. Each Wednesday, free of scheduled class time, students will be able to dive more deeply into their own spiritual and personal journeys while developing strong relationships with classmates and mentors. Whether on campus, or learning from a distance, students will be able to participate in Masses, prayer services, retreats, clubs and co-curriculars. As this upcoming school year begins once again from a distance, Flintridge Sacred Heart’s mission of educating young women for a

life of faith, integrity and truth will continue as it lives within the hearts of each talented and dedicated teacher. Regardless of uncertain circumstances, the school will continue to provide an exceptional learning experi-

ence, empowering each student to find her voice and make positive change in the world.

Sequoyah School: A Community of Learners S

equoyah School is a coeducational kindergartenthrough-12th-grade independent day school in Pasadena where students thrive in an inclusive, diverse community supported by a progressive approach to learning. Offering a college preparatory curriculum in a student-centered, experiential environment, Sequoyah is a school where students are appreciated for their individuality of thought, experience and expression. Attending school in a nurturing, supportive learning environment helps students develop self-confidence and a love of learning. Kindergarten through 8th grade at Sequoyah begin with peer groupings in mixed-age classrooms that span two years. Each year, new groupings create

opportunities for second-year students to learn leadership and incoming students to experience the challenge and excitement of working with older children. This creates lasting relationships across grade levels and fosters academic and personal growth in students as they enter their junior high school years in 7th and 8th grades. At the high school, teachers challenge students to see and make connections, communicate ideas, develop meaningful relationships and become change makers who know how to inspire collaboration and lead innovation. As adolescents, Sequoyah high school students develop initiative and self-direction through college preparatory coursework that integrates outdoor education and experiential learning through two

dynamic four-year programs: Field Studies and Social Innovation Program. At Sequoyah, each child is known. The interaction between teacher and student is as important as the subject matter, reflected in a low studentteacher ratio and a developmentally appropriate program that intertwines social and emotional learning with academic progress. Teachers possess the expertise to develop curriculum and apply strategies that foster critical and creative thinking, problem solving, inquiry and application. Highlighting a place-based approach, Sequoyah utilizes the surrounding community as the context for teaching and learning. Education is regarded as the preparation for active citizenship while reinforcing the skills for continued scholarship. On field trips and camping trips at each grade level, students are immersed in local heritage, culture and landscape. An emphasis on social justice and the application of knowledge and skills to contemporary issues extends from kindergarten to high school. Sequoyah welcomes families who wish to play an active, partnering role with the school and whose children will thrive in a collaborative environment. The school is an intentionally diverse community whose classrooms

and economic circumstance. A Sequoyah education challenges the mind, nurtures the heart and celebrates human dignity.

n Monday, Aug. 17, the 2020-21 school year will begin with remote learning for thousands of students in Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre. New beginnings always bring new opportunities — even in a season that’s been exceptionally difficult for our district, families and communities. The next few months will require us to be flexible as we devise new solutions to new problems. We trust that our optimism and collaboration will translate into growth for our students, teachers, staff and families as we navigate the pandemic. Embracing Change, Prioritizing Safety In recent months, no aspect of our lives has remained untouched by COVID-19. That’s not changing any time soon. The pandemic will continue to challenge us. On the flipside, COVID-19 is also forcing us to innovate and imagine new ways to forge meaningful connections, transfer knowledge, address inequities and use technology. As we do so, our first priority is the safety of all those entrusted to us. We can’t have lasting progress without wellness. Our decisions should enable both. With that in mind, our planning has been guided by the expertise of

Brian McDonald

public health officials, including the CDC and public health departments of California, Los Angeles County, the city of Pasadena, state and county officials. Introducing the PUSD Reopening Plan We’re pleased to introduce our plans for 2020–21, made possible by the hard work of our planning team and collaboration with families, labor and community partners. You can access it at pusd.us/reopening, available as a handy PDF or video presentation. You’ll also find updates on that page. A few highlights: All PUSD students will begin the school year via distance

learning on Aug.17. Later in the fall semester, parents will be asked to indicate whether they want their student(s) to remain online only or participate in a hybrid model when inperson instruction is deemed safe. To ensure a smooth, robust learning experience, we are introducing a new distance learning platform, Canvas, and a new video conferencing tool, Webex. Training for teachers is underway. Support for Families Many of us are balancing the shifting demands of work while managing our children’s learning at home — myself included. As the parent of five

Preparing Our Return to School Buildings Though we’re starting with an online-only approach, we’re carefully preparing our return to school buildings. When deemed safe, in-person learning will look different from past experiences. Students and staff will wear face coverings. Staff will be tested for the virus regularly. Every person on campus must follow rigorous health and safety protocols to keep one another safe. If someone tests positive for the virus, we’ll enforce strict regulations to isolate and care for that individual and contain the virus. These adjustments are vital to keep you, your family and peers from harm. Our Sincere Thanks I’m so proud of the diligence our staff has shown and thankful for the feedback and guidance of our families and community partners. It takes all of us to forge a new path forward. We can’t wait to see you again and look forward to what we’ll accomplish together.

