NO DOUBT ABOUT WHO’S THE BOSS AT THE BOOKSTORE ••• BOOK REVIEW
CELESTE THE CAT BOSS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
H
umans, pay attention. This is “Celeste the Cat Boss” of Instagram fame writing this week’s book review. And for good reason. Of all the books that are
reviewed here, there is only really one that matters: the one that I wrote! Well… I didn’t “write” the book, but I dictated to my servants what needed to be in it, like any good boss should. Of course I did. Let the humans do the labor. I’ve got better things to do, like sleep. Who cares about all those New York Times “bestsellers,” Pulitzer prize-winners, ManBooger whatevers? My book’s
far superior to them all. It’s my masterwork. In fact, it is my life’s work! All 17 years of it! (And I’m still looking as gorgeous as ever — secret: it’s all that beauty rest.) “I Don’t Acknowledge You: The Zen of Mochi-Celeste”
is a masterpiece that will transcend all time. Every human who is lucky enough to be the servant of a cat will recognize the truisms contained within its pages. To make it easy for you humans to understand, I distilled my enormous wisdom into short, Zen-like koans, such as: w “I am THE BOSS;” w “You exist to FEED ME;” w “Cleaning my cat box is YOUR PRIVILEGE.” Each of my enlightened sayings also feature my iconic, mochi-style version of yours

omedy Central and Netflix comedian Ari Shaffir will be performing at Kauai Community College’s Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The New York comedian has never been to Kauai. He is looking forward to hiking, driving the speed limit and eating what the locals eat. Through the grapevine, he heard and learned of the term “haole,” and promises he will do his best not to earn that title. “I’m excited to meet the people and make them laugh, help them escape their daily troubles. I am also excited to escape the cold New York weather myself. It is too cold. If you want to visit New York, you should come in April. It’s not cold then,” Shaffir said.
His father and grandmother were Holocaust survivors. He was born and raised in New York before they moved to different states. Shaffir decided to become a comedian after college and made that typical move to Los Angeles, where he learned the art of comedy. “I had two choices: One, work a 9-to-5 job. Two, do this for me and become a stand-up comedian,” he said. He has been doing standup for 20 years. He loves connecting with audiences and making them forget their worries. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are$35.50 and $39.50, available at Eventbrite.com. ••• Stephanie Shinno, staff writer, can be reached at 245-0424 or sshinno@ thegardenisland.com.
truly set in my classic pose. You have no idea how generous I am being, taking my time away from sleeping to share “I Don’t Acknowledge You” with the world. It is already a bestseller in my servants’ bookstore, and I don’t even try. I just lay there in my basket, being adored. Go read it, humans. Better yet, buy it. I need more treats. Now I’m going back to sleep. ••• Celeste the Cat Boss is “The Boss” at Talk Story Bookstore. She can be
messaged on Instagram at “Celeste_the_Cat_boss.” But being a cat, there is no guarantee she will respond. Ed Justus is the owner of Talk Story Bookstore in Hanapepe. He and his wife Yuriko (above) are usually at the store with Boss Cat.

‘DOLITTLE’ WITH ROBERT DOWNEY JR. IS A DISASTER JAKE COYLE ASSOCIATED PRESS
D
r. Dolittle, who favored animals and shunned humans, was on to something. The century of human history since Hugh Lofting, in 1920, created his eccentric veterinarian character has only made Dolittle a more astute fictional figure, and a natural candidate for big-screen resurrection. Aquaman can talk to the fishes but Dolittle has the ability to converse with all fauna. But if they could speak, no realm of the animal kingdom — no penguin, parakeet or panda — would have anything good to say

ohn Peacock, a former maintenance worker at Kukui Grove Center, repainted the “2020” logo used for a social media contact to match the colors of the Kauai Ocean Discovery center that opened Saturday morning. “I asked him to use the colors they used in the Kauai Ocean Discovery center to re-do the sign,” said Melissa McFerrin-Warrack of KGC. “We’ll have the sign up until after the Ocean Discovery event in February.” Hundreds of people of all ages and places shed their footwear to flow through the doors of the center that will help fulfill a need for a community learning facility that shares the traditions and knowledge of the island’s ocean connections and inspires stewardship. Kauai Ocean Discovery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays at KGC, next to Game Stop.
