Helen A. Cox

orn and raised in Honolulu, Helen Cox is a 5th generation Hawai‘i resident. Growing up, she spent summers on the island of Kaua‘i where her father grew up and her grandparents lived. After graduating from high school, Cox left the islands for the mainland where she lived for over 30 years before returning home to Kaua‘i to serve as Chancellor of Kaua‘i Community College (KCC) beginning in August 2008. During her time away she received a B.A. from Harvard University and an M.A. and PhD in American Studies from the University of Utah. Dr. Cox has served in higher education for over 25 years, first as a faculty member and then as an adminis-

trator, moving from Division Chair to Executive Assistant to the President to Associate Vice President prior to assuming the Chancellor position. She is also the founder and was Executive Director of Human Pursuits, a non-profit corporation funded in part through National Endowment for the Humanities grants to develop and implement reading and discussion programs for out-of-school adults in libraries, senior centers, prisons and other settings in the Rocky Mountain West. Cox has had the good fortune to work internationally in China, India, and Japan, and served as a Fulbright Scholar in both Czechoslovakia and Russia. Cox’s leadership at KCC focuses on the College’s roles to support the commu-

nity through education and training, to serve as an intellectual and cultural gathering place, and to provide leadership in moving the island towards an economically, environmentally and socially more sustainable future. Both the Wai‘al‘ale Project and the Kaua‘i Community Market were begun under her leadership. Cox is married to John Latkiewicz, the Director of the Small Business Development Center on Kaua‘i, and has two grown sons, both in graduate school on the mainland. She loves being back on Kaua‘i, where she can pursue not only a rich profession in a community for which she had great aloha, but can also hike, swim, paddle, write poetry and maintain a garden.

4-H GROWS HERE

4-H Livestock Tent Schedule 4-H Cloverbud 4-H Cloverbud youth will also have their rabbit and chicken projects on display for you to see as well. Cloverbuds are 4-H members, ages 5 to 8, who engage in non-competitive projects during the year. Come support our younger members as they practice their knowledge and speaking skills with their rabbits and chickens.

By Laura Kawamura

C

ome and find the 4-Hers at the fair! You’ll find them wearing the traditional 4-H logo – a green four-leaf clover with white “H” on each leaf representing Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Sponsored by the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension, 4-H members are the youngest bunch of “students” from Hawaii’s land-grant university! This past December, Laura Kawamura retired after many years of diligent service to Cooperative Extension, 4-H, and the Kauai community. This month we hired Hallie Cristobal, the most recent member to the CTAHR ohana on Kauai, who will work with youth and intergenerational programs, including 4-H. Please be sure to welcome her when you visit the 4-H Livestock Tent. As always, youth and adult volunteers will operate the 4-H Petting Zoo during limited hours each day under the 4-H Livestock Tent, located next to the county baseball field. Bring a child to share the experience of petting a tame chicken or duck or hanging out with a cute piglet. Take advantage of a teachable moment to develop an appreciation for animals and agriculture. Cost to enter is $2.00 a person. All proceeds of the zoo will benefit the Kauai 4-H Federation, a not-for-profit organization that provides educational and leadership opportunities for youth on Kauai. During the year, the 4-H Federation provides opportunities for youth to lead, learn and grow through workshops, leadership trainings, and service learning projects. With the help of adults, youth plan and implement these activities while developing valuable life skills. 4 • Sunday, August 11, 2019

Join 4H Come and learn about the many things 4-H has to offer. There is something for everyone and you’ll discover that it’s much more than raising livestock! Sign up as a 4-H volunteer and experience the rewarding feeling of helping others! For more information on 4-H, come and talk to us at the fair or call the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Office at 274-3471.

Petting Zoo The 4-H Petting Zoo will take place from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. For your health and safety, we will have hand washing stations, but remember that no food, beverages, baby bottles and sipper cups should be brought to areas where animals are present. Chicks for Sale Want to harvest your own fresh eggs? We’ll have Cinnamon Queen chicks (a Rhode Island derivative) that can lay 320 eggs a year. Limited quantities will be sold for $5.00 each on a first come, first served basis on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 9:15 p.m. All remaining chicks on display will be sold on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. You must bring your own container to purchase these egg layers.

Mechanical Cow Have you ever milked a cow? If you want to try your hand at milking and learn more about the US and Hawaii dairy industry, come see Beatrice, our mechanical dairy cow. Beatrice represents a Holstein dairy cow who is lactating (or producing milk). Beatrice will be milked in the Livestock area on Friday through Sunday. Livestock shows and auction Get a taste of the livestock industry and check out our 4-H market projects located in the Agriculture and Livestock area. 4-H’ers spend months feeding and caring for their livestock market projects and bring them to the county farm fair. See them work with their project animals prior to the shows and auction. See calendar for schedule. If you’re interested in supported 4-H and local food production, register as a buyer at the 4-H tent.

A

loha! Welcome to the 2019 Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair! Every year, our community looks forward to this joyous event that brings together our families and friends for food, fun, and good farming. There is really something for everyone at the Farm Fair – including livestock and produce shows, comedy and live music, vendor booths with ‘ono food and local products, and of course carnival rides and games. Since this annual event began, many of our keiki and families have created long-lasting memories. This four-day festival is truly part of our community, and our lives. I am so grateful to the many organizations and individuals for their time and dedication to bring this fair to Kaua‘i year after year. I would like to extend a warm Aloha and Mahalo to the members of the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau

and the many community stakeholders and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the continued success of the fair! In addition, I would like to thank our residents and visitors for supporting this event that supports our farmers, ranchers and local businesses as well as non-profit community organizations. By coming together for the Farm Fair, we are contributing, supporting, and continuing agriculture on Kaua‘i and enhancing our local economy. Mahalo to you all, for being an integral part of this important effort. I wish you all a wonderful time at the 2019 Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair! With warmest aloha,

Derek S. K. Kawakami Mayor, County of Kaua‘i
