Flintridge Prep Opens School Year With Optimistic Outlook A
drive-thru Book Day is not what the Flintridge Prep faculty and administration had hoped for, but even before Gov. Newsom announced in July that private and public schools in L.A. County would not open for hybrid learning, plans were underway to make the day special with gifts and surprises for students and their parents in addition to the usual haul of textbooks. Part of the plan includes the presence of Jim Pickett, who will greet families in his first official appearance as head of school.
“The resiliency of our students is truly remarkable. I’ve heard tremendous stories of students supporting each other through the spring and summer,” he said. “I’ve seen the creativity and academic quality of the work students did in the spring and in our online summer school. The instinct to provide mutual support, the tenacity to do the difficult work — these are signs of a healthy, strong community. To say I’m excited for the year ahead is an understatement.” In his opening letter to
families, Pickett reinforced the feeling of optimism, noting that the administration has been preparing equally for three possible schooling options since the spring. “The quality of the planning the administration has done since March is remarkable,” Pickett noted. “So much care has gone into every detail, including a new school schedule that gives order to each day. The schedule will allow faculty time for collaboration, give students downtime, and integrate time for advising and opportunities for each grade to interact. “Our faculty are creative and smart, and they know how to respond to the challenges of teaching online. But most importantly, they have exceptional hearts, so they can see each student as an individual, even when distance poses obstacles,” said Pickett. “The faculty are ready to move to a hybrid model of learning as soon as officials say we can, and we’re all looking forward to a safe return to school.” In the new school year, faculty will be teaching within the recently completed Bachmann Collaboration Building, which houses an art studio, makerspace, science lab, conference spaces and classrooms for students in all grades, and emphasizes collaborative teaching and interdisciplinary learning. Pickett, who joins Prep from Castilleja in Palo Alto, where
he was head of the upper school for eight years, also praised his leadership team, including

Mayfield Senior School: ‘Meeting the Wants of the Age’ M
ayfield Senior School, which recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of its central building, has been nurturing formidable leaders in an all-girls environment for decades. Westridge: Where Girls Are the Future W
estridge is an independent school for girls in grades 4-12 committed to educating intellectually adventurous thinkers, and courageous, compassionate leaders. Flintridge Sacred Heart Introduces Dynamic Hybrid Learning Program A
lthough the educational landscape has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has viewed this challenge as an opportunity to refine its current best practices and develop new teaching methods. The school’s new flexible learning program allows teachers and students to switch seamlessly from on-site to online without any disruption to the class schedule. Though the future continues to be uncertain, Flintridge Sacred Heart
is well prepared and confident to thrive in any scenario by offering a hybrid learning program for students to learn on campus, off campus, synchronously and asynchronously. Since the end of the 201920 school year, 100% of the school’s faculty has engaged in deeper learning by partnering with OneSchoolhouse to design, build and teach courses that can easily transition to and from on-site and online. In addition, the new school schedule sets aside dedicated time to support the emotional
well-being of each student. Each Wednesday, free of scheduled class time, students will be able to dive more deeply into their own spiritual and personal journeys while developing strong relationships with classmates and mentors. n Monday, Aug. 17, the 2020-21 school year will begin with remote learning for thousands of students in Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre. New beginnings always bring new opportunities — even in a season that’s been exceptionally difficult for our district, families and communities. The next few months will require us to be flexible as we devise new solutions to new problems. We trust that our optimism and collaboration will translate into growth for our students, teachers, staff and families as we navigate the pandemic. Embracing Change, Prioritizing Safety In recent months, no aspect of our lives has remained untouched by COVID-19. That’s not changing any time soon. The pandemic will continue to challenge us. On the flipside, COVID-19 is also forcing us to innovate and imagine new ways to forge meaningful connections, transfer knowledge, address inequities and use technology. As we do so, our first priority is the safety of all those entrusted to us. We can’t have lasting progress without wellness. Our decisions should enable both. Preparing Our Return to School Buildings Though we’re starting with an online-only approach, we’re carefully preparing our return to school buildings. When deemed safe, in-person learning will look different from past experiences. Students and staff will wear face coverings. Staff will be tested for the virus regularly. Every person on campus must follow rigorous health and safety protocols to keep one another safe. If someone tests positive for the virus, we’ll enforce strict regulations to isolate and care for that individual and contain the virus. These adjustments are vital to keep you, your family and peers from harm. The Gooden School Embraces Each Student’s Inherent Curiosity A

quickly to distance learning while still incorporating the school’s motto: respect for self, respect for others, and respect for the world, also known as the 3Rs. Gooden’s faculty arranged not only synchronous classroom learning experiences, but also small learning groups using interactive technology, which provided an in-person connection. Our Lower School teachers made physically distanced home visits to their students and our Middle School faculty continued to provide small-group advisory experiences. Gooden’s experiential learning includes weeklong outdoor education trips as well as day trips. Its STEAM/Makerspace programs and big and little buddy activities continue through distance learning, and complement a rigorous academic program that includes Latin and Spanish, math through geometry, and an aligned and articulated literature and writing program. Gooden also ensures that whether in person or at a distance, all of its students have opportunities to learn and make music, to participate in the visual and performing arts, to engage in public speaking, and to collectively problem-solve around local, national and international issues through its community engage-
ment projects. For example, kindergarten students support the Pasadena Humane Society and 2nd-grade students participate in Jane Goodall’s “Roots and Shoots” program. Stratford School Unveils Its Plan for Fall S
tratford School is excited to welcome students back for the upcoming school year with safety in mind and plans for a flexible learning environment. To date, they have established priorities aligned with the school’s mission and goals for students, created a return-to-campus plan, and are building support systems for several contingency plans. Here’s a preview of our plans for fall: Staying True to Stratford’s Guiding Principles Safety The commitment to the health and safety of the school community is paramount. Stratford will abide by all state and local statutes, heed the advice of health
organizations, notably the CDC, and maintain a clean and healthy environment within the schools. Quality Academic Programs Depending on the final state and local statutes for this school year wherein shelter-in-place or reduced-occupancy mandates are imposed, teachers will be ready to transition to one of several teaching and learning models, among them (1) a period of distance learning or (2) a hybrid of distance and on-campus learning (necessary, for example, if classroom capacity limits are imposed). Commitment to Improvement School year 2020-21 teacher training will focus almost entirely on blended learning techniques — how to develop curriculum and
programing with clear throughlines that seamlessly integrate traditional and modern teaching pedagogies, synchronous and asynchronous learning, in-person and digital experiences. A Caring Atmosphere In all distance-learning interactions with students, the school bridges the digital gap with some playfulness, some fun, and other manifestations of care and connection. In advisory meetings and in academic classes, Stratford has incorporated elements that support social-emotional health. Onward With Optimism! As communities begin to open back up, it is important to be mindful of potential messages around COVID-19 that may be confusing to children.
