Greenstone Project male vocalist John Rivera, guitarist Brion James and bass guitarist Pali Carbonel finish up their performance during an Aug. 17 music video shoot at the Kauai Community College’s Performing Arts Center.
K
auai vocalist John Rivera has been involved in the local music scene for most of his life and made a number of transitions over the years to continue living out his dream. Most recently Rivera began a new chapter by branching off from island music band, Aloha Breeze, and creating a new one called The Greenstone Project. The five-piece band features Rivera and four other main players: drummer Ariki Foster, bass player Pali Carbonel, guitarist Jerry Jona and keyboard player Bart Skrbec. “We want to move forward and we want to get bigger and grow our sound and we want to work bigger gigs, Rivera said. “We’re not mainstream yet but maybe doing work in the corporate area will help us move down that stream a little bit. To help kickstart that effort, the group, along with five new members, including UnderRated Band female vocalist Mary de Thouars and awardwinning guitarist Brion James, filmed their first music video on Aug. 17 at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. The 7-minute production, spearheaded by

Stephen Watkins of Omnireel Cinema, features songs that spanned several decades of music styles beginning in early- to mid-1970s. “The medley the band has put together shows a wide range of musical styles to meet the needs of a wide range of audiences in a corporate environment,Watkins said. “That’s really great to have a band that has that wide of a scope. Rivera said one of the band’s unique characteristics lies in the idea of keeping everything local. The band’s first music video, shot on the stage of the performing arts center, even featured local dancers and production crew members Kent Tanigawa, Leo DuBois and Edwin Sawyer. “When you have a band that’s trying to make it go anywhere, there’s so many people feeding the band, Rivera said. “We have to work on the music but that’s only one dimension — that’s one note in the whole song. To view the music video, visit the Greenstone Project Entertainment YouTube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGo8kSOYja02DhiR6UmCP8A. ucked away in the Safeway Shopping Center between the USPS Store and YES Skate Shop, the Pau Hana Bar and Grill may be one of the most satisfying dining experiences around.
Tony Torres, a third-generation Kauai resident, born and raised, and his chef, Leland Lam-Yuen, have taken a standard menu and given it exceptional quality at an affordable price. But, as with any great
restaurant, the open and welcoming atmosphere is a large part of what brings people back again and again. “My number one seller is fish and chips, Torres said. “We catch our own and we

t takes imagination to create a tropical drink that qualifies for the liquor more than it does through decoration. Pau Hana Bar and Grill came up with the “Kauai Stubby, a potent but tasty drink with vodka, peach schnapps, mango and orange juice. They serve it in a plain rocks glass to stay true to its modesty. “One of our customers came up with it and so we put it on our menu, said Pau Hana owner Tony Torres. It’s a favorite in the little bar that seems to have what everyone wants. It’s a local bar with simple beers for the old-timers, but also carries 35 different varieties to ensure that the more particular of patrons feel at home. You wouldn’t think that a

He said the three cans of beer batter give the light-breaded coating a golden brown and doesn’t overpower the mahi mahi underneath. It is served with tarter sauce and malt vinegar. “Most people say the batter is not too thick, Lam-Yuen said. “It’s also a more meaty fish than you might find at some places that have a thick batter and all you taste is just the dough sometimes. At $11.95 the three generous size pieces and waffle fries were more than enough for lunch even after skipping breakfast. Add more for just $3.95 a piece if you have the appetite. If you don’t want your fish fried, try the charbroiled Fresh Catch Sandwich that comes with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle on a sesame seed bun. The Fresh Fish Tacos are served in a corn tortilla with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and
a tropical fruit salsa with fries on the side. Ask for the Cajun seasoning if you want them served spicy hot. Bars are known for deepfried cooking but Pau Hana is a restaurant complete with a Super Caesar or Tossed Greens salads with several toppings and a chicken, fresh catch or steak option. The lightly grilled garlic fish or chicken wraps come with salad, cheese. The Super Caesar with Steak is the most recent addition. It comes with a choice of 8 oz steak or fresh Ahi. Other entrees include the Island Style Stir Fry with chicken, fish or steak. The Beefeater’s Choice is an 11 oz striploin steak. The menu ranges from $11.95 for most items on up to $32.95 for a full rack of barbecue ribs. Most items are on the lower end of the scale and the servings are generous. The charbroiled ribs are cooked with a secret sauce. The Fresh Island Fish is also charbroiled and prepared
in a wine sauce. At $6.95 the Apple Lumpia dessert is itself worth the trip to Pau Hana. The real apple filling served inside of a Lumpia wrap is served in eight deep fried pieces, with powdered sugar, cinnamon, whip cream and a cherry on top. Try a little of everything with pu pu platters that include Fresh Fish Samplers, Steak Pu Pu and Sashimi. Torres said the restaurant has a lot of “Ono ratings in the travel guides and visitor comments online have only helped his reputation. LamYuen started working at Pau Hana when he was just a freshman at Kauai Community College and in May he graduated from the KCC School of Culinary Arts. “He went to school and came here for some on-thejob training, Torres said. This little plaza restaurant is as cozy and friendly as any place on the island.
the games but the bar is about conversation and music. “We have the only jukebox on the island, Torres said. The Wurlitzer jukebox is a big draw and Torres said it’s the only one still operating in a Kauai bar. He bought it in Germany in 2000 and it’s filled with CDs from patrons and provides a good blend of Hawaiian and country music.

