t’s on the record. Reggae/dancehall artist Wayne Marshall — who has toured all over the world (and back again) with fellow reggae artist Damien Marley — is the most excited about his upcoming Hawaii tour dates. “I have never been to Hawaii,â€? said Marshall from a Miami hotel. “What I know of Hawaii, it’s definitely reggae country. ‌ I have been on the road for over a year now with Damien (Marley) in various countries. Hawaii is my most anticipated place to visit that I haven’t visited yet.â€? In addition to Marley, Marshall will be performing with fellow Ghetto Youths International (the family-owned label owned by Julian, Damien and Stephen Marley) artists Jo Mersa, Black-Am-I and Christopher Ellis Sunday at Kilohana Pavilion. “I will definitely be bringing that island vibration, and bring that reggae and dancehall vibe to the fullest,â€? Marshall said. “Every time I come to a place I’ve never been before, I’m more encouraged to do a wicked job — making friends and doing what I need to do to establish my name there.â€? While Marshall has collaborated with some musical heavyweights including Sean Paul and Elephant Man, and launched two albums (2003’s “Marshall Lawâ€? and 2008’s “Tru Story!), the Jamaican singer feels like he is just beginning to hit his stride. When I kick back in a chill mode, I always listen to her. Who are your influences? WM: There’s so many. In reggae music, you have artists like Jimmy Cliff ‌ Over the years, I have been influenced my the Marleys themselves. Bob Marley, of course, is an icon in music. I have been influenced by hip-hop, Jay-Z, the best of the best. What advice do you have for young musicians? WM: Surround yourself with good people, who understand the music industry and the theory of the music. Music has certain rules to abide by, and once you mastered those rules, that’s where you get your freedom. Music isn’t man-made, it was designed with cosmos. You get a spiritual edge to music, and once you align yourself with the music, you let go, and you get the creativity.

n the first Saturday of the month, from 5 to 9 p.m., Kountry Kitchen transforms from a breakfast and lunch destination to a Cuban fiesta, serving authentic Cuban cuisine that is exclusive to Kauai. Susana Espinosa has owned and operated Kountry Kitchen for the past 18 years. She always wanted to share her family’s Cuban-style recipes with the public. Her time to share her love of Cuban food arrived when Kapaa began its monthly first Saturday street festival, which features artists, live music, food, fashion and more. “I figured with the connection of the art walk in Kapaa, I would share my Cuban food with Kauai,” Espinosa said. “I’m very surprised at the support that I have received from locals and tourists. This is our fifth month.” Depending on the availability of ingredients, Espinosa said the menu changes monthly. “I try to pass on the price of everything to my customers,” Espinosa
said. “I try to find (ingredients) that are affordable for everyone, so it can be a family outing that won’t cost an arm and a leg.” Even with monthly changes to the menu, pork, beef, chicken and seafood dishes are always available. Espinosa said Cuban food is a combination of African, Caribbean and Spanish influence. “Cuban food is very different from, let’s say, Mexican food,” Espinosa said. “It doesn’t have many hot peppers.” Two main staples in Cuban food include congris and yuca. Congris is made of black beans and rice, seasoned with cumin, garlic, onions and black peppers. Yuca, or cassava, is a root that is a good source of carbohydrates. Espinosa said the main ingredients used to make Cuban food are lime, sour oranges and cumin. Fiesta Cubana at Kountry Kitchen offers appetizers, complete dinners and desserts. First on menu was the For vegetarian lovers, the Bonita En Salsa is sure to please with its yellow sweet potatoes topped with diced tomatoes, Appetizer Platter For Two, $12. e travel (figuratively speaking) from Cuba to the Philippines for this week’s drink of the week. Located in Harbor mall in Lihue, Halo-Halo Corner delivers a smackdown of delicious drinks and desserts ranging from smoothies, shave ice, iced coffees, shakes and, its most well-known dessert-beverage, Halo-Halo. Halo means mix in the Tagalog language, so there is no shortage of mixed-ingredients in this fantastic concoction. When I asked Halo-Halo employee Ida Leasiolagi what the ingredients were in their Halo-Halo, she responded by saying, “Get plenty of everything.” She wasn’t joking. Its healthy mixture of ingredients is perfect for hot, summer days. The Halo-Halo consists of evaporated milk, shave ice, cooked-sweet banana, coconut, sugar-plum jam, ube and vanilla ice cream, flan, sweet potato and azuki and other sweet beans. The Halo-Halo at Halo-Halo Corner is $6 and is consumed in two ways — you drink it in a melted form or eat it as a frozen dessert. Ida served me Halo-Halo in an ice cream bowl, and I had no idea how to eat it. When I was a kid, I always had it as a drink. When the lines of thirsty people dwindled to nothing, Ida took a break and showed me how to eat and drink this Filipino delicacy. “You like eat ‘em or drink ‘em slightly melted.” She took a straw, jabbed the shave ice multiple times, then mixed all the ingredients into a drinkable form. If you haven’t had Halo-Halo before, I would

