I

t’s that time of year to spread the holiday cheer and Ballet Kauai will be doing just that with an hour-long performance of a winter classic: The Nutcracker. The performance is scheduled 7 to 8 tonight at Island School. Ballet Kauai Director Daniel Nelson said the production is based on Act 2 of the ballet composed by famous Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa more than a century ago. This part of the ballet, he said, takes place in the dream of a young girl named Clara when she falls asleep. “Our production begins with her asleep, and waking to the dream world and being given a Nutcracker doll,” Nelson wrote in an email. “There are dances

from different places: the Spanish dance, Russian dance, Chinese dance, the Marzipan dance and Waltz of the Flowers. At the end Clara falls asleep again and wakes to find the fairytale world gone, but her Nutcracker doll is still there.” The performance, a new one for Ballet Kauai this year, marks the first time that Nelson and his students are performing on-stage at Island School. Last Christmas, Nelson said Ballet Kauai collaborated with a music teacher and had a night of strings music and dance at Kauai Community College. The Kapaa-based company, however, decided to do it’s own ballet show this year because the music teacher was unable to participate.

“Nutcracker is a Christmas classic that is done around the world in ballet companies and schools, but I am not aware of it being done here on Kauai,” Nelson wrote. “I danced it many times in my career as a professional dancer and I always loved it.” Nelson said his students have been rehearsing for this performance since the beginning of October. “I would love the audience that comes to take with them a sense of joy, being uplifted by the beauty of children dancing to gorgeous music,” Nelson said. ocated right on the beach path in Kapaa, the Beachwalk restaurant offers the best seats in the house. The phenomenal view of the green field of grass, palm trees and of course the beautiful ocean were a seller for me before I even tasted the food. Formerly Scotty’s, the place was renovated by new owners Donny and Tami Kimi. They moved from Hilo to Kauai on a semi-retirement plan with New Hope Church. The Kimi family has been in the restaurant/hospitality business for over 60 years. Donny

has been in the business for over 35 years, so when the opportunity came on Kauai to take over the property, he was on it. In June, Donny and Tami became the new managers of the establishment. After remodeling, The Beachwalk opened its doors in October. “We wanted to open a nice and affordable place for the locals to go. A family night out should be a more regular thing and it’s not for most because of the high prices of restaurants,” Donny, known by most as “Uncle Donny,” said.

Breakfast runs from $8 to $12, lunch $8 to $15 and dinner $11 to $30, with the most expensive item being a 14-ounce ribeye. Within two days, I had breakfast and lunch and must I say I was impressed. The Hanalei “Vege� Scramble, three eggs, onions, mushrooms, tomato, spinach, and your choice of cheese ($10.95) was delicious. My problem usually with omelets is the lack of ingredients and lucky for me this restaurant was not stingy on their veggies. The crunchy hash browns were the perfect addition to the mix. For lunch the next day I had the Seafood Panini, shrimp, crab, mushrooms, jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and wasabi aioli ($13.50). I am not a panini fan but I wanted to try something new and was glad I did. It was perfectly done — crispy on the inside as well as out, a rare combo in my experience. The seafood was cooked just right and the wasabi aioli gave it an additional richness to the favor. Besides the perfect location — second floor with ocean view, the renovation of the place has transformed its interior. Bamboo and laulau decorative touches on the railings; porcelain tile on the floor and huge wall paintings of the actual beach walk on the walls. The different levels of tables with the bar at the top gives everyone the best seat in

itting down at The Beachwalk, you can enjoy one of the best views in town. With the whale season here, I can understand why the place gets business regardless of the overall slow season. You can use one of their binoculars while waiting for your food and try your luck with catching a glimpse of the whales. “When the night is clear and the moon and/or the stars are out — this place is beautiful,� owner Donny Kimi said. I second that. The bar has fun specials. I tried the Kealia Breeze (vodka, gin, malibu, chambord, sweet and sour mix, pineapple juice, splash of Sprite, served on a tall glass on ice). This drink is on the sweet side with the chambord and pineapple juice to blame, but don’t be fooled — the mix of three liquors makes a delicious but potentially dangerous mix if you are a lightweight like me. On my next visit I will be sure to try a day at the Beachwalk (malibu,

