hen he was under the tutelage of the guitar. “When he used to teach me, he played Sonny Chillingworth, Makana said he didn’t realize how big of a star so fast. When he would teach me, he had to slow down and get frustrated because he the slack key guitar legend was. “I was so young. I was 13 when I started learning from Uncle Sonny. I just thought ‘let’s go to uncle’s house and jam,’” he said. Makana, born and raised on Oahu, started playing the ukulele when he was nine. Two years later, he picked up the art of Hawaiian slack key. One of Makana’s favorite memories of Chillingworth is learning how to pick up speed on

Most of these weren’t paying customers, but they were the kind co-owner Howard Warner was happy to have trying some of The Lanai’s food and drinks. “It’s invaluable for us to have events like this to get the word out, especially when you’re a new restaurant like we are,” he said. What was so important about this group was that it was comprised of concierges from resorts around the island. These are the folks who often get to know guests and tell them the best places to go and see. They arrange tours, make reservations and in general, point people where they’re probably going to spend money. On an island where tourism is key to the economy, the concierge is often the point person that businesses want to have a relationship with.

Concierge for a Night About 75 were at The Shops atKukuiula for the annual Concierge Night. They broke into groups and for more than four hours, toured shops, galleries and restaurants where they learned about products and services, tasted drinks and food, and met employees and business owners. They heard about good deals and got some, too. “This gives us an opportunity to learn what the Shops at Kukuiula has to offer so we can better advise our guests,” said Gloria Kennedy with the St. Regis Princeville Resort. The North Shore is about a 50-
mile drive from the South Shore, but many Kauai visitors make that trek. So people like Kennedy make it their job to know about the places they’re sending them. The Lanai served up two signature drinks, the Lanai Tai — a medley of rums, Ferrand dry curacao, Disaronno, Monkeypod jam, fresh lime and pineapple juice — and Just Landed — vodka, Disaronno, Calahua crem of coconut, pineapple juice and a handful of mint. Guests also sampled the Lanai burger, caramelized onion, brie and smoked ketchup and a few other dishes. Warner said The Lanai prepared
well for Concierge Night “These are the people we count on day to day to drive our business,” he said. The tour included stops at Eating House 1859 by Roy Yamaguch; Living Food Market, Cafe and Juice Bar; Merriman’s Fish House; The Dolphin Restaurant, Fish Market and Sushi Lounge; Savage Shrimp; Tortilla Republic; and Lappert’s Hawaii Gourmet Ice Cream, where they were treated to a Kauai Pie ice cream cone. Shrimp, calamari, beef, sushi, edamame and a tomato salad were several of the restaurant offerings.
The Shops at Kukuiula showcases restaurants, galleries, stores
Some of the shop stops included Blue Ginger, Crazy Shirts, Tommy Bahama, Scott Hanft Photography, Palms Gallery and Skyline Eco-Adventure. Melissa McFerrin, assistant real estate manager at The Shops, led one of the groups through the tour that ended with prize drawings and final chance to recap the evening and send each concierge home happy. “What’s great is, you all have some familiarity with the shopping center,” McFerrin said to the group. If there are things they don’t know about what’s there — the
services, the food and beverages, the products — “we want you to know them,” she said. The annual gathering is an opportunity to meet new people; also a chance to thank the concierge crowd for its support. Those are the people who can influence where guests go — and in turn, help a business grow. “We hope they spend one day, one evening with us,” McFerrin said.

and perpetuate the slack key guitar. “He entrusted me to legacy of music, and I felt this huge responsibly, he said. “I had music industry offers at the time, but I decided to turn everything down and dedicate myself to slack key. In his professional career, Makana has released eight records and a music video anthem called “Fire is Ours for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. He has also co-headlined a music festival with Nahko and Medicine for the People and scored the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau’s 2016 campaign. Makana, who has opened for Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello, will get a chance to honor his mentor on Kauai on Saturday. “His love for music and music styles was diverse. He loved Latin, R&B, Blues and Country, so the show isn’t going to be just Hawaiian music — it’s going to be all of the music he loved, Makana said. Makana and a host of Hawaii musicians will perform “A Tribute to Sonny Chillingworth at the community center at Kauai Christian Academy. Other performers include Nina Kealiiwahamana, George Kuo, Sashamon, Yoza,
Lono Kaumeheiwa, Lopaka Colon and Kirk Smart. “I wanted to take people through a journey of old Hawaii, all the way to today’s music, which you usually don’t get in one show, Makana said. Proceeds will go toward boosting teacher salaries at Kauai Christian Academy. “The people we end up hiring really want to be here and really invest in the kids, said Jimmy Johnson, president of the school board. “They’re not doing it for the money. The school, which teaches students from preschool to 12th grade, employs eight teachers. The benefit concert is a 5-year passion project, Johnson added. “I contacted many Hawaiian artists over the years, and nothing clicked. When I contacted Makana, it did, he said. “This is going to be quite a production, and he has gone all out to help us make sure it happens. For Makana, that means mixing it up and planning surprises. “A lot of the magic happens when it’s spontaneous, he said. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at makanamusic.com. Premium seating is $55 and general admission is $35.

IHUE — “They didn’t stop coming,” said Brenda Biehler of Showtime Characters who plied her balloon artistry Saturday during the Kukui Grove Center’s Spring Celebration. “I went through a lot of balloons.” The balloon artist was just one of the facets of the spring celebration which included the appearance of “Moana” of the Disney movie who surprised numerous people by appearing in the line of celebrants waiting on balloon creations. Crafts were being monitored by students of the Kauai Community College Early Education program under the supervision of Tina Fujimoto. The bristle of activity paused when EB (short for “Easter Bunny”) appeared to do several dance numbers with Moana celebrating the spring season.
