hen Robert and Roland Cazimero perform on Kaua‘i, it’s usually for a worthy cause. “We try to give back as much as possible, Robert said. Tonight is no different, as The Brothers Cazimero take to the stage to raise funds for Kaua‘i Hospice. Accompanying them will be singer/songwriter Amy Hanaiali‘i. There will be no shortage of talent during the Kaua‘i Hospice 30th Anniversary Concert, which begins at 7 p.m. at Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center in Puhi. Laurie Miller, executive director of Kaua‘i Hospice, said this is the first time the brothers have performed as a duo on Kaua‘i since 2002. “It’s in celebration of 30 years of caring for one another, she said. “We are extraordinarily delighted that The Brothers Cazimero and Amy Hanaiali‘i are going to provide this amazing concert. The Brothers Cazimero’s

talent, longevity and success over the last four decades has placed them in a league of their own. The two have combined for nearly 40 recordings and three DVDs, have earned more than 20 Na Hoku Hanohano awards and were nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Hawaiian Music Album. In 2006, the men took things one step further with an induction into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. For years, Robert said he and his brother played what they considered contemporary Hawaiian music. Now, their music is often referred to as traditional Hawaiian, which Robert said came as a surprise to both them and their fans. “(It’s) our own version of contemporized Hawaiian music, he said. “Remembering and being a part of what was, in the crossroads of today, and hoping that it will carry through until tomorrow. Today, Robert said he and his brother are in a sort of semi-retired, transitional

period. Instead of putting together a new album, Robert joked that he has been “working selfishly on his own side projects, including his traveling hula halau. For that reason, he said he is looking forward to tonight’s Kaua‘i gig. Any excuse to come to Kaua‘i is good enough for the Cazimeros. Giving back to an organization like Kaua‘i Hospice is just an added bonus. “Whenever we do have the opportunity, we try to go, Robert said. Joining the Cazimeros on stage tonight is Maui native Hanaiali‘i, a four-time Grammy nominee and 18-time Na Hoku Hanohano award recipient. Miller said the benefit concert will allow Kaua‘i Hospice to continue its mission of providing the highest level of care for individuals facing terminal or life-threatening illnesses. General admission tickets start at $80 per person. For more information visit www.kauaihospice.org.

rder up! Another dish of freshly prepared sushi is placed upon the waiting table — a succulent blend of ahi marinated in a sweet ginger soy sauce and topped with blackened tuna and a splash of Chef Victor Heresa Jr.’s special sauce. I just arrived and I’m seated next to the table. Dish after dish of mouth-watering sushi is prepared swiftly and carefully. Sushi mak-

ing, an art form dating back thousands of years, is alive and well on Kaua’i. Heresa, owner of Sushi Bushido, prepares his sushi using the finest Matsumoto knives. He prepares sushi lightning fast — it takes him no more than five to seven minutes to prepare them. I’m greeted by Manager Grant Holcomb. Holcomb said that Sushi Bushido has been in business for 10 years.

“We started out in Anchor Cove — been there for six years — and have been at this location (Kapa‘a) for four years, he said. Previously, Heresa was partners in a restaurant in old Kapa‘a town called Wasabi’s. “I’ve been doing sushi for 26 years, Heresa said. “I started in San Diego for a long time, came back home and went on my own. I used to be a cook and I didn’t get the praise that I wanted in the kitchen, so I

learned how to make sushi. When I found out I can converse with my customers and watch them eat my food, I loved it. Heresa and his line of sushi makers do get the attention they deserve. Cameras are set up by the sushi-making station and their sushi-making is broadcast on televisions throughout Sushi Bushido. Chef Victor Heresa and Chef Chris Sadaoka prepare sushi masterfully in front of cameras and patrons at Sushi Bushido. special requests only. “When people want to request a specialty roll off the menu — it’s not guaranteed we can do it. When we have time, we’ll be more than happy to make it, Heresa said. “Each chef has their own specialty roll and this is mine. Chef Heresa dished out the Bradda Bradda, $16. It consists of tempura super white tuna, crab, avocado, topped off with maguro (yellowfin tuna) and a sweet garlic butter sauce. As soon as Heresa presented the Bradda Bradda, Sadaoka brought his specialty, the Pua Roll, $16.95. “I’ve been here for seven years, Sadaoka said. “The ingredients for this are marinated tempura salmon, avocado, crab and topped of with walu (butterfish), melted wasabi garlic butter, a spicy-sweet garlic soy sauce and bonito flakes with green onions. These sushi chefs work fast. When Sada-

oka was pau with his presentation, Heresa brought out another of his specialty rolls: The Lollipop, $15.95. It consists of yellowtail, yellowfin tuna and fresh salmon that are wrapped in a thin layer of cucumber. It is drizzled in a sweet sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Sauces accompanying this dish include spicy aioli, unagi and sweet chili. Words can’t explain how ono each of these dishes are to eat. You really have to experience these dishes for yourself. Each of these dishes has a life of its own — they are all tender, juicy and they melt in your mouth. The combination of sauces are unbelievable. To experience true sushi making at its finest, while enjoying a lively atmosphere of great artwork and live music, then you must make your way to Sushi Bushido in Kapa‘a and enjoy some of the finest sushi on the island.

