ome and join us for the 20th ANNUAL GARDEN FAIR, Saturday, April 18, 2015 - 9:30am3:00pm at the Kauai Community College front lawn. Hosted by the Kauai County Farm Bureau and the University of Hawai’i College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources (CTAHR), the annual Kauai Garden Fair is one of the largest gatherings of green thumbs on Kauai, and a great way to share the bounty of the island firsthand. The Fair will be buzzing with gardeners, suppliers, garden lovers and consumers there to shop for a wide variety of plants, landscape products and equipment, and to find out the latest gardening information and tips. A wide variety of tropical plants, flowers, produce and seeds will be available for

purchase representing farmers, nurseries and organizations from around the island. The theme of this year’s Garden Fair is Edible Ornamentals. Guest speaker Dr. Andrew Kaufman of the UHCTAHR, Dept. of Tropical Plant and Soil Science will discuss ideas to enhance your home edible landscape. Following him on the stage will be other CTAHR speakers and partners including: Ted Radovich (speaking on organic gardening), Matt Stevenson (discussing free range chicken and egg production), Rachel Smith (on invasive species), and Richard Ebesu (on insect and disease problems in the home garden). Each year at the spring Garden Fair we provide a preview of the theme for the summer Farm Fair, also hosted by the Kauai County Farm Bureau. This summer’s

2015 Annual Fruit and Vegetable Show will have a special prize category for the best Edible-pod beans (i.e., green beans). Did you know that “green beans” aren’t always green? Edible-pod beans actually come in a wide variety of colors. There are yellow beans, purple beans, even speckled beans. Along with diversity in color, beans also come in a variety of shapes, textures, and flavors. Some beans grow as vines and will climb a fence or trellis; others are grown as small bushes. At this year’s Garden Fair CTAHR’s volunteer Master Gardeners will be giving away free samples of seeds for you to plant and tend and harvest in your home garden. We have some special varieties to choose from, including Hawaiian Wonder, Romano Purpiate, Capitano,

and even Red Noodle beans. Try your hand at growing edible-pod beans at home, and enter your best produce

to win prizes at the summer Farm Fair. You may also want to savor the taste of your successful bean pro-

duction with one of the recipes below. See you at the Garden Fair!