CS.” What does that mean to you? In today’s climate, it might mean Please Cover Sneeze. For us, it means a community of families who have prioritized their children’s education and spiritual growth. It means teachers who place a value on curious intellect and inspirational “aha” moments in class and in life. For us, it means Pasadena Christian School, where for the past 75 years, students have been loved,

inspired and equipped to meet life’s challenges and gifts. For you, it can mean your new school home. From preschoolers (age 2) to 8th grade, our students excel because each one is valued as a child of God who has endless possibilities to grow and contribute to our society and God’s kingdom. The preschool will open on Monday, Aug. 24, as an essential service: providing our littlest learners with a safe and fun

environment that nurtures their desire to learn and play. All safety and licensing protocols will be followed, including constant cleaning and sanitizing of the school. The preschool is led by a wonderful and very experienced director, Kohar Jarlekian. She brings more than 27 years of experience to the preschool. The elementary school will open on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with distance learning. Students

will benefit from consistent live instruction and enrichment programs, such as choral music, computer, art, Spanish and PE. The teachers will teach from campus using the latest technology. When the elementary school is allowed to open to in-person learning, students will return to our 9½-acre campus where they will be whole-heartedly welcomed back. Under the leadership of Steven Gray, head of school, and Pauline Tcharkhoutian, principal, you can be assured that not only will the academics be strong, but the students will learn how to apply biblical lessons to everyday life. The campus will be ready with all safety protocols in place, including classroom air purifiers, hospital grade HVAC system and hand sanitizer stations. Frequent hand-washing and health policies will be enforced. Come and discover this beautiful school. Private tours are

Clairbourn School: A Seamless Learning Experience F

or area parents wondering about the quality of education their child will experience this fall due to COVID-19 circumstances, Clairbourn is a refuge from the uncertainty. As a CAIS- and WASCaccredited independent school for preschool through grade 8, Clairbourn has taken extensive steps to ensure a healthy and socially distanced on-campus learning experience as well as a Remote Learning Program for grades K-8. Our spacious, student-ready campus is equipped with new hand-washing stations, disinfecting foggers, new cleaning protocols, and many additional health and safety features.

The school also has the technology, high-speed network, tech-savvy teachers and training needed to conduct a successful remote-learning experience for our students. Not only do Clairbourn teachers have an average of 16 years teaching experience, but they are supported by a team of educational technology experts who empower them to deliver meaningful lessons using appropriate and compelling software and technology tools. Clairbourn’s Remote Learning Program also offers the maximum amount of live teacher time possible under current circumstances and appropriate for each grade level.

that allows them to monitor their child’s progress and track their work. To learn more about Clairbourn School, visit clairbourn.org or call (626) 2863108. There are waitlist-only spots for certain grades from preschool to grade 5, and very limited spaces for grades 6-8. Call admissions for grade-level availability.

A seamless learning experience for students will be provided by giving each one a learning device preloaded with configured software, accompanied by technology training, to use in doing school online or switching to an on-campus experience. Parents can count on having, in both learning formats, an expansive program that includes specialists in music, arts and PE in addition to academic classes, and character education is infused into all of it. Real learning is happening at Clairbourn, and the school goes above and beyond to ensure students have the opportunities they need to

be well-rounded and academically prepared for success in top private high schools. Students are taught to become strong thinkers, communicators and caring human beings, and instruction is differentiated to bring out the best in each student. Parent-care and community is also a big part of the Clairbourn experience. While many events have switched to an online format, parents still enjoy a high level of direct access to school administrators, enjoy office hours for almost all teachers, and have access to a robust learning management system

The Gooden School Embraces Each Student’s Inherent Curiosity A

kindergarten-8th grade independent co-ed day school nestled in the idyllic foothills of Sierra Madre, the Gooden School’s exceptional faculty empowers its students to embrace their curiosity and to think boldly while igniting a passion to lead exemplary lives of kindness, integrity and respect. As the school enters its 45th year of operations, it is committed to reopening for in-person instruction as soon as it is safe to do so. With its small class sizes and ample classroom and outdoor spaces, Gooden is uniquely positioned to embrace the safety protocols necessary to open. “Yeats wrote, ‘Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire,’ and at Gooden that has never been more true than

at this moment,” said Head of School Jo-Anne Woolner. Gooden’s students benefit from a strong connection to

engaging and creative faculty members. This past spring, an innovative and collaborative spirit allowed the school to pivot

