ummer is in full swing, and July wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of music. The Kauai Music Festival returns in full form, and caps off a week of workshops with a pair of evening concerts at the Kauai Beach Resort this weekend. Like during previous festivals, tonight’s Poalima Concert features off-island artists, while Saturday’s Pau Hana Concert features homegrown favorites. Hawaiian singer/songwriter and Grammy Award winner John Cruz will be performing during tonight’s concert, alongside Haley Reinhart (third place finisher during season 10 of “American Idol�), Robert

Schwartzman of the band Rooney, David Pack of Ambrosia and Jeff Dayton. Cruz, who is also a KMF board member and has been involved with the festival since day one, has also spent this week teaching others the ins and outs of songwriting. “I do songwriting workshops, I do one-on-ones, and sometimes I help facilitate the open mics,� Cruz said during a phone interview Tuesday. “I can see in the attendees’ eyes and I can feel it in their hearts that they are really trying to answer these mysteries about songwriting, and if I can help in any way, I’m happy to, because when I was growing up, I wish I had more people I could call onto to ask questions and help me with things.�

The Kauai Music Festival Songwriter Conference is a four-day celebration of the art and craft of songwriting. What makes this conference unique is the fact organizers pair songwriters with industry leaders, who offer guidance and feedback. “What always happens during the festival is there are other people on the faculty that I want to sit in on their workshops, but I can’t because I’m busy conducting my own,� Cruz said, laughing. “Hopefully, this year I can experience a lot of staff members’ workshops. Over the years, we’ve had some fabulous people.� Those people have featured music industry leaders, including songwriters, record

company executives, producers and sound engineers. “We are all the way out here,� Cruz said. “To have these legendary people is amazing. You would never get these people together, and then have them listening to your song or co-write a song with them — it’s an amazing opportunity. Especially on Kauai. Even for a musician on Oahu, it’s a huge, huge experience.� What has kept Cruz excited about the festival is his personal mission to elevate the level of songwriting coming out of Hawaii. “That is partly why I have been so enthusiastic about the festival and remain a board

member,â€? Cruz said. “I totally believe that music in Hawaii will become better because of this festival.â€? Cruz will have a surprise for those who attend tonight’s concert — he will be performing new songs featured in his upcoming album, which is “closeâ€? to being finished. “I’ve been recording it in Nashville, Tenn.,â€? Cruz said. “It’s going to be a slight departure as far as the production goes, because this is the first time I’ve let the reins go, so to speak. ‌ At the same time, it still has the same blueprint. There are some songs that are

just acoustic guitar, there’s a Hawaiian song, there’s some slack key guitar on it, yet at the same time, there are a lot of new elements that I haven’t used before.� Treble steel guitar, lap steel guitar, keyboards, and an ukulele performance from a Russian instrumentalist are among those new elements. As for what Cruz will sample during tonight’s concert, we’ll have to wait and see. Saturday’s concert features Raiatea Helm, Meleuhane, Kenneth Makuakane and Charles Michael Brotman. was about in the 13th or 14th century. When it started, it was pre-Industrial Age, so everything was (made) by hand.� Shipley said the tradition of gelato from its inception has always been “the idea of making things fresh every day, making things by hand and minimizing the ingredients.� “Italian food is simple ingredients executed flawlessly and presented beautifully,� Shipley said. “That’s what we do with our gelato: we minimize the ingredients we use, it’s all natural, we have our own exclusive recipes, so everything we do, we do from scratch.� Shipley said a lack of air in gelato is what separates it from ice cream. Ice cream uses more cream than gelato. Because of that, its fat content is higher than gelato. “When air freezes, it turns to ice,� Shipley said. “With gelato, because we don’t put a lot of air in it, we don’t have to do a whole lot to keep it creamy (adding extra cream), so our fat content is lower than ice cream. Even though it’s not a low-fat food, compared it to ice cream, you’re going to see up to a 60 percent difference of fat.� The end result is a better flavor than ice cream, plus a silkier, denser and creamier texture. Sorbetto is another delight on the menu. Sorbetto (more commonly known as sorbet) is dairy free and fat free. “The flavors explode right on the palette,� Shipley said. “The menu really reflects Hawaii. We do POG, haupia, kulolo. We really try to make our menu be reflective of what you find here naturally in the tropics. We even do lychee, mango, lilikoi, pineapple li hing mui, star apple and jackfruits.� Papalani Gelato uses a lot of locally-sourced fruits and high-quality ingredients and keeps everything fresh. “We buy as much as we can as close to our store,� Shipley said, “We do a lot of

purchasing of fruits and nuts from the island. If there is an option to get ingredients from the island, we’ll do that 99 percent of the time. We go to farmers’ markets and we have relationships with a number of local farmers.� When you visit the store, you’ll notice all the items are from Hawaii. “We work with Nanea Chocolate Company, Kauai Chocolate Company, Hula Baby, Kauai Goodies and Kauai Nut Roasters,� Shipley said. “At our Anchor Cove location, we have a pastry case and all of our pastries are made by Passion Bakery.� Papalani Gelato, located t 2360 Kiahuna Plantation Road in Poipu, is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. W

