We dedicate this year’s Farm Fair to

Matthew Henry Stevenson Matthew Henry Stevenson, of Wailua, Kauai, passed away unexpectedly at home on May 22, 2016. He was 37 years young. A cherished and admired father, friend, brother and son, Matt was born in Washington, D.C. to William (Bill) Stevenson of Greenville, South Carolina, and Mildred Teruya of Waikapu, Maui. Matt loved the birds, lizards, grasses, oaks and cattle that populated the watersheds and hills around his home. He spent summers on Maui with his grandparents, Walter and Joyce Teruya, These early experiences in nature put Matt on a path to the career he loved as a range scientist, and a life he loved in Hawaii, but as a citizen of the world. Matt attended BYU in Provo, Utah for one year before serving an LDS mission in Tokyo Japan. He loved the Japanese language and culture. Matt loved Aikido. His practice of this martial art trained his body and guided his mind, and he excelled to the rank of 2nd Dan under sensei Wesley Shimokawa of Lihue Aiki Kai. Matt graduated from BYU in Wildlife and Range Resources, minoring in Japanese and graduating with honors (2003). Matt was a scientist with a poet’s heart. In 2003 he married Rebecca Anne Davis in Manti, SEE STEVENSON, PAGE 19

Celebration

Thursday, August 25, 2016

Please join us at 6 p.m. in the Entertainment Tent, Center Stage to celebrate and remember Matt Stevenson, as we dedicate this year’s Farm Fair to him. We will have Youth Pastor, Lyle Ueunten from The Church At Koloa bless our 2016 Fair. Enjoy the music of the Kapaa Middle School Youth Choir and Ukulele Band.

Aloha! Welcome to the 2016 Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair! We all look forward to this annual event as it brings us together in the spirit of family, food, fun and farming. From the livestock show, to the fruit and vegetable show and of course the carnival rides, there is something for everyone at the Farm Fair! Many organizations collaborate to bring us this wonderful event, and I would like to extend a big mahalo to the members of the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau and the many community partners and volunteers that work tirelessly each year to ensure the continued success of the fair! In addition, I would like to thank our residents and visitors for supporting this multi-faceted event, which in turn, supports our farmers, ranchers and local businesses as well as nonprofit community organizations. By coming together for the Farm Fair, we are contributing toward the future of agriculture on Kaua‘i, and helping to enhance our local economy. Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr. Mayor, County of Kaua‘i August 25-28, 2016

Each nonprofit food vendor has made a commitment to use compostable foodware, investing to help support the reduction of waste at the fair. This adds to other green efforts at the fair, such as CFL lighting, oil recycling and the use of HI-5 containers. To support our commitment to zero waste, please separate waste in the food
