avay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers are known for classic blues and jazz made the popular way, way back in the 1930s, ’40s, ’50s and even the ’60s. “It’s pretty wide ranging, said Chris Siebert, pianist for the band. Wide ranging, indeed. Try swinging over to country, too. The band’s source of inspiration for its upcoming album is Patsy Cline, one of country’s biggest female stars, who died at the age of 30 in 1963 in a plane crash. Her spirit, though, and her impact on music, lives on. “She was a big influence on me from the get-go, said Smith, who arrived on Kauai Monday night to prepare for Saturday’s show, which is part of the Red

Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers will be performing a number of Cline’s collection during the concert, including “Crazy,“Walkin’ After Midnight, and “She’s Got You. They’re also working on an album titled “Crazy in Love, which will be nothing but Patsy Cline songs performed in the blues/jazz style done so well by Smith and company. “I love those Patsy Cline songs, she said Tuesday. These days, many might be accustomed to hearing Cline’s favorites in karaoke parties. What those attending
Saturday’s concert will hear won’t be anything like those versions. Smith is excited, and inspired, by the arrangements and touches she and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers will bring to those beautiful ballads. “We’ll be putting those in a different light, Smith said. Chris Siebert, band pianist, said he was “raised in the spirit of country, and knew then Cline set the standard. “She’s one of the great singers, he said. Their seven-piece band — four horns, piano, bass and drums — will give a new feel
and sound to Cline’s songs. “Crazy in Love, Smith said, is their tribute to one of their strongest influences. She believes it features some of the band’s best work. “We’re really, really proud of it, Smith said. “I think people will really love it. Smith, Siebert and band members were out and about on Kauai Tuesday, sightseeing and hoping to get in some swimming and hiking. “Lavay and I love Kauai, Siebert said. “Anytime you guys want to bring us out here, we love it, he added. Likewise for Smith. She said they’re able to bring some of the best music from the Mainland to the island. “I’m always thrilled to go anywhere with my band, es-
pecially Hawaii, she said. They’re looking forward to Saturday’s 90-minute concert on one of their favorite places in the world. Fans will hear what Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers are known for — classic jazz and blues. Other Smith influences include Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Billie Holiday. Smith noted that Cline was country and Holiday was jazz. She loves listening to both because each knew how to reflect their feelings into their music. “One was jazz, one was country, but they still hit that main vein, Smith said. Concertgoers, Smith said, should be ready to get up and dance. She promises it will be a good time.

“I’m so excited. We have the world’s greatest band, she said. Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, based in San Francisco, are the headline performers at the 6th annual Red Clay Jazz Festival main concert on Saturday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Kauai Lagoons. The Kauai Concert Association will be organizing the festival. Also appearing will be the Maui Jazz Quartet and the Pro-Am Band from Kauai, a 12-piece ensemble of local jazz and blues musicians. pen for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Olympic Cafe has tasty grinds, a bird’s eye view of old Kapaa town, open air seating and is always filled with wonderful people. Upon arriving to Olympic Cafe, I was greeted by General Manager Jakki Nelson, who welcomed me with her warm,
Texan smile. The original Olympic Cafe restaurant opened shop 13 years ago, just down the road where Backyards Bar and Grill is currently located. Nelson isn’t too sure about how Olympic Cafe got its name, but she suspects that its name came about because “the former owners were friends with Duke Kahanamoku, a surfing legend. of running businesses back and forth from Kauai and the Big Island, Trujillo hired Jakki Nelson as Olympic Cafe’s general manager in July 2005. If you’re a foodie, you might know Jakki Nelson — she runs this little, annual event called Taste of Hawaii. “Troy and I had a mutual friend, Nelson said. “He said, ‘Jackie, you totally need to go to Kauai. It’s so you. You love to hike, you love to camp, you love to kayak.’ “This is the best job ever, Nelson added. “There’s always great customers, and we have fun employees. After trading stories for about 10 minutes, Nelson got into the real, juicy portion of our interview: the onolicious grinds that come in hearty (and I mean hearty) portions. “We open for breakfast,

Nelson said. “We have, I think, one of the biggest breakfast menus on the island — we have 38 breakfast specials. Nelson picked entrees from Olympic Cafe’s breakfast menu. The Breakfast Wrap, Strawberry Pancakes and Tomato and Basil Omelet (a dish featured at this year’s Taste of Hawaii) came out of the kitchen in a timely fashion. “That’s one thing with our breakfast, we prepare it fast, Nelson said.
When Nelson brought out the Breakfast Wrap, $11.50, my eyes focused on its large portions of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes and cheese wrapped in a spinach tortilla. Like all breakfast wraps, it comes with your choice of sliced melon or papaya. Next was a full stack of three extra-large pancakes, drizzled with strawberry syrup and topped with whipped cream and whole strawberries. It goes for $8.99 and is one of eight varieties the restaurant offers.
When it comes to omelets, Olympic Cafe prepares them using three extra-large, AAA eggs, fresh herbs and veggies. They are served with your choice of home-fried potatoes, rice, papaya or melon. Featured at this year’s Taste of Hawaii, the Tomato and Basil Omelet, $11.50, contains fresh tomato and basil with garlic and Romano cheese — it’s an omelet that’s large and made from simple ingredients, but onolicious. Covering Olympic Cafe was a real treat. Remember the wraps that I eyed earlier? Well, Jackki wrapped them up for me to take home to my family. She then gave away the omelet and the pancakes to some lucky and very grateful patrons. Great service, indeed.
ummer is officially here (well, on this side of the hemisphere, anyway). On Kauai, that means it’s time to welcome our loving friends: heat and high humidity. Although we love some intense sunshine from time to time, we can combat its powerful rays with a delicious, refreshing beverage. At Olympic Cafe, you have your choice to cool down with beer, tropical cocktails, juices and teas. I suggest you try out a Loose Leaf Tea on the rocks. Stationed out of New Jersey, Loose Leaf Tea offers 100 percent premium organic ingredients. Olympic Cafe carries 14 different flavors. Categories include organic herbal infusion teas, scented and blended teas, plus black teas and green teas. All the teas are priced at $4.99 and are served hot or on the rocks. This week’s drink is the Caribbean Cooler, a scented and blended tea consisting of mango, passion fruit, orange and lemon. It’s delicious to say the least — a little cane sugar wouldn’t hurt, but it’s delicious regardless. If you’re in the mood for tropical cocktails, try out the Kauai 5-0, $9.95, a blend of light and dark rum with guava, pineapple juice and a splash of Sprite. The Blue Kauaian, $9.95, is also a winner, which is a mixture of coconut, pineapple, light rum and Blue Curacao. General Manager Jakki Neslon said that happy hour at Olympic Cafe runs from 3 to 7 p.m. daily. Drinks are $1 off and domestic drafts are $2 off regular prices. Appetizers are $4.99 and are available only during happy hour. “Appetizers include basic bar food: pot

ome to think of it, Hollywood films and magic shows have something in common: You pay your money, and you want to believe. Even if it’s exceedingly hard to do. At the start of “Now You See Me, a magic-themed heist movie with a high-powered cast including Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson, you really want to believe. The idea is fresh, the introductory scenes enticing. Plus, the actual magic performances that anchor the film, directed by Louis Leterrier, are fun — and for a while you almost forget that you’re merely watching other people watch a magic show. But then the dialogue turns formulaic, the plot gets increasingly hard to follow — even a film about magic needs an underlying logic — and character development seems to come to an utter halt, with interesting possibilities left unexplored. It all builds up to a dramatic reveal at the end, one that, like the traditional rabbit in the hat, you weren’t expecting. But by then, it’s a bit too late. You’ve already disengaged. It’s too bad, because the

film has a great premise. Four professional illusionists are called together by a mysterious leader. Eisenberg is the cocky sleight-of-hand wizard who likes to run things and take all the credit. (Stop thinking about Mark Zuckerberg — wrong movie!) Isla Fisher is his former assistant, and an escape artist. Harrelson is an expert hypnotist, and Dave Franco is the talented street magician. Soon they’re a formidable team: The Four Horsemen. They thrill a magic-show crowd in Las Vegas with a tantalizing heist that involves robbing a bank in Paris by “teleporting a man from the audience across the pond, then rewarding the crowd with stolen euro notes. Enter Ruffalo’s rough-edged FBI agent, Dylan Rhodes, who swigs liquor and coffee and Alka-Seltzer, partnered by a winsome French Interpol agent with the odd name of Alma Dray, played by Melanie Laurent. She’s not all that believable, though it’s great fun to witness her comeback at one point to Dylan’s brutish order to “Stay in the car. (You go, Alma!) In his pursuit of the Horsemen, Dylan will run up against Thaddeus Bradley — Freeman,
having a good time in the role of a former magician who’s now a reality host, exposing current magicians. He shows Dylan how the Paris heist was likely achieved, but the harder job is figuring out who’s in charge, and what they’re up to next. Because, as characters tend to say in this film, the key thing is to be a step ahead of
everyone else. of magic equipment. Freeman is fun to watch, Then Franco’s Jack Wilder as is Caine, as a presumed brandishes a deck of playing benefactor of the magicians. cards, his last weapon left. Ruffalo offers the most fully fleshed-out character, and he can be very funny. In one entertaining fight sequence, he slugs it out with Franco (yes, brother of James) amid capes and wands and all sorts
“Really? Ruffalo asks, with a priceless look on his face. Turns out, playing cards handled correctly can cause pain. Other actors are somewhat wasted in this script by Boaz Yakin, Ed Solomon, and Edward Ricourt. Harrelson’s Merritt McKinney is wise-cracking, Fisher’s Henley Reeves is feisty, and Eisenberg’s J. Daniel Atlas is high-strung and fast-talking, but beyond that we know little. A romantic past is hinted at between Fisher and Eisenberg’s characters, then pretty much dropped. As for Ruffalo and Laurent, they get their moment, but it would have been nice to see some meaty dialogue between them. And you know it’s getting formulaic when, at a climactic moment, the 10-year-old boy watching the film next to you mutters: “That always happens. You’ll smile at the enjoyable final reveal, patently absurd as it is. But you won’t be feeling much magic.

ove over Hanapepe and Kapaa. Kilauea is ready for its own art night. This Saturday marks the debut of Kilauea Art Night, a three-hour family-friendly event featuring local artists, clothing designers, jewelry makers and entertainers at the Kilauea Plantation Center, located along Kilauea Road. The event is from 5 to 8 p.m. Courtney Zietz, owner of See That Fly — an innovative design company that recycles T-shirts into one-of-kind bags — has been playing around with an art night in the North Shore for seven years. But it wasn’t until recently — June 4 to be exact — that she began to seriously plan for the event. “I moved here from New York City, so I would attend
the Young Designers Market, and that really inspired me, Zietz said on a sunny weekday in Kilauea. “I wanted to create something like that on the North Shore because it seemed like there was a very limited outlet, and there’s such a rich pool of talented artists. To get started, Zietz knew the artisans she invited had to be local, ecologically conscious and embrace the spirit of the Kilauea community. The list was easy to compile, since Zietz said she is surrounded by “cool and inspiring people from all walks of life. There will be more than 20 local artisans at art night, including nine artists who offer everything from classical French plein air paintings, to award-winning photography, to abstract canvases and all
that is in between. Zietz’s recycled handbag company will also be debuting a line of tank tops at the event, printed and created on island. “I do all the work, from cutting to sewing to laundering to printing, I pay an artist each month to come up with an original design and work with them, Zietz, who recycles about 800 T-shirts a month for her handbag line, said. The art night will also serve as a platform for the debut for many of the artisans. Human Revolution Clothing, an apparel company that promotes a “seed to shirt movement, will have samples of shirts and hats stitched with vintage saris and scarves from a recent trip to India; Kopa Kauai will debut a line of creamy, handmade
soaps outside of its online shop; and pop artist Michelle Marsh, aka Michi, will feature products from her new line, Fin, which also promotes free diving. Unko Funki (aka Dan Bonow) — who has been playing live music since the 1960s — will be performing with his full band. During a set break, Pua Laa and her keiki martial arts and keiki hula classes will perform for 20 minutes. Zietz was also conscious to invite vendors who promote recycling, which is why Refill Hawaii will be present, a company that encourages people to reuse their existing plastic containers and fill them with eco-friendly cleaning products. She also invited emerging artists she has discovered and wants to share with the rest of
the island community. Taylor Lowe, a sushi chef, is one of those emerging artists. She takes fish carcasses home and paints their portraits. Leticia A. Elzaudria is another artist, who makes original posters from stencils and illustrations . “I really wanted to share these people, Zietz said. “Everyone’s work really inspires me. The Kilauea Plantation Center, which houses Hunter Gatherer, Kilauea Fish Market, Metamorphose Yoga Studio and Oskar’s Boutique, will host the vendors while staying open through the event. “Not only are the artisans cool, but the store owners are incredible, Zietz said. Oskar’s was the first store to carry Zietz’s handbags in 2010, and owner Annie Sadler latched onto the idea of an art

last weekend as hundreds of people attended the annual bon dance festival. The festival, which kicked off on June 21 and ended on June
22, marked the third dance in this year’s obon season calendar on Kauai. In addition to the mixture of traditional Japanese and
Okinawan songs that were provided to dancers of all ages, this year’s festivities included a shi-shi-mai (Okinawan lion dance) and taiko (Japanese
drum) performances from several local groups, including Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii and Taiko Kauai. The festival also featured a traveling display from the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii in Honolulu based upon “Japanese Buddhist Temples in Hawaii: An Illustrated Guide, written by George J. Tanabe, a professor
emeritus at the University of Hawaii’s Department of Religion, and his wife, Willa Tanabe, a professor emeritus in UH’s Department of Art and Art History.
