olbie Caillat is coming to Kauai for a charity concert geared at raising funds to empower women. Proceeds will go to the Zonta Club of Hanalei Foundation, the local chapter of an international club dedicated to improving the status of women by supporting educational and charitable programs on Kauai and around the globe. “I love what they are a part of and how they are helping women, so I volunteered to perform,” said Caillat, a two-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter who is a familiar face on Kauai’s North Shore. “It’s going to be a lovely afternoon of music and food and bringing awareness.” “Colbie Caillat and Friends in Concert,” set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16 at Kauai Christian Academy in Kilauea, will also feature performances by Caillat’s fiance Justin Young, Anuhea and local band OCDC. Caillat will play an acoustic set accompanied by Young on guitar. Though the singer of hit songs “Bubbly” and “Realize” considers the Garden Isle her second home, the show marks only her third performance here. Previously, she has played benefit concerts on the island for Kauai Humane Society and Zonta Club. Zonta Club Treasurer Mindy Smith, who is Caillat’s hinai aunt, came up with
the idea for the event. Smith owns Bubba Burgers in Hanalei, where Caillat once spent a summer working the window. “I’m obsessed with Kauai,” Caillat said. “I love it. I’ve been going since I was 11 when my parents would take me to see Mindy. I love the lifestyle and how kind everyone is and how healthy and beautiful the lifestyle is. It’s so lovely over there. That’s my goal, to live there someday.” Caillat will spend about five days on the island. She said she plans to fill those days stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, going for beach walks and having family dinners. Caillat, who owns property on the island, said she is working toward building a house so she can split her time between Kauai and California. “I want to live both places,” she said. Tickets to “Colbie Caillat and Friends in Concert” are $45 and must be purchased in advance at zontaclubofhanalei.com. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

bout three years ago, the formal living room in the 16,000-square-foot three-bedroom mansion that once belonged to Gaylord Parke Wilcox became Mahiko Lounge — an old-time, cozy bar that takes you back to the olden days of Kauai. “Someone said we needed a bar,” said General Manager Eric Hanson. Mahiko Lounge is part of Kilohana’s Plantation Estate, which includes Gaylord’s Restaurant, Koloa Rum Company and Kauai Plantation Railway, which takes guests on a 40-minute train ride around the plantation. It is served with steamed white rice, enoki mushrooms, daikon sprouts, bell peppers, lemongrass butter and kabayaki sauce, he said. Both items are guest favorites and Hanson said he is always receiving compliments about not just
how they taste but also on their presentation and their “wow-factor.” “Definitely Instagrammable,” Hanson said. But Hanson said he doesn’t want to only serve guests great food. “I’m an old-school guy. A restaurant can have the greatest food in the world, but if it doesn’t have good service, it’s not good,” Hanson said. “When I got here, Yelp reviews weren’t the greatest,”
he admitted. But he’s been making strides in how his restaurant is seen to the outside world. “The staff is the greatest,” Hanson said, “My top five girls and guys bring something unique to the table.” Mahiko Lounge is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The lounge features a happy hour from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with $5 menu items.

3 decades with the captain BUDDHISM’S
Kapena celebrates 30 years; original members to play Kauai show
T
he three founding members of one of Hawaii’s most popular and enduring island music groups are banding together for one last tour. Kapena, whose spirited, reggae-inspired sound was born 30 years ago, will play a show for all ages at 5 p.m. Oct. 16 at Poipu Athletic Club. When Kelly “Kelly Boy” De Lima and brothers Teimomi “Timo” and Tivaini “Tiva” Tatofi take to the stage next week, Kauai residents will have a rare opportunity to witness the pioneers of island reggae, or what has become known as Jawaiian music. It is a sound that is both infectious and iconic. In addition to Jawaiian, the group has flirted with country, pop, gospel, Tongan, Samoan, Tahitian and Fijian styles of music.
BRITTANY LYTE TGIFR!DAY The Kapena brothers.
Kapena is the Hawaiian word for “captain.” Kelly Boy, Timo and Tiva honed their unique style in 1986 with their first recorded album, “Satisfaction Guaranteed.” The group has since recorded more than 20 CDs, though its membership has evolved over time. In the early 2000s, Kelly Boy introduced what would be the new generation of Kapena — a band made up of his three children:

Kapena, Kalena and Lilo. The upcoming “One Last Hana Hou” tour, part of a “Revive the Live” concert, offers Kapena fans a rare opportunity to see the group’s original members perform live in an era when the next generation is taking over. “In a nutshell, we’re going to be doing a lot of our old Kapena classics,” De Lima said. “This whole concert is about reuniting. It’s a celebration of our
30 years. So we have our kids opening up doing the newer stuff that Kapena has been coming up with the last five or 10 years and then it’s the original members doing the classics. We’re going to have a mixed bag of old stuff, new stuff, a little bit of everything.” Kapena’s One Last Hana Hou tour also includes shows at the War Memorial Event Lawn on Maui on Saturday and Uncle Robert’s Awa Bar on the Big Island on Friday, Oct. 23. A limited-edition Kapena 30th anniversary CD, “Kapena 30,” will be available for purchase at the shows. The Garden Isle, he said, holds a special place in the group members’ hearts. Tickets are $25 at eventbrite.com, or $30 at the door.

HEART AND SOUL
CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
T
his week’s review is to all “born-Buddhists/ people-who-subscribe-themselves-as-Buddhists/wannabe-Buddhists/ people-who-think-Buddhism-is-cool.” For many people, when the term Buddhism is heard they generally think of peacefulness. But how much do you know about it? Sure, you might already know that Buddha isn’t a god, but what is the Wheel of Dharma or the Eightfold Path? Even if you have only a passing curiosity about Buddhism or are already a practicing Buddhist, Nobel Peace Prize-nominated author Thich Nhat Hanh (a Vietnamese Buddhist monk), has written one of the most accessible books to what this Eastern religion/philosophy (Buddhism) is all about. “The Heart of Buddha’s Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation” simply reveals the core tenants of Buddhism, and how, even after 2,500 years, they still apply to our daily life and experiences. Each chapter covers one of the fundamentals of Buddhist thought, such as the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Three
Doors of Liberation, the Seven Factors of Awakening, etc. Thich Nhat Hanh has a wonderful way of reducing these concepts into a way that is easy-to-grasp and feels completely applicable to our lives today. How many of us seek a moment of peacefulness amid the craziness of our lives or wonder how to seek solace when something in our life is causing us grief? If Buddhist monks have used these teachings to help them feel only compassion and forgiveness in the worst of circumstances, then imagine how it could be used to help better your current state-of-mind with your boss, kids, wife, husband, inlaws, neighbors, etc. Best of all, whether you are devoutly religious (to any religion), an atheist, or simply agnostic, these time-tested teachings can be good “Golden Rules” for all human beings. ••• ED AND CYNTHIA JUSTUS ARE THE OWNERS OF THE BOOKSTORE IN HANAPEPE.

oconuts everywhere! The virtues of the versatile fruit were celebrated at the 19th annual Coconut Festival over two days at the Kapaa Beach Park. Kap Teo Tafiti, one of the event headliners, said coconuts are used for everything from roofs on houses to mats. Tafiti has been educating people on the virtues of coconuts, which have become iconic of images of paradise, working his magic to create a spark of flame in the depths of a hollowed out hau before transferring it to the husk of a coconut where it blos-
somed into flame, igniting his fire knives. The versatile plant was further extolled through crafters, musical entertainers, chef demonstrations, cooking contests, and a pie-eating contest. Topping the tribute, patrons were treated to a “nowhere else in the state” collectible event shirt. The event was presented by the Kapaa Business Association with the help of the County of Kauai, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Kaiser Permanente, The Garden Island newspaper and hundreds of volunteers from the community.