quickly to distance learning while still incorporating the school’s motto: respect for self, respect for others, and respect for the world, also known as the 3Rs. Gooden’s faculty arranged not only synchronous classroom learning experiences, but also small learning groups using interactive technology, which provided an in-person connection. Our Lower School teachers made physically distanced home visits to their students and our Middle School faculty continued to provide small-group advisory experiences. Gooden’s experiential learning includes weeklong outdoor education trips as well as day trips. Its STEAM/Makerspace programs and big and little buddy activities continue through distance learning, and complement a rigorous academic program that includes Latin and Spanish, math through geometry, and an aligned and articulated literature and writing program. Gooden also ensures that whether in person or at a distance, all of its students have opportunities to learn and make music, to participate in the visual and performing arts, to engage in public speaking, and to collectively problem-solve around local, national and international issues through its community engage-

ment projects. For example, kindergarten students support the Pasadena Humane Society and 2nd-grade students participate in Jane Goodall’s “Roots and Shoots” program. Middle School student efforts support our sister school in Haiti. Gooden invites you to make an appointment to meet with our admissions team virtually and learn what a Gooden education is all about.

The Waverly Way In and Out of the Classroom S

teve Culp’s twin son and daughter, Joe and Katie, are Waverly School lifers who recently graduated. After growing up in Waverly’s small, engaging classroom settings, the remote learning required by the pandemic was quite a change. He writes of Joe and Katie’s experience: “This spring, with the onset of quarantine, Waverly effortlessly pivoted to online learning. During this time, I gained a new appreciation for Waverly’s administrators and teachers. The ways in which current events worked themselves into discussions on Zoom in their environmental science, history and English classes was impressive and enlightening. I was struck by the quality of teaching, the articulateness of the students and by the dedication of their teachers. I am more thankful than ever that our children spent 13 years at Waverly.”

Stratford School Unveils Its Plan for Fall S

tratford School is excited to welcome students back for the upcoming school year with safety in mind and plans for a flexible learning environment. To date, they have established priorities aligned with the school’s mission and goals for students, created a return-to-campus plan, and are building support systems for several contingency plans. Here’s a preview of our plans for fall: Staying True to Stratford’s Guiding Principles Safety The commitment to the health and safety of the school community is paramount. Stratford will abide by all state and local statutes, heed the advice of health

organizations, notably the CDC, and maintain a clean and healthy environment within the schools. Quality Academic Programs Depending on the final state and local statutes for this school year wherein shelter-in-place or reduced-occupancy mandates are imposed, teachers will be ready to transition to one of several teaching and learning models, among them (1) a period of distance learning or (2) a hybrid of distance and on-campus learning (necessary, for example, if classroom capacity limits are imposed). Commitment to Improvement School year 2020-21 teacher training will focus almost entirely on blended learning techniques — how to develop curriculum and

programing with clear throughlines that seamlessly integrate traditional and modern teaching pedagogies, synchronous and asynchronous learning, in-person and digital experiences. A Caring Atmosphere In all distance-learning interactions with students, the school bridges the digital gap with some playfulness, some fun, and other manifestations of care and connection. In advisory meetings and in academic classes, Stratford has incorporated elements that support social-emotional health. Onward With Optimism! As communities begin to open back up, it is important to be mindful of potential messages around COVID-19 that may be confusing to children. Introducing proactive, age-appropriate discussions about how school might look different when they start the new school year are important topics in which to engage and develop as information evolves. This continued focus around what we do know about the virus and sharing the things that are within our control can help build confidence, and a level of comfort, in our children. As we begin to plan for this upcoming school year, we are still driven by the mission and vision that attracted us to teaching in the first place, and we are reinvigorated by the creativity and inventiveness unleashed in response to

extraordinarily challenging circumstances. We will begin the school year grateful for the opportunity to teach and to learn as we move

onward to an excellent future. To learn more about Stratford School or to schedule a virtual tour, visit stratfordschools.com.

Walden Nurtures Curious and Critical Thinkers J

ohn Dewey, the renowned progressive educator of the early 20th century wrote, “The child’s own instincts and powers furnish the material and give the starting point for all education.” True to this powerful proposition, a Walden education begins with the curiosity of the learner and nurtures the interests, talents and skills of each child. In our pre-K to 6th-grade classrooms, learning is grounded in inquiry, experience and collaboration. We believe successful learning requires a strong academic program balanced with a focus on social-emotional growth and respect for each child’s pace and individual style of learning. Our progressive program brings together a wide spectrum of learners in multi-age classrooms. We value the

in-depth processes that lead to understanding and lay a foundation that encourages students to become both creative and critical thinkers who use their voice as compassionate changemakers in our diverse world. As we embark on the 2020-21 school year, we remain guided by our mission and our commitment to delivering an exceptional and innovative educational experience. Our plans and protocols put the safety and well-being of our community at the heart of everything we do. We are preparing for two educational models: on-campus learning and Walden@ Home remote learning. We recognize the indelible social and emotional benefits that on-campus, in-person programming brings, while we will also be providing distance learning options for families in response to the COVID19 pandemic.
