with heart, hope and determination, “Matilda the Musical!” will enchant audiences, and is guaranteed to make magic on the stage, organizers said. “Matilda” is a full-scale Broadway musical production directed and choreographed by Carol Culver, who has been working with HCT for many years. She directed their recent productions of “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” This one promises to be lots of fun, with wonderful songs, lots of dancing, a live orchestra and exciting sets and special effects, Culver said. She is a long-time dance instructor on Kauai. She has Broadway chops, too, having been involved in the Broadway version of “Grease” as well as the film version. She is complemented by a team of seasoned theater professionals including Alan Van Zee (musical director), Dolly Kanekuni (vocal coach), Taj Gutierrez and Bailey Hutton (stage managers) and Debra Blachowiak (producer). The cast of “Matilda the Musical!” features 29 cast members. The very difficult role of Matilda Wormwood has been double-cast with Rain Barrett Verd and Karlie Goldberg. Matilda’s classmates will be played by Kayman Addison, Fia Gaines, Savannah Hubbard, Eva Light, Trinity Grace Muana, Simon Oyama, Travis Williamson and Abby Winters. The “Big Kids” are Kala‘e Abrams, Anastasia Gatlin, Leilani Goldberg, Amber Jardin, Jacob Lester, Margaret McLeod, Charles O’Neill, Eve Parker, Veda Parker and Echo Rohner. Erin Gaines and Taj Gutierrez have the roles of the teacher Miss Honey and Headmistress Trunchbull, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood are played by Larry Richardson and Sabryn Rudinoff. Rounding out
the cast in a variety of fun characters are Tawna Bensaid, Natalie Claytor, Isaac Dubey, Max Richardson and Ron Soderstrom. HCT’s hallmark is a diverse cast integrating both experienced and novice actors, with an educational production process where students and adults build valuable theatre skills in all aspects of production, while building confidence and a sense of teamwork along the way. The show is scheduled to perform over three weekends at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall from Nov. 15 through Dec. 1, with Friday and Saturday shows scheduled at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $15 adults, $12 seniors/students (children 3 and under are free). Advance tickets will be available for $12 at ticket outlets from and at the HCT website, hawaiichildrenstheatre.org. Ticket outlets are Times in Lihue, Kalaheo Cafe, Progressive Expressions/ Billabong in Koloa, Papayas in Kapaa, Healthy Hut in Kilauea, and Magic Dragon Toy and Art Supply in Princeville. Groups may contact the organization for discounted tickets (25 persons or more). Tickets from the cast are $10 apiece. The community is encouraged to support a special benefit matinee performance on Sunday, Nov. 17, for Kauai food banks, with $6 tickets from the cast and at the door along with a donation of food or money. Performances for schools are Tuesday and Thursday, Nov. 19 and 21. HCT’s productions are made possible through a broad range of community support and thousands of volunteer hours. Many opportunities remain to support the production in its final weeks of preparation. Those interested in more information about how to support “Matilda the Musical!” and HCT, including how to donate, set sponsorship, program advertising or volunteering, may contact HCT Administrator Erin Gaines at the HCT office, 246-8985, or via www.hawaiichildrenstheatre. org.-
FUNNY LADIES BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY
F
unny ladies will be at Trees Lounge tonight and Saturday. Promoter Erika Swartzkopf and her Female Comics of Hawaii will be performing 8 to 10 tonight and Saturday. Cover charge is $12. “I am excited to bring our Wahine Comedy Festival back to Kauai for another year,” Swartzkopf said. The festival will feature female comics from three different islands. Na Hoku 2017 best comedy album winner Brandi Morgan, a Navy veteran, headlines the lineup for this annual Morgan road show. Swartzkopf said her hope is to help grow the comedy scene on Kauai, which isn’t exactly known for being a barrel of laughs. “The thing is to bring comedy there, to inspire you all to create a scene like we have done on Oahu that last eight years,” she said. “I’m still beating the drums for Kauai people to start their scene. I’m not giving up.” This weekend’s shows will feature at least seven female comics, including Morgan, Patrice Scott, Corky Gardner, Annalissa Conception, Pam Escalona, “Blue” and Swartzkopf. She promises a side-splitting show from the comedians ranging in age from their 20s to 60s.
Wahine Comedy Festival coming to Trees Lounge
“All the people in the show are very diverse. They come from very different backgrounds,” Swartzkopf said. Comedians, she said, tend to make a lot of jokes about themselves. While it’s not what she called a “completely clean” show, there won’t be jokes at the expense of genders or race. “I would not allow that in my show,” Swartzkopf said. Good comedy finds that middle ground. “It has to have an edge to it to be really good.” She has hopes there are comedians on Kauai trying to break into the field who might see the Wahine Comedy Festival and be inspired to give it a go. She expects these two shows to sell out. “It’s so much fun. There’s no better crowds than Kauai crowds,” she said. “I’m not just saying that. That’s why I keep coming back there.” One of the things Swartzkopf loves about comedy is, in a sense, it opens lines of communication. She likes how genuine comedians can be — how they put themselves out there. “I like how sometimes you can talk about things that other people can’t. I like how true it is,” she said. The best part, though, is when a comedian gets hundreds of people laughing at the same time. “That’s powerful,” Swartzkopf said. “Super powerful.”

ree pumpkins at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College, Monster Rock, costume contests, trick-or-treating parades, and more filled the Kauai calendar on the weekend before Halloween. Starting with the Kauai United Way’s 47th annual Walk A Thon that attracted costumed characters from Cub Pack 148 and others, the day-long festivities continued at Kukui Grove Center, where costume contests for everyone filled the mall with characters of all nature. The costume contest was followed by the anticipated trick-or-treating parade, where the dressed-up characters were treated to goodies by center tenants. The Monsters of Rock greeted the nightfall that was livened by the tri-high dance coordinated by Divina Plowman of Kauai High School, and Student Activities Coordinators Harriett Watanabe (Kapaa) and Liko Perreira (Waimea) of the three Kauai public high schools.