hat a nice surprise: Gru is just as funny as a good guy. “Despicable Me 2� is, believe it or not, a romance-focused romp that has its share of villains. This time around, though, Gru is not among them. Gru (voice of Steve Carell) has changed his bad-guy ways. He’s now a family man, father to his three daughters, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Agnes (Elsie Fisher) and Edith (Dana Gaier). His laboratory, previously used to concoct evil schemes and formulas, is being used as a location for his Minions and Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand) to develop jam recipes. All is quiet and loving in the Gru household. That is, until a mysterious secret agent named Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) appears on the scene. She tries to sneak up on Gru, and then, although he knows she’s up to something, successfully stows him in her car and takes him to the high-tech secret headquarters of the Anti-Villain League.

Lucy’s boss is Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), who tells Gru he can help them with a problem: Someone has taken a toxic material that can turn passive creatures such as Gru’s own Minions into fanged killing machines. At first, Gru tells Silas (whom he refers to as “Sheepsbutt�) that he wants nothing to do with this assignment. But at last he agrees to accompany Lucy to a shopping mall to find out where the substance is hidden. At the mall, Gru makes a discovery that terrifies him: His oldest daughter, Margo, has eyes for a handsome boy who is the son of mall restaurant owner Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt). Now, Gru needs to track down the villain while he simultaneously keeps an eye on his daughter. And he gets no peace from an annoying acquaintance who wants to set him up on blind dates with every single woman she knows. I like the way the girls are growing up and the way they help Gru mature into someone who is brave enough to consider romance. All of the characters are every bit as likable this time around. Be sure to stay for the end credits, particularly if you’re seeing this in 3-D (and you should, because the effects are enjoyable). You’ll enjoy a group of Minions and their antics that will seem to come off the screen and directly at you.

or Kauai audiences, two weekends in May was not enough. “Miss Saigon,� the musical based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Madame Butterfly,� was reprised for a four-month run at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. The near sold-out show in May was a sign for producer Jason Blake to move forward. “We were probably not going to move forward, but we filled to capacity at KCC on the final Sunday night performance, and it was all local people,� Blake said. “We took that as a wink from the universe.�

The musical, which Blake describes as more like an opera, was created in part to give part-time work to the talented performers on Kauai. “Miss Saigon� is 100 percent professional, and employs an all-Kauai cast, Blake said. Everything, from the costumes to the set design, was done in a way to elevate and enrich the theater experience on Kauai. “There is a very high level of talent,� Blake said, noting that this is setting the ground work for other opportunities for Kauai’s theater professionals. The musical remains the

11th longest-running Broadway show of all time, which is why Blake knew this show was for Kauai. “Honestly, I really feel this chose me more than the other way around,� Blake said. “This one just kept nudging me.� Blake said he saw signs everywhere — “Les Miserables� was hitting theaters, and its creators also created “Miss Saigon�; the musical depicts a large Asian cast; and it’s a world-renowned show that has fallen off the national radar, creating an appetite for theatergoers. Also, its exploration of the dark

side of war and the country’s role on the international stage is relevant commentary to what is happening in the Middle East. The story is famous: It’s a tragic tale of a doomed romance between a Vietnamese woman and her American lover during the Vietnam War. For the Kauai run, Kauai High School graduate Juno Apalla stars as Kim, a 17-year-old orphan. Robert Carrasco, who has Broadway and national tour credits, plays the role of Chris, the American G.I. sergeant about to leave Saigon for America.

The show also features Stephen Pinzer in his debut as The Engineer, plus other seasoned Kauai’s performers, including Thom Newman, Dolly Kanekuni, Daphne Sanchez, Bud Soria and Leonda Clendenen. A portion of the profits will benefit disabled veterans on Kauai. “I’m a big believer of, if you live here on Kauai, there’s a demand for a certain type of giving back to ohana,� Blake said. “It makes something good out of a dark show, it’s the right thing to do. I believe in giving back.� The charity Blake chose

ith the island’s bon dance season one of the highlights of the weekend, residents and visitors continued this year’s festivities July 5 and 6 at the Koloa Jodo Mission. In all, an estimated several hundred people danced to traditional Japanese and Okinawan songs over the two-night cultural event and enjoyed ono local foods, including chili rice bowls, shave ice, makizushi, malasadas and baked manju. The event also included half-time performances on each night by Taiko Kauai on July 5 and Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Kauai on July 6. Last week was also the last bon dance event, where bon dance participants and visitors could view the “Buddhist Temples in Hawaii� traveling exhibit sponsored by the Japanese Cultural Society and authored by University of Hawaii professors George and Willa Tanabe. Visitors to the Koloa Jodo Mission’s annual bon dance were also greeted by a rare sight Saturday night near the temple’s entrance: a night-blooming cereus in full bloom. The next bon dance on Kauai is scheduled for today and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the West Kauai Hanapepe Hongwanji, located at 1-3860 Kamaulii Highway.
