The Contractors Association of Kauai History The Contractors Association of Kauai was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kauai. The leader of this organizational effort was Tetsuro “Rosy” Maeda, who was president of Kauai Builders at that time. Mr. Maeda was also the Association’s first President. Today, the association presents its annual service award for Member of the Year in memory of Mr. Maeda, who passed away in 1976. Several weeks before Hurricane ‘Iniki devastated Kauai in 1992, the Association became affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders. NAHB staff engineers

worked with county and state officials in assessing structural damages and assisted in the facilitation of trainings for contractors, engineers, architects and consultants in the aftermath of ‘Iniki. Several months after the hurricane, the Association worked in partnership with the Building Industry Association of Hawaii and numerous other construction trade organizations to provide Kauai residents and commercial building owners with a Rebuilding Expo on the grounds of Kauai Community College. The purpose was to provide information and education on building and rebuilding materials, products and services available in the marketplace. That humble show under tents blossomed into the Home

Show that is now in its 22nd year. The show continues to be a source of information and education for homeowners and potential home owners on products, services and materials available in a wide range of manufacturers and prices. First Hawaiian Bank has been the Home Show’s only corporate sponsor for the last 22 years. Three years ago, The Hunt Companies supported the home show through a cooperating sponsorship. Mahalo First Hawaiian Bank and Hunt Companies for your support of CAK and the Kauai community! Today, the hundred member association is the organized voice of the licensed contracting industry, working in partnership with county and

state officials and agencies in an advocacy role to address industry issues and concerns. The association is also mindful that it needs to work toward equity so issues like building codes would not price working families out of home ownership. Through the efforts of the association, Kauai’s construction professionals

The Association provides a wide range of safety, health and environmental trainings and workshops for general industry (non-constructors) as well as construction professionals.