n the 17 years since “Swingers,” Vince Vaughn has cultivated the comedic persona of an obnoxious and insensitive boor, so it may come as a surprise to learn that “Delivery Man” reveals a softer side entirely. As David Wozniak, the world’s most fertile sperm donor, the star plays someone who’s overwhelmed as opposed to merely overwhelming. It’s a welcome change, though a significant marketing challenge as well, considering DreamWorks has almost no way of letting audiences know that “Delivery Man” is virtually nothing like a Vince Vaughn movie, but rather a heartfelt celebration of the act of parenthood presented under radically exaggerated circumstances. Such sincerity comes easy for Canadian writer-director Ken Scott, who’s already told this story once before in the charming French-language hit “Starbuck.” Now, working in Hollywood, he demonstrates the good sense not to mess with success, engineering what amounts to a scene-for-scene remake of that earlier feel-good outing — with the notable addition of Chris Pratt in his funniest supporting performance yet. Transplanted from Montreal to Manhattan for the benefit of this new version, Wozniak drives a deli-meat truck, but even that task proves too much responsibility for his stunted abilities. Vaughn’s character may not be the sharpest blade in the family butchery, but he has a good soul, which comes through the instant he receives news that would send any normal man into panic mode. Nearly 20 years earlier, he donated dozens of times to a fertility clinic, which, through an administrative fluke, used his sperm to foster 533 children, 142 of whom are demanding to

know the identity of their biological father. More shocking for Wozniak is the revelation that his policewoman g.f. (Cobie Smulders) is pregnant, though neither revelation is particularly easy to process for a man who grows marijuana in his apartment and has more parking tickets than dollars to his name. Presented with a packet of information about his children, Wozniak draws one page at random and decides to pay the kid a visit, eavesdropping on a professional basketball game where his son scores the winning shot. For a split second, the film allows audiences to think that perhaps this sub-average shlub could be responsible for fathering 533 exceptional offspring: a mix of athletes, stars and world leaders. That’s the beauty of Scott’s script, which supplies precisely the emotional uplift moviegoers want, while still managing to surprise at every turn. The circumstances may be contrived, but the characters feel refreshingly genuine. “Delivery Man” skips over all the diaper changes and sleepless nights and gets to the essence of parenthood, when fathers must learn to put aside their preconceived expectations and accept their children for who they are. Life is well underway for most of them when Wozniak enters into the picture, and the movie celebrates the diversity of possibility, presenting him with offspring of all colors and personalities. The film’s biggest surprise comes at a perfectly conceived moment set at a conference that steers what could have settled for farce into far deeper territory. Where so many laffers rush to dismiss raw emotion with an ironic wink, Scott isn’t afraid to get sentimental.

irector Dennis McGraw and his students have tackled some long and challenging plays over the years, including Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.” But what’s up next may take the cake. The premiere performance of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” kicks off at 7 tonight at Children of the Land in Kapaa. McGraw said he is stressing to each of his nine cast members that they must “get every single word exactly as Wilde wrote it.” “There are no extra words,” he said. “You can’t add any and you can’t subtract any. It’s that good.” To prepare, McGraw has been running rehearsals “off-book” for three weeks. Usually, one is enough. “It’s a hard play,” McGraw said. Performances run Fridays through Sundays through Dec. 22. “The Importance of Being Earnest,” which debuted in 1895 in London, focuses on two wealthy young bachelors, both of whom pretend to be a fictitious man called Earnest in order to win over two eligible

young women, despite the ladies’ avowed preference for that name alone, according to a synopsis on Playbill Vault. It is a “trivial comedy for serious people.” McGraw said the play is “unbelievably witty,” and often considered the greatest comedy ever written. In fact, it is so “ridiculous and perfect,” according to McGraw, that he finds himself laughing just thinking about it. “It’s a ridiculous case of mistaken identities that goes in about 100 different directions brilliantly and then all culminates in the end,” he said. “It’s an unbelievable play.” Friday and Saturday performances of “The Importance of Earnest” begin at 7 p.m., while Sunday performances begin at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for students, and can be purchased from cast members or at the door. ussell Haluapo doesn’t remember how long he’s been doing the annual Keiki Toy Ride for motorcycle enthusiasts. Sunday, several hundred motorcycle riders and their friends braved a morning rain squall to bring toys for Kauai’s keiki who would otherwise not have any for the holidays. Joining the effort, representatives of Kauai’s seed companies, Dow Agrosciences, BASF, DuPont Pioneer, Syngenta Seeds, and Global Agricultural drove in more than two pallets of toys. “This is something the employees wanted to do,� said Laurie Yoshida of DuPont Pioneer. “The employees went out and bought the toys in addition to a little something the companies chipped in.� The two truckloads greeted the motorcycles rumbling in from the different parts of the island. “I thank Jesus for giving us the heart to help others,� Haluapo said. “’Merry Christmas!’ I say to you all; not ‘Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas!’ May the Love of Jesus Christ surround you and your ohana during this holiday season, and always.�
