Get out your sequined flapper dress and don your best Sacque suit and boater hat — and be sure to remember the secret password. Tortilla Republic and Kauai Music Scene is hosting a 1920s speakeasy party. It starts at 7 p.m. today at Tortilla Republic located at the Shops of Kukuiula. Tickets are $90 in advance and $100 at the door. But instead of a ticket, guests will be given a password they must use when they enter the event. Entrance includes a five-course feast paired with cocktails from the era designed by The Feral Pig’s Dave Powers (who specializes in historical cocktails), plus big band sounds from the Rum Runners and burlesque and aerial silk dancers. The party will also include an authentic absinthe bar. Kristin Young of Kauai Music Scene said the event came about when Jordan James, who owns Tortilla Republic, poised a simple question: What would you do if I gave you the upstairs of my restaurant for one night? The answer was instantaneous: Host a speakeasy party. “We went through it together, and we designed what it was going to look like, we got (James’) chef to design the menu, and we got Dave Powers from The Feral Pig ‌ who is putting a pairing together.â€? Young also got the Rum Runners to perform.

“They were actually put together specifically for this event,�Young said. “I’m sure they are going to continue.� The jazz/swing band includes Peggy Lake on vocals, Will Lydgate on acoustic bass, Steve Dubey on trumpet and Hank Curtis on piano. The after party begins at 10 p.m. with Swing Katts remixing retro music harkening to the Roaring 20s. So what attracted Young to host a speakeasy? “There was a great freedom back in the 20s, 30s and 40s,� Young said. “People were having fun, laughing and partying. When prohibition took place, it tried to squelch the fun, and fun just came out of the woodworks.� Young also admired the music of that time, including jazz and swing. “Of course, with the movie ‘The Great Gatsby’ coming out, people are focusing on that era again, and the music and the dancing is just so fun.� Young said she thinks this would be the first of many parties, depending on the public’s response. “It’s probably going to be the first of many collaborations between Tortilla Republic and Kauai Music Scene where we have theme parties.� Seating for this event is limited. or the past 30 years, Ono Family Restaurant has been a fixture in the Kauai community, serving patrons local-style dishes. Owner Kenny Ishii has been in the food-trade industry all his life. During his high school years, Ishii worked at the Yum Yum Tree in Kahala Mall. “I used to deliver pies,� Ishii said. “I used to go to Rubens by the mall and help the baker butter down all the fresh baked hamburger buns.� Before Ishii owned Ono Family Restaurant, he managed a restaurant in Los Angeles. After managing for a number years, Ishii decided to scout restaurants to purchase, but he had his doubts. He stood outside of one of those restaurants and thought, “What am I doing?� But as soon as he walked inside, his brain focused on every detail of the restaurant. “My mind turned on, like a computer,� Ishii said. “I scanned everything in sight and I knew then that this was the business for me.� Working with the community is With the Strawberry Sweet Bread French Toast, you have your choice of Portuguese sweet bread, wheat or very important to Ishii. twice a week.� Ishii admits that he pays a little bit more for Kauai produce, but says he wants to support the community by purchasing locally-sourced goods. “You got to help support the island,� Ishii said. “You need to support your community. Our business is only as healthy as the community we’re in.� The awesome thing about Ono Family Restaurant is how it incorporates its regular customers’ ideas into its menu. “Our restaurant preaches aloha to everybody,� Ishii said. “We have it in our food, too. Like Jerry Sanchez. We have a special that’s in his name because of something he has ordered. We have other stuff from other people.� Ishii and his wonderful crew prepared five items for TGIFR!DAY — Tropical Pancakes, Strawberry Sweet Bread French Toast, Portuguese Loco Moco, Ahi Benedict and Da Boss. The Tropical Pancakes consist of macadamia nuts, shredded coconuts and banana, topped with whipped cream and powdered sugar. It comes with hot, homemade coconut syrup and maple syrup. With the Strawberry Sweet Bread French Toast, you have your choice of Portuguese sweet bread, wheat or sourdough. It’s topped with strawberries, powdered sugar and whipped cream.

It comes with cheddar or pepper Jack cheese, tomatoes and hollandaise sauce. “We have our regular loco moco,� Ishii said, “but we just created the Portuguese Loco Moco.� The Portuguese Loco Moco consists of fried rice, Portuguese shredded pork and two over easy eggs. It comes with toast and a sunrise papaya. The Ahi Benedict is a grilled ahi placed on an English muffin. It comes with cheddar or pepper Jack cheese, tomatoes and hollandaise sauce. The last dish, Da Boss, can be served scrambled or as an omelet. “That was my breakfast every day,� Ishii said. “Other people saw it and asked, ‘What is he eating?’ So the workers decided to put it on the menu.� When you order it scrambled, Da Boss has avocado, mushrooms, cheddar or Jack cheese, plus your choice of meat. The shave ice stand has 80 different flavors — mango, sangria, plum and haupia are just some of the unique flavors to choose from. For TGIFR!DAY, Sullivan-Ishii created a rainbow-flavored variation, which consisted of blue vanilla, pineapple and strawberry. The rainbow shave ice is snow capped (drizzled with sweetened condensed milk) and powdered with li hing mui. It sells for $3.25.

Other ice cream flavors — chocolate, macadamia nut, Kona coffee, coconut and ube — are $1.50. If that wasn’t enough for you, you can add mochi balls, azuki beans, lychee fruit and pineapple crush. The first add-on is $1 and each additional add-on is $0.50. If you’re looking for sugar-free shave ice, the shave ice stand has eight flavors — blueberry, cherry, kiwi, peach, strawberry, vanilla, root beer and lemonade. There are also sour flavors: You have your choice of blue bubble gum, blue raspberry, cherry, cotton candy, grape, lemon, li hing mui, lime, lychee and pineapple. Other desserts to try out at the shave ice stand include ice cream, halo halo, acai bowl, acai bar and soft serve banana. With an abundant amount of combinations and choices to choose from, it’s no wonder why Ono Family Restaurant has some of the most onolicious shave ice on Kauai.

t’s one of the saving graces of “Pacific Rim,� Guillermo Del Toro’s new mega-budget monsters vs. robots extravaganza, that at a key juncture, it knows how to make fun of itself. This welcome bit of comic relief amid all the crunching, smashing and groaning in 3-D comes just as the good guys — that would be the robots, or rather the humans operating the 25story machines built to save humanity — have hit a snag. These massive, digitally controlled contraptions suddenly all fail at once. But then — eureka! — someone points out that one rusty old robot is analog. And so, in a movie that has spent some $200 million to boast the very best in state-of-the-art tradecraft, an analog machine saves the day, at least temporarily. Ha! Holy retro technology. It’s too bad that Del Toro’s film, a throwback to the Japanese Kaiju monster films made famous by “Godzilla,� didn’t have more such deft moments. Though it’s made by an obviously gifted director and will likely please devotees of the genre, it ultimately feels very short on character and heavy on noise, noise, noise. Did we mention the crunching, smashing and groaning? Happily, the plot is not convoluted (the script is by Travis Beacham and Del Toro) and there’s at least one really cool concept, called “The Drift.� No, this doesn’t involve land formations. It’s the mind-melding that occurs between the two pilots of each Jaeger — that’s what they call the mega-robots that humans have built to fight the monsters rising from the sea. Subjected to a pre-flight “neural handshake,� the pilots are suddenly sharing brains, the better to command their robot.

This leads to amusing dialogue, such as: “You know what I’m thinking?� Beat. “I’m in your brain!� That’s meant to be funny, but a later remark seems inadvertently so, when the hero balks at going back to battle: “I can’t have anyone in my head again!� The real action begins some seven years into the Kaiju offensive (and circa 2020.) The Jaeger program, once successful, is failing. Global defense authorities decide to drop it and go for a giant coastal wall. Didn’t they see “World War Z?� Ask Brad Pitt: Walls don’t keep out zombies, and they won’t keep Kaiju out, either. It’s back to the Jaegers. Enter jaded former pilot Raleigh Becket (a handsome but bland Charlie Hunnam). Raleigh lost his co-pilot and brother in a Jaeger fight, and is in no mind to share his er, mind again. But humanity’s at stake. His new co-pilot is a young Japanese woman named Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) with a serious beef against the Kaiju. Showy supporting parts are played by Idris Elba as the impressively named commander Stacker Pentecost; Charlie Day as a manic, nerdy scientist (not as funny as he could be); and Ron Perlman as a shadowy Kaiju-parts dealer. It takes a good hour for the real battle to get going. You’re glad when it does, but mostly, you wish the mind-melding concept had been mined more fully, especially since the scenes inside people’s minds show, too briefly, another, subtler side of Del Toro’s talents. One arresting flashback to Mako’s youth almost seems to come from a different movie — like his powerful 2006 “Pan’s Labyrinth.� Too bad Del Toro doesn’t share a bit more of that side of his moviemaking mind with us here.

he musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel is currently on stage at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse. Hawaii Children’s Theatre presents “Les Miserables,� the award-winning musical Thursdays through Saturdays until Aug. 4. The musical — being produced for the first time on Kauai — is led by Artistic Director Ed Eaton and Musical Director Morris Wise. Set in 19th century France, “Les Miserables� follows the life of Jean Valjean (Sean Evans), who is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment. He is seemed to be sentenced to a

life of poverty when a priest’s act of forgiveness sets him on course for a new life. Valjean breaks his parole and starts a new life, but he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert (Robert Carrasco). During the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary, Marius (Chris Alderete) who has captured the heart of Valjean’s adopted daughter, Cossette (Dakota Barnett). Other characters who come in and out of Valjean’s life include Fantine, the mother of Cossette

(Erin Gaines), Monsieur and Madame Thenardier (Bailey Hutton and Shandra Rego), and their daughter Epinine (Alexandria Taogoshi). Enjolras (Malachi Burrow), the leader of the student uprising, Gavroche (Jaden April) a street urchin and young Cossette (Anna Burkman) also have supporting roles. The cast is rounded out by an outstanding ensemble, all of whom play multiple characters: Corissa Berrett, Sara Burrow, Lana Coffman, Robin Erickson, Tiffany Fagerstedt, Matt Feeser, Kilinoe Garcia, Lolli Hagen, Kahana Heen, Morgan Liddell, Rebecca

Lindsey, Theresa Lindsey, Kyle McDonald, Meagan Mendoza, Sierra Mireles, Colten Moore, Billy Quebido, Tani Schmitz and Delia Valentin. This play is rated PG-13 for language and mature subject matter. he sound of Hawaiian music reverberated through the Kauai Beach Resort’s ballroom last week as this year’s Kauai Music Festival drew to a close. The 11th annual festival and four-day songwriter’s conference, organized by Kalaheo residents Jerry and Katherine Brocklehurst, capped off on Saturday night with several instrumental and vocal compositions from talented local performers throughout the state. The last day of the festival included performances from this year’s first, second and third place winners in the event’s annual four-day Songwriter’s Conference: LifeinPursuit members Chase Kauhane, Carl Kauhane and Ryan Higgins; Maelan Abran of Hilo; and Rich Webb. Saturday’s lineup also included several performances from several well-known Hawaiian music artists, including Keikilani Lindsey and his son Leo Lindsey; Grammy winner Charles Brotman; two-time Grammy nominee Raiatea Helm; and 12-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Kenneth Makuakane and Barry Flanagan. Kauai dancers from Halau Hula O Haliileo, under the direction of Kumu Hula Doric Yaris, also made a debut on Saturday night during one of the last two songs performed by Makuakane and Flanagan.
