usic, as some would say, runs in Dennis McGraw’s blood. His father was a singer. His sister, like his mother, was an accomplished pianist. And his brother, Michael McGraw, runs the Kansas City Boulevard Big Band. “It was definitely a musical environment, the Wisconsin native said of his upbringing. big band since he moved to Kauai in 1990. But all of that changed three months ago, when “a whole bunch of really good musicians moved here and many of the original Frank Sinatra arrangements became available for purchase. “It has been a pretty quick process — all of a sudden the stars have aligned, McGraw said. “I gathered up all of their e-mail addresses and said to them, ‘I’m starting another big band. Are you interested?’ and all of them were. On Saturday, McGraw and the 17 members of his band, the David Mc-

Graw Big Band, will make their debut performance at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair. Their tribute performance to Frank Sinatra, Jr., McGraw said, will include a few guest singers and 12 classic tunes created to remember a man who made a lasting impression on McGraw and other Kauai residents. Ol’ Blue Eyes, as it turns out, holds a special place in Kauai’s history. In April 1952, Sinatra made a few appearances in Honolulu and agreed to help a struggling promoter on Kauai by providing six performances at the Kauai County Fair.

The chairman of the board later returned to Kauai in April 1964 to film “None But the Brave, the only movie he ever directed, on Pilaa Beach. As a part of the commemoration to Sinatra, McGraw and other concert organizers are looking for Kauai residents who saw one of Sinatra’s performances at the Kauai County Fair in 1952. Mexican food restaurant thrives at Kukui Grove Center

L

a Bamba opened its doors for the first time on Rice Street in Lihue in 1996, offering mouth-watering Mexican dishes in generous portions. Five years later, the restaurant moved to Kukui Grove Center, where it continues to be one of Kauai’s favorite Mexican cuisine restaurants. “I am so thankful to all of our employees, customers and community for giving us an opportunity to share this awesome experience with all of you,â€? owner Ana Munoz said. Lihue resident Pearl Ajimine said she has been a customer since La Bamba used to operate out of Rice Street. “As always, the food was exceptional,â€? Ajimine said Monday after lunch at La Bamba. The restaurant’s vast menu has something for everyone. The nachos have a nice portion of chips covered with melted cheese, beans, tomatoes, olives, sour cream and guacamole. ÂĄAy caramba! Want more? nachos for added flavor. Munoz said the children love cheese quesadillas, which can also be served with chicken or shredded beef. Or, try the potato skins for an appetizer. If salad is what you want, La Bamba serves four different LÉO AZAMBUJA SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY kinds. You can have a simple green salad, a seafood salad or two types of taco salads. It’s the main dishes, however, where La Bamba really shines. Besides traditional burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas and tacos, they serve quite a few specialties. La Bamba has a Burrito Verde filled with tender pork smothered with freshly made green sauce and with a kick of spice and cheese. The Potato Burrito is something interestingly delicious. If you want more than the whole enchilada, you have to have an Enchilada Suiza — stuffed with chicken, covered with a rich creamy sauce and topped with melted cheese. The sizzling fajitas can leave anyone drooling — you have a choice of chicken, steak or seafood. But if you really want the best of three worlds, go for the combo, which includes everything. The fajitas can be served for two people, but make sure you’re willing to wait 25

ave you ever drank so much that you were seeing double at the end of the night? Well, Lechelle Hendershott (coolest name ever for a bartender) at 9th Island Sports Bar & Grill will have you seeing triple from the get-go. The “Triple Sun, an original drink created by Hendershott, is a sweet, wicked mix of banana liquor and vodka with a few more ingredients. Hendershott, originally from Pennsylvania, moved to Kauai three years ago. Before taking a bartender job at the recently opened 9th Island, she worked as an espresso barista for eight years, which

Still undecided? Ask for a combo plate, which includes two items. If there is any room left — and hopefully there is — order their homemade flan. La Bamba serves soft drinks, ice tea and beer. But, if you really want the real Mexican experience, have a margarita or a jarrito — a Mexican soda that comes in several flavors and in a really cool glass bottle. “I’m praying that we can continue to do business with you for many more years, God willing, Munoz said. The move from coffee to alcohol, however, has not diminished the young bartender’s enthusiasm level at all. “It’s a fun place, said Hendershott, showing a cheek-tocheek grin. “Come see us. 9th Island Sports Bar & Grill is at Kauai Village Shopping Center near Safeway Supermarket. ou hear nothing. You see nothing. You only serve. Such are the instructions Cecil Gaines receives as he embarks on his daunting new job at the Eisenhower White House in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler. But of course Gaines, played by Forest Whitaker in a moving, grounded performance that anchors the film and blunts its riskier excesses, hears and sees everything. And that means that over more than three decades on the job, he has a Forrest Gump-like view not only of the White House under seven presidents, but of the long arc of the civil rights struggle in 20th-century America. Much has been said about this movie’s potential future as an Oscar powerhouse. The speculation is natural — especially given its star-studded cast — but it takes away from the more important discussion of its simpler virtues, as an absorbing film that has the potential to teach a new generation (and remind an older one) about these crucial events. The story is inspired by a Washington Post profile of Eugene Allen, a White House butler from 1952 to 1986. Some anecdotes remain, but much is different. Most importantly, Daniels and screenwriter Danny Strong create a father-son dynamic between Gaines and a rebellious older son, Louis (a terrific David Oyelowo) that serves as a backdrop against which the civil rights struggle can play out — through the eyes of black characters, not white ones, for a refreshing change. This is done most strikingly in a key montage in which Cecil and his fellow White House workers set up an elegant state dinner, china and crystal and all, while down South, Louis

is protesting at a segregated lunch counter, leading to a harrowing confrontation. But the story begins in 1926, with the death of Cecil’s own father at the hands of the barbaric son of a landowner on a Georgia cotton farm. The elderly landowner (Vanessa Redgrave, beginning the celebrity cameo parade) takes Cecil into her home, where he first learns to be a butler — how to act, she tells him, like the room is empty even when he’s in it. Years later, working in a Washington, D.C. hotel, Cecil is noticed by a White House official, leading to a job there. His wife, Gloria, is immensely proud. Gloria, as you may have heard, is played by one Oprah Winfrey, and her performance is often restrained and quite moving. Not all the star performances are successful. When we first see Robin Williams as Eisenhower, his head bald, it almost feels like we’re about to witness a “Saturday Night Live skit. Williams doesn’t overdo it, but the casting choice seems forced. James Marsden, on the other hand, is a good choice as John F. Kennedy, with his handsome grin, boyish demeanor and Boston drawl. Liev Schreiber is amusing if a little broad as LBJ, and John Cusack is interesting as Richard Nixon, even though he looks nothing like him. Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda, making the most of her one scene, make a surprisingly satisfying Ronald and Nancy Reagan. But what makes the film work, finally, are the soft-spoken Whitaker, whose dignified portrayal rivals his Oscar-winning work in “The Last King of Scotland, and the powerful Oyelowo, whose Louis progresses over the years from determined and brave to angry and cynical, and ultimately to a seasoned older man.

omen in Theatre will hold auditions this weekend for its upcoming production of “Mayhem in the Mansions. “East and West come together in this evening of two classical one-act farces where physical theatre turns the world of masters and servants upside down, states a release for the production. Mayhem in the Mansions will include two plays: “Busu (or “Poisoned Sugar), a 14th century Japanese Kyogen, or comedy, and “Dolce Veleno (or “Sweet Venom), from 16th century Italian commedia dell’arte traditions. Director Dallas McCurley said both plays will run between 30 and 40 minutes and will be performed in English. “A lot of slapstick and traditional kind of movements, she said. McCurley is calling on actors age 16 and over and said most of the roles can be cast as male or female. “We just need people to come prepared to move, she said. “Every role in here is heavily

movement-based. McCurley is looking to fill seven roles with additional people needed for behindthe-scenes help. Performances will be the first three weekends in October. Those who are chosen for the roles will be rewarded with the rare opportunity to work with McCurley, a master of Kyogen and Commedia dell’arte theatre. “A retired professor of Asian Theatre, Queens College-City University of New York, Dallas is a multi-lingual published author, who has also taught theatre and dance on three continents, states the release. “Her inter cultural productions have been invited to European, Australian, Africa and Asian festivals. For Mayhem in the Mansions, McCurley will share her professional performing experience with commedia dell’arte troupes in Florence and Venice, Italy, as well as her years of training in nihon buyo and various traditional Japanese theatre forms with the University of Hawaii and

the National Theatre of Japan, the release stated. “It’s going to be very authentic, said Producer Melissa Mojo, adding that WIT plans to arrange something with the local and traveling Japanese community, since the production will coincide with the Kauai Japanese Cultural Society’s annual Matsuri Kauai festival. “We’re trying to really make this something that is crosscultural, she said. Group auditions will be help Saturday and Sunday

at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at WIT’s End in the Coconut MarketPlace in Kapaa. No prepared material is necessary and auditionees need to attend only one session. “We’re going to have fun with this production, McCurley said. ounds of laughter and applause filled Coconut Marketplace last weekend as the Kauai Shorts festival wound down at WIT’s End, the home of Women in Theatre. This year’s festival marked the fourth time the biennial event has been held on Kauai. In all, the Kauai Shorts festival featured 19 10-minute short plays that were created and performed by local directors and actors, who debuted their pieces on Aug. 9 and 10 at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. The eight winners selected by both the audience and judges over those two days showcased their performances for festival attendees from Aug. 16 to 18 at WIT’s End in Coconut MarketPlace. Judges awards were given to “The Faulkner/Hemmingway Letters, written by Bill Alewyn and directed by Nellie Foster; “The Obit, written by Mark Cornell and directed by Romey Curtis; “The Antichrist Cometh, written by David MacGregor and directed by Nellie Foster; and “The Slip, written by Mark Tjarks and directed by Mary MacDermott.