ith his dark eyebrows deeply furrowed and gleaming white teeth firmly clamped shut, Henry Cavill winces when asked if Superman is treated like a terrorist in “Man of Steel. His reaction is somewhat understandable. The charming British actor should feel very protective of the character — one of the biggest icons in pop culture. Besides, Henry Cavill is Super-
man now. It’s a fair question though, given that Cavill’s Superman, his bulky frame encased in a deep-blue rendition of the Superman uniform, is handcuffed and attacked by the military at certain points in the retelling of the superhero’s origin. While the idea of Superman as a threatening outsider has been explored in other mediums, it’s new to the big screen.
“In the previous movies, it was just kind of accepted that he was a superhuman, but what would happen if this dude really did exist? said Cavill. “If he was discovered, he would probably be put in a room and experimented on. That’s very clear in his choices throughout the movie. He’s become very adept at being who he is — but just not so openly. “Man of Steel centers on an
adult Clark Kent — or Kal-El, as he’s known back on his home planet of Krypton — at the inception of his superheroic identity. (The name Superman is actually only uttered a couple of times in the film.) It’s a matter-of-fact account of how a much more hesitant Clark rises up and responds when earth is threatened by Kryptonian outcasts. At the beginning of “Man of

Steel, which opens Friday, this version of the character doesn’t wear spectacles, work at The Daily Planet, soar through the skies or own any clothes with a giant S plastered across the chest. He’s a drifter. He says more with actions than words, something the 30-year-old star of 2011’s “Immortals completely understands. With an emphasis on folksy imagery instead of high-flying action, early “Man of Steel footage suggested a darker take on the superhero. While the tone is certainly more emotional than previous live-action adaptations, the filmmakers — which include “The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan as a producer and writer — haven’t diagnosed Superman with depression. Nolan, Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer traded the bumbling, nerdy Clark in favor of a more contemplative one who stays under the radar working odd jobs. It’s far, far and away from Christopher Reeve’s jocular interpretation of the role, which Cavill won after earlier missing the part in 2006’s “Superman Returns to Brandon Routh. Still, Snyder is quick to note this edition of the Metropolis Marvel is “not not Superman. For everything that feels different about the Superman in “Man of Steel, there’s still
plenty that’s recognizable, most notably, Clark’s highly principled attitude instilled in him by his Midwestern adoptive parents (played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane). Faith — to both God and country — is an integral theme in “Man of Steel. There’s no looking past the religious allegories that have been associated with Superman mythology for decades. This Man of Tomorrow is 33 years old today and seeks counsel at a church in a time of crisis. Snyder believes his Superman supports religion but also questions it. Another contrast to previous Superman lore is the evolution of the relationship between Clark and Lois, who’s portrayed by Adams as a take-no-prisoners, Pulitzer Prize-winning war reporter. She encounters the last son of Krypton before even he fully understands his intergalactic backstory. Ultimately, Superman needs Lois as much as she needs him. The expectations for “Man of Steel are higher than any building in Metropolis. The film could accomplish for Warner Bros. what “Superman Returns failed to do, namely, launch a film franchise akin to “The Dark Knight. Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com, expects it to leap over the $100 million mark in a single bound on opening weekend.

ictoria Kaiulani Cleghorn was not only known for her beauty, but her intelligence. And while many may see her story as a tragedy — she died at the age of 23 while fighting to see the Kingdom of Hawaii restored to its people — her legacy lives on through mele, movies and merriment. On June 22, the Historic Waimea Theater will host the premiere of “In the Footsteps of our Princess, a documentary that turns the lens on what Westside residents have done the past decade to honor Kaiulani. and video of young women who portrayed the princess during the annual Princess Kaiulani Festival in Hanapepe. The event includes a Hollywood-style film premiere, complete with a red carpet, a meet the stars after party and live entertainment from musician Cyril Pahinui. “We’ve had 11 different young women portray Kaiulani, and they have something to say about that experience, said Mark Jeffers, director of Storybook Theatre in Hanapepe, who has spearheaded the annual festival. The young woman who are chosen — whether
it’s by their kumu hula or school headmaster — to portray Kaiulani are asked to study the life of the princess. Kaiulani was heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii. But when the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893, Kaiulani traveled abroad to publicly denounce the injustices brought to the Hawaiian people. “The theme of the movie is really what we believe what Princess Kaiulani wanted for the children of Hawaii, which was to stand up. Stand up for what they believe to be their nation, and that’s what she did, Jeffers said. “Unfortunately, the people
around her made light of her, and treated her like a child or savage. Kaiulani herself used every opportunity to stand up and speak on behalf of her people. Jeffers, who has produced festivals since the 1980s, said in 2012, the festival received support from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, which enabled it to explore the culture of Niihau. “We honored Niihau culture, cuisine and music, Jeffers said. “We created a school residency program where the Niihau children spent a week at Eleele Elementary School and shared who they were from Niihau island.
A silent auction at the film premiere will benefit six Niihau children who will travel to Oahu to celebrate Princess Kaiulani’s birthday at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. Robert Zolkovsky spent the better part of a month editing the film, and is ready for the upcoming debut. “It’s telling a really interesting story,â€? he said. “I’m certainly learning a lot of myself. ‌ Biographically, (Kaiulani) died rather young at 23. She was in line for the throne, and if she had been queen, she would have stood her ground. She was very strong ‌ we may have been in a different place if she
lived. Zolkovsky said one of his favorite moments in the film are the five “spirit scenes. “They are voice-overs that involve some stuff we shot in certain actions and interspersed with historic photos, he said. Whether people are looking for a fun evening or want to learn more about Kaiulani, the film is designed to spark a conversation about Hawaiian culture. “This is just the beginning, Jeffers added. “The story needs to be told, again and again. Tickets are $20 per person. Visit www.storybook.org for more information and details.
