ary DeThouars wasn’t nervous about auditioning for “The Voice on Saturday. She is now, after being asked about whether she was worried, scared, stressed or all three. “I’m getting nervous, she said, laughing. “No matter what, you have your confidence, but it’s easy to get distracted. “I’m just focusing, breathing, knowing that I’ll do my best. The lead singer with the band “UndeRated, left Kauai Wednesday, bound for Las Vegas, where she’ll sing a few tunes with hopes of eventually appearing on the national TV program judged by the likes of Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher. “I’m excited, however it goes, she said. “I feel really blessed to be doing it. She declined to say which songs she’ll perform. Since one is acapela, she didn’t want to tip off the competition. “I’m kind of keeping it quiet, the brunette said, smiling. “Just in case someone sings my song. DeThouars and UndeRated perform several times a week around Kauai. They appear 8 to 11 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Tortilla Republic in Poipu, once a month at Trees Lounge in Kapaa, and have played in Hanapepe’s art night, and most recently, at Taste of Hawaii. UndeRated has been performing Top 40 songs on Kauai for two years, and before that, it was a “progressive rock band.

The band spent time in the studio this week recording tracks and helping DeThouars prepare for her shot at the big time. She’ll be trying to avoid talking too much – yes, she’s talkative — and will like drink some tea with honey to keep the vocal chords strong. Oh, and not so much coffee. “A lot of rest. re you looking for an eatery that has healthy, onolicious food? The Coconut Cup Juice Bar and Cafe has got your back and then some, serving foods and drinks using locally-sourced ingredients. Owner Christa Hall opened shop in 2007. Hall always wanted to open a smoothie shop, and when the opportunity presented itself, she didn’t hesitate for a second. “I went to (Kauai Community College) and got a two-year hospitality degree, and I wanted to run a smoothie shop because I really love smoothies,” Hall said. When you arrive at The Coconut Cup, the first thing you’ll notice is the healthy amount of produce that is used to create all the delicious foods and drinks. Hall works with many local farmers. The farmers provide Hall with mangos, avocados, salad greens, ginger, papaya and bananas.
“I get my produce from local farmers — Moloaa Organicaa, Govinda Organic Farm, Mary Norris, Earth Wind and Sky Farms,” Hall said. “We have a lot of good farms. I really like I can get most of my products from local farmers who live right around here.” With a menu full of fresh fruits and vegetables, The Coconut Club might seem like a restaurant for vegetarians only, but there are several items on the menu that has its fair share of meat and protein. “We have turkey sandwiches, ham sandwiches, breakfast burritos,” Hall said. “It’s good to have both because, you know, not everyone is vegetarian — I’m not a vegetarian.” Fresh food is the only way to roll, and a lack of storage space is a blessing in disguise for The Coconut Cup. “I don’t order anything in bulk because I don’t have much space, but it’s good because everything we
have is fresh,” Hall said. When I visited Hall, she presented her newest items, the Breakfast Burrito and Vegetarian Breakfast Burrito, and some classic favorites, the Acai Bowl and The Pineapple Express Wrap. The Breakfast Burrito, priced at $8.95, consists of organic eggs, black forest ham, cheddar cheese and is wrapped with a Sinaloa Spinach Tortilla. For the veggie lover, the Vegetarian Breakfast Burrito, also $8.95, consists of organic eggs, cheddar cheese, organic spinach, red peppers and is also wrapped with a Sinaloa Spinach Tortilla. One more thing, the breakfast burritos are served with Sal’s locally-made salsa. You might know Sal, who sells his salsa out of Princeville. The Coconut Cup has five different wraps to choose from. They range from $8.95 to $9.95. Hall brought out her bestseller, The Pineapple Express, $9.95. The ingredients for

