We dedicate this year’s Farm Fair to
Michael Roy Strong
Michael Roy Strong, formerly of Kilauea, Kauai passed away in October 2016. Mike was 69 years young. He lived most of his adult life on Kauai but was born in Brooklyn, NY. Earning a degree in Soil Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA, he came to Kauai with innovative ideas for enhancing Hawaii’s agriculture. Decades BEFORE the “farm to fork movement, he was producing beautiful locally grown produce. He was instrumental in improving the Hawaii Papaya industry. Credited with planting some of the first exotic fruits like Mangosteen and Rambutan and low acid white pineapple. He traveled to Southeast Asia and Australia seeking out these exotic fruits and obtaining planting material to bring back to Hawaii. Mike worked tirelessly with his fellow farmers to advance the way local farmers grow their crops. He loved sharing his knowledge with other farmers. He also served his community by volunteering on the Board of the Kauai Department of Water. He was a proud member of Hawaii Farm Bureau and was active with the Kauai County Farm Bureau. Mike cherished his children and admired his sons. He is survived by sons Eric Michael of Kilauea, Kauai; Dylan Carl of Moloaa, Kauai and Austin Kalani of Berkeley, CA and former wife, Candance Strong.

Please join us in the entertainment tent on Thursday, August 24 at 6:00 p.m.; center stage to remember Mike Strong as we dedicate this year’s farm fair to him and recognize the legacy he has left. We will have Reverend Caroline Miura bless this year’s farm fair. Enjoy the Kapaa Middle School Youth Choir and Ukulele band.
Aloha! Welcome to the 2017 Kaua`i County Farm Bureau Fair! We all look forward to this annual event as it brings us together in the spirit of `ohana, food, fun and farming. From the livestock and produce shows to the many booths and of course the carnival rides, there is something for everyone at the Farm Fair. Many organizations collaborate to bring us this wonderful event, and I would like to extend a big mahalo to the members of the Kaua`i County Farm Bureau and the many community stakeholders and volunteers who work tirelessly each year to ensure the continued success of the fair! In addition, I would like to thank our residents and visitors for supporting this event, which in turn, supports our farmers, ranchers and local businesses as well as nonprofit community organizations. By coming together for the Farm Fair, we are contributing, supporting and continuing agriculture on Kaua`i and enhancing our local economy. Aloha Pumehana, Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr. Mayor, County of Kaua‘i August 24-27, 2017

T
he Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair is proud to welcome back Saturday nights headliner Willie K. Grammy nominee and winner of multiple prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano awards Willie k can play anything from acoustic Hawaiian music to jazz, reggae, rock, country and even opera. Willie K also plays the blues with his latest album Warehouse Blues, the long awaited album that returns him to his roots and he says playing the blues makes him happy. For Willie K—born Willie Kahaialii and known affectionately as Uncle Willie in the islands—playing the blues marks the completion of a full circle. Although he has built a reputation as one of the foremost practitioners of native Hawaiian music over the years, it was the blues that Willie first learned from his dad, himself a highly respected musician. “My father was a great influence,” says Willie K. “He groomed me to be where I am today. He was just as diverse as I am—the guy knew how to play everything: jazz, blues and Hawaiian.
