SMHS Football Boosters Will Kick Off 66th Season After the New Year By Greg Cribbs President San Marino High School Football Booster Club
W
ith the end of summer approaching and fall right around the corner, we are all usually looking forward to cooler weather, the turning of the leaves and high school football. Unfortunately, this year has already been, and continues to be, very challenging for Titan Football players, coaches, parents and friends. We were scheduled to begin the 66th season for SMHS football and the second season for coach Justin Mesa. Last season,
coach Mesa led the Titans through an extremely challenging and difficult schedule to a second-place league finish and CIF playoff berth. Thus far, this season has also been extremely challenging but for very Greg Cribbs different reasons. COVID-19 has forced the entire Titan family of students, teachers and staff off campus since mid-March. However, COVID-19 has not affected coach Mesa’s enthusiasm and leadership for our football
program. Throughout it all, coach Mesa has put together and executed an effective plan for the coaches and players via remote meetings and workouts in order to have our proud Titan program ready for our opponents and rivals when the time comes. Thank you to all of those who have already given time and resources to support our SMHS Titan Football team. However, the challenges continue. Carver Elementary Adapts, Innovates By Michael Lin Principal Carver Elementary School

he faculty and staff of Carver Elementary School are excited to welcome students to the 2020-21 school year. Our team of teachers and staff worked tirelessly throughout this summer to adapt to a new normal. Carver teachers are innovating and applying new instructional strategies to reaching all students over distance learning. Teachers will be using a new tool, the Schoology Learning Management System, which will allow gradelevel teams to collaborate on instructional creation, delivery and assessments. Having one platform makes it possible to share Michael Lin and access resources and content among a grade-level team as well as between the two elementary schools, enabling a transformative level of collaboration among our educators. Teachers will be able to differentiate
instruction and provide personalized learning following a clear vision of instructional design that meets content standards and streamlines data collection and analysis. ue to Covid-19, new semester arrangements for the San Marino Chinese School will be the same as our summer school: online learning. Our classes started Wednesday for our after-school program. The after-school program offers three-day or five-day options, as well as Friday extracurricular classes such as music, art, dance and computer coding. Weekend classes will start on Saturday, Aug 22. Classes include: beginner’s Chinese, high school credit class and AP Chinese. Currently, there are a total of 200 stu-

Flintridge Prep Opens School Year With Optimistic Outlook
A
drive-thru Book Day is not what the Flintridge Prep faculty and administration had hoped for, but even before Gov. Newsom announced in July that private and public schools in L.A. County would not open for hybrid learning, plans were underway to make the day special with gifts and surprises for students and their parents in addition to the usual haul of textbooks. Part of the plan includes the presence of Jim Pickett, who will greet families in his first official appearance as head of school. “The resiliency of our students is truly remarkable. I’ve heard tremendous stories of students supporting each other through the spring and summer,” he said. In his opening letter to families, Pickett reinforced the feeling of optimism, noting that the administration has been preparing equally for three possible schooling options since the spring. “The faculty are ready to move to a hybrid model of learning as soon as officials say we can, and we’re all looking forward
to a safe return to school.” Faculty will be teaching within the recently completed Bachmann Collaboration Building, which houses an art studio, makerspace, science lab, conference spaces and classrooms, and emphasizes collaborative teaching and interdisciplinary learning.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Introduces Hybrid Learning
A
lthough the educational landscape has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has viewed this challenge as an opportunity to refine its current best practices and develop new teaching methods. The school’s new flexible learning program allows teachers and students to switch seamlessly from on-site to online without any disruption to the class schedule. Though the future continues to be uncertain, Flintridge Sacred Heart is well prepared and confident to thrive in any scenario by offering a hybrid learning program for students to learn on campus, off campus, synchronously and asynchronously. Since the end of the 2019-20 school year, 100% of the school’s faculty has engaged in deeper learning by partnering with OneSchoolhouse to design, build and teach courses that can easily transition to and from on-site and online. Deeper Learning at Sequoyah School
he most truly interesting problems in the world are not confined to one subject area,” says Sequoyah School’s Director of Curriculum Emily Singer. In describing how Sequoyah has always emphasized an interdisciplinary approach to learning, Singer noted that teachers often engage students in project-based learning to tease out the multifaceted issues that must be considered. She also pointed out that asking students to apply knowledge and concepts to real-world issues motivates deeper learning and hones skills. Students not only gather information and test their ideas, but they make mistakes and regroup to try again. These are key skills in developing persistence and resilience. Sequoyah’s High School Director Marc Alongi explained: “Thinking about one’s own thinking improves and reinforces learning. There are a variety of ways to approach this type of practice.” In the K-8 program, students prepare portfolios, collecting meaningful examples of their work to present to their classmates. When asked about an interdisciplinary
approach, he explained high school faculty want students to ask themselves, “What specific ideas did they find most fascinating? Why? How did that expand their curiosity? Did they act upon that curiosity and in what way? What new intellectual connections have they made and where will their learning go from here?” They answer those questions in a formal process at key points during the school year. a Cañada’s acclaimed Parent Education classes return this fall beginning Sept. 15-18, welcoming anyone with children ages infant-18 to join the ideal class to support you on your parenting journey. Parent Education’s 2020-21 program offers 16 classes with age-specific topics designed to guide parents from newborns to high school. Through lecture and group discussion, Parent Ed’s experienced instructors leave parents feeling supported and more equipped to meet the challenges of parenting. Parents of newborns-age 5 attend parent-and-child classes together where they form lasting friendships.