ccompanying the wide selection of sushi at Sushi Bushido is a plethora of sake, beers and cocktails. Restaurant Manager Grant Holcomb prepared two sake martinis that are refreshing, tasty and worth every cent: The Lychee Sake Pomegranate Martini and the Green Apple Sake Martini. These two cocktails are new and will be a part of the cocktail menu in the near future. “These drinks are not on the menu yet, but we plan to revamp the cocktail menu and find out what kind of drinks people want, Holcomb said. “The new thing is making mixed drinks out of sake, so we use our flavored sake for these new drinks. The Lychee Sake and Pomegranate Martini The Lychee Sake Pomegranate Martini is priced at $8 and is made out of lychee sake, pomegranate liqueur and Grey Goose Vodka. This seasonal cocktail comes with a seedless lychee fruit. The lychee sake, pomegranate liqueur and Grey Goose combination creates a sweet blend that goes well with any sushi dish on the menu. Green Apple Sake Martini The Green Apple Sake Martini is also priced at $8. This simple concoction is

made with two ingredients: Green Apple sake and Blueberry Stoli Vodka. The combination of this cocktail creates a flavor comparable to Jolly Rancher candy — sweet and yummy. From 2 to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, is happy hour at Sushi Bushido. Holcomb said patrons can enjoy the Golden Roll — salmon, tuna, crab and avocado rolled in seasoned panko and served tempura style on an avocado unago aioli — for 50 percent off. Typically the Golden Roll sells for $10.95 for the 14 karat and $17.95 for the 24 karat. “We do the Golden Roll for 50 percent off, we do Kirin Ichiban at a discounted price, hot sake at a discounted price, local beers at a discounted price and some hand-rolled sushi for $3.75.

ASSOCIATED PRESS CHRISTY LEMIRE

All sparkle, but no soul in ‘Great Gatsby’

I

f any piece of classic American literature should be depicted on film with wildly decadent and boldly inventive style, it’s “The Great Gatsby. After all, who was the character of Jay Gatsby himself if not a spinner of grandiose tales and a peddler of lavish dreams? And Baz Luhrmann would seem like the ideal director to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story to the screen yet again, to breathe new life into these revered words, having shaken up cultural institutions previously with films like “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and “Moulin Rouge! This is the man who dared to stage the iconic balcony scene in a swimming pool, so mixing in a little Jay-Z amid the Jazz Age standards strangely makes sense. But in Luhrmann’s previous films, there still existed a fundamental understanding of the point of the stories he was telling; beneath their gorgeous trappings, they still reflected the heart and the purpose of the works from which they were drawn. His “Great Gatsby is all about the glitter but it has no soul — and the fact that he’s directed it in 3-D only magnifies the feeling of artificiality. Luhrmann’s adaptation, which he cowrote with Craig Pearce, lacks the sense of melancholy and longing that emanated from the novel’s pages, even though the script invokes Fitzgerald’s prose early and often through voiceover from Tobey Maguire as our narrator, guide and Fitzgerald stand-in Nick Carraway. Sometimes, as in the book’s

famous, final sentence, the words pop right up on screen and linger in the air. Gatsby himself, played with well-coifed panache by Leonardo DiCaprio, too often comes off as a needy, clingy stalker rather than a tragic figure and a victim of the American dream. But in general, though, Luhrmann’s “Gatsby doesn’t get the fact that the book was intended as a critical look at a crumbling dream. It gets too caught up in the buzz of the party. The plot, real quickly, in case it’s been a while since 10th-grade English class: The year is 1922, and young Nick Carraway has moved into a cottage on the nouveau riche Long Island enclave of West Egg with dreams of making it big on the New York Stock Exchange. Across the bay is the old-moneyed community of East Egg, where Nick’s cousin, the dazzling socialite Daisy, lives with her cheating, blue-blooded husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). But everyone, regardless of where they’re from, gathers each weekend for wild parties at Gatsby’s palatial abode — which happens to be next door to Nick’s humble house. The normally mysterious Gatsby befriends Nick with hopes of reconnecting with Daisy, the one who got away five years earlier. Carey Mulligan’s Daisy is more of an idea than a fully fleshed-out person, but then again, maybe that’s always been the point: that she’s alluring but tantalizingly out of reach. DiCaprio, meanwhile — despite the usual depth and edge he can bring to a role — comes off here as a parody of a Fitzgerald character, tossing around Gatsby’s jovial greeting of “old sport so often in his affected accent, it could make for a dangerous drinking game. Now that would truly be intoxicating.

here’s a new force on Kaua‘i’s music scene that wasted no time turning heads. They call themselves the Kaua‘i Rhythm Kings, and have no problem living up to their name. The seven-man group performed for the first time Saturday at Joe’s on the Green in Po‘ipu during the Cinco de Mayo Dance Party. After what frontman Kevin “Swampdaddy Rogers described as a bit of a “shaky first set, the band settled in nicely, working through a mix of New Orleans funk, Memphis soul, Chicago blues and East and West coast swing. Notable numbers included The Meters’ “Hey Pocky Way, Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon and Mack Rice’s “Mustang Sally, always a crowd pleaser. The audience welcomed a surprise performance by Los Angeles blues guitarist Solomon King, who performed “Jack Me Up, a song featured on TV drama series “True Blood. Overall, Rogers said the band was happy with its debut performance and had a lot of fun. “Everybody liked what we did last night, he said Monday. “Wait until they hear us a few months from now. It comes down to this: If you like to dance to rhythm and blues, you will want to clear your schedule for this fresh, horn-heavy, groovin’ Kaua‘i group. The Kaua‘i Rhythm Kings’ next scheduled performance is June 2 during Taste of Hawai‘i in Wailua, but Rogers said to keep an eye out for additional gigs.

The crowd Saturday at Joe’s on the Green could not resist taking to the dance floor.