haracters are frequently urged to “release the beast in “The Purge, a high-concept home-invasion shocker set in a future where one night a year, all crime is legal. But what should be a clammy exercise in claustrophobic, queasy tension becomes, in the hands of writer/director James DeMonaco, an underpowered compendium
of over-familiar scare tactics and sledgehammer-subtle social satire. The intriguingly nightmarish premise may well rustle up a decent opening weekend for a picture that comes with the imprimatur of producer Michael Bay before the lukewarm word of mouth hastens its trip to DVD and VOD. sub-genre is, of course, ideal for small-screen viewing, turning the comforting spaces of the domestic environment into shadowy hiding places for miscreants. Five years ago, Bryan Bertino’s “The Strangers opened one weekend earlier to reap healthy returns, and DeMonaco tips his hat to that predecessor by having his psychopaths also don
68<<82:H Ÿ?DA64½ E>83 >5 38BC8=2C8>=
spooky masks as they comea-calling on their middle-class suburban prey. But where Bertino scored by keeping external details to an absolute minimum, DeMonaco overloads “The Purge with all kinds of cumbersome exposition, mostly delivered via TV-news broadcasts. It’s 2022, and in the United States, crime and poverty have dwindled
drastically since the election of the “New Founding Fathers — presumably in 2014. This thinly veiled fictional version of the Tea Party (“a nation reborn!) wasted no time in introducing “The Purge, a nationwide catharsis, which runs for 12 hours starting at 7 p.m. on March 21, during which time the violent, even homicidal unleashing of rage is positively encouraged as a patriotic duty. While the plausibility of such an extreme scenario springing up in less than a decade is debatable, more feasible is the accompanying boom in private security spending as citizens who can afford to barricade themselves into their homes do so. This lines the pockets of folks like security-biz entrepreneur James Sandin (Ethan Hawke), who has equipped his own sprawling residence with the latest intruder-repelling technology. But no “lockdown is airtight, and the Sandin family find themselves under siege when they provide sanctuary to a homeless man (Edwin Hodge). This unnamed, injured fellow is first seen fleeing a well-heeled lynch mob led by a preppy
individual identified in the credits as “Polite Stranger (Rhys Wakefield). DeMonaco has spoken of his debt to Sam Peckinpah’s “Straw Dogs and John Carpenter’s “Assault on Precinct 13, the latter providing Hawke with a star vehicle via the DeMonaco-scripted 2005 remake. (Hawke was also the lead in DeMonaco’s little-seen directorial debut “Staten Island.) The suburban-insecurity theme also stirs memories of David Fincher’s “Panic Room, Jonathan Kaplan’s “Unlawful Entry and even Neil Labute’s “Lakeview Terrace; the barely concealed bloodlust of the bourgeoisie recalls “The Last House on the Left; while the idea of state-sanctioned, carefully contained mayhem was executed on a grander scale in “The Hunger Games and “Rollerball. The Purge never threatens to become more than the sum of its various parts, however. And it’s frustrating that while we hear about the horrors unfolding elsewhere in the country, all we see is brief glimpses of surveillancecamera footage that hint at unbridled savagery. “

t’s more than just a dance show, according to Jennifer Bell-Grey. “It’s hard to define, but it’s an extravaganza work of performance art, she said. “One-hundred percent entertaining from start to finish and something in it catches everyone’s eyes, imaginations and hearts. A cast of 80 talented dancers from Kauai Dance Center are set to take the stage tonight, performing original choreography in ballet, hip-hop and contemporary dance. Co-directors Jennifer and her husband Mel Bell-Grey promise an exciting and innovative one-night-only performance. Presented by Eyes Wide Open Productions, “World Inner Motion begins at 5 p.m. at the Kauai War Memorial
Convention Hall in Lihue. “The Dance-A-Thon (in February) was a performance of the students to raise money in order to put on the extravaganza, said Jennifer, also an instructor at KDC. “This is our once-ayear grand affair. The rain may have canceled a Garden Island Renegade Rollerz scrimmage game last weekend, but it did little to dampen the spirits of the players and those cheering for them. In all, about 30 people, including many close friends and family members, gathered on June 1 at the Kapaa Hockey Rink to watch the all-women team’s Clean Girls take on the Mean Girls in one of their last exhibition games before the Battle of the Islands next month. Many of the spectators, who brought their own chairs and mats for the event, opted to sit along one side of the skating rink to watch the game while some of the adjacent bleachers were cordoned off for ADA compliance upgrades. The game, which ended shortly after the first half ended, was a clear runaway for the Clean Girls, who captured the game with a more than 30-point lead. Women interested in skating in the flat track roller derby league can visit www.gardenislandrenegaderollers.com or visit any of the practices on the Eastside at the Kapaa In-line Hockey Rink or on the Westside at the Smokey Valley Clubhouse in Waimea. Eastside practices take place for cadets and open skating from 4 to 5 p.m. on Sundays and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Eastside veteran skate times are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sundays and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Westside practices take place for veteran skaters from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