f all the movie villains we’ve met lately, few are stranger than Delacourt, Jodie Foster’s evil, white-blonde, powersuited and power-hungry defense official in “Elysium, the much-awaited but ultimately somewhat disappointing new film from director Neill Blomkamp. From her command post on a ritzy space station high up above 22nd-century Earth, a demitasse of espresso at her side, Delacourt doles out orders in a foreign but unrecognizable accent. “Send them to deportation! she barks, when “undocumented ships breach her borders. “Get them off this habitat! Blomkamp, whose sci-fi parable “District 9 came out of nowhere four years ago to earn a best-picture Oscar nod, is crystal clear in his intentions here. He’s making obvious statements about immigration and universal health care, and whether the frequent references bother you or not will greatly influence how much you enjoy the film. One thing you can’t deny, though, is its visual beauty, and, as in “District 9, his masterful use of special effects. It’s not for nothing that Blomkamp, at the tender age of 33, has been called a visionary artist of the genre. His “Elysium — that space station in the sky, looking a lot like present-day Easthampton — is an enormous wheel, on the rim of which its wealthy residents, having left the teeming and polluted Earth, inhabit pristine white homes with bright green manicured lawns. Brilliant sunlight dapples the blue waters of their swimming pools. Classical music and clinking glasses echo in the background. For some reason, people seem to speak French. Most importantly, Elysium’s inhabitants are
eternally healthy, because each home holds a “healing bay, which looks like a tanning machine, except it cures all illness. Down on Earth, things are different. Los Angeles in 2154 is grimy, gritty and poor, with minimal medical care. Children look longingly to the sky, dreaming of Elysium. In a flashback, Max, a young boy in an orphanage, promises a young girl named Frey that one day, they’ll go there together. Frey grows up to be a nurse; Max, a car thief. But Max — portrayed by an earnest, committed and perhaps overly grim Matt Damon — has reformed himself when, one day, at the hands of a heartless boss, he’s exposed to a lethal dose of radiation in the factory where he works. Within five days, he will die. To get to Elysium and save his life, Max makes a deal with an underground revolutionary (Wagner Moura) who runs a fleet of illegal shuttles. All Max needs to do is kidnap the evil billionaire who runs the factory (a creepy William Fichtner) and, oh yes, export data from his brain. He gets the data, but up in the sky, Delacourt, desperate for the information now in Max’s brain, has activated an agent on the ground. Suddenly Max is being hunted by the vicious Kruger, a character so over-the-top, he takes over the film. It’s fun to watch the manic Sharlto Copley, who played the hunted man in “District 9, now play the hunter. “ Eventually, Max will make it to Elysium, and so will the beautiful Frey (Alice Braga), with the critically ill daughter she’s desperate to save. There, despite the always-smart and crafted action scenes, the movie lets us down a bit with a reliance on action-hero formula and some pretty lame dialogue.

ast month, the Kauai Junior Lifeguard program snagged its 10th consecutive state title, before heading to the national competition in Manhattan Beach, Calif. There, the squad claimed 17 medals, including seven gold — “an unprecedented achievement given this was the first time ever a team from Hawaii participated at such high levels, said Serge Marcil, creative producer at 4Dventures. “We are so proud of our Kauai Junior Lifeguard program for competing — and doing well — at both the state and national level, Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said. “Participants train hard throughout the summer, and it’s great to see their dedication pay off.
On Saturday, 4Dventures, in association with the County of Kauai and the Kauai Lifeguard Association, will throw an open-to-the-public party at the War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue. “First and foremost, it’s a celebration of their 10th consecutive title, said Marcil, who, along with his wife Jennifer, is producing “Saving Lives, a reality TV show about KJL. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with food and refreshments for the lifeguards and their families. The general public is invited to join the celebration at 6 p.m. Space is limited. Marcil said the commitment, dedication and success of the junior lifeguards deserves recognition. “This is our way to thank not only the kids involved with
the Junior Lifeguard program, but also the members of our community who have been supportive of our television project from the very beginning, he wrote in a release for the event. As part of the event, the Marcils will screen the 30minute teaser of “Saving Lives, which was shot over spring break with a handful of junior squad members, as well as a new video that showcases the journey which led the KJL team to California. “This is also an opportunity for us to reach out to all Kauai residents and invite them to partake in this unique project and program, Marcil said. Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau, said she is familiar with Marcil’s background as a filmmaker,
