fter losing their performance space, the Women in Theatre had to get creative. The group had a space at Coconut MarketPlace, but had to vacate a few years ago. “We’re basically nomads,” said Nellie Foster, WIT president. “It’s hard to have a season with no space, so we’ve been trying different ways to get events going.” Over the last two years, the group hosted dinner theaters at the Hukilau Lanai restaurant and plays “Kauai Shorts,” at Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.

Your guide to the afterlife
E
ver wondered what other religions might be like? Are you a searcher? Perhaps you may be a little disappointed with your religion of birth? “The Savvy Convert’s Guide to Choosing a Religion” could be just the book you have been looking for! In reality most of us put more thought into the cars we buy than the gods we worship. And gosh, where do you start? Well, this innovative (humorous) guide could help you identify the best religion for you! “Savvy” takes us through 99 religions, each with their own
devoted (or casually-devoted) followers, their own deities, codes for living, and so on. This is a very real book set up in a very fun way. Each page provides a summary for each religion, including CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS “perks and drawbacks”, SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY activities and paraphernalia, conversion difficulty, time commitment, overall cost (because, let’s face it, some have a budget to plan around), the number of new friends, purpose of life, deities, key texts, geography, and (most importantly)… afterlife promises! A few examples: JUDAISM: Perk, eight nights of Hanukkah presents! Drawback, lobster and bacon not kosher (bum-
mer!); CATHOLICISM: Perk, drinking OK! Drawback, soul racking guilt!; SUFISM: Perk, amazing music and poetry! Drawback, whirling may cause dizziness! “Savvy” also includes a questionnaire for searchers as well as one for converts. It even has easy-to-follow pull-out quick guides and a bonus chart of each religion’s symbol! Not interested in religion at all? No problem! You’re not alone. Did you know that nearly a sixth of America’s population is not affiliated with any particular religion whatsoever? So, whether one is committed, or searching for a religion that fits your values, or are merely curious to what else is out there, this book is a wonderful glimpse of 99 of some of the world’s most popular religions out there! See you at the bookstore! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are the owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

MUSIC FESTIVAL AND FASHION, TOO
Makana to take stage Monday
T
his is a leap year and the E Kanikapila Kakou Hawaiian music program is full of surprise leaps. In week six of the 10-week program, the surprise is a double-header of fashion and music. On Monday, EKK’s guest artist will appear at 7 p.m. on the main stage. It’s Makana, the former kid prodigy who learned slack key at the knee of his late mentor, Sonny Chillingworth. He’s still honoring his slack key roots, but Photo contributed by Makana you may also have seen his Makana will be the guest artist at the E Kanikapila Kakou Hawaiian music program on Monday video-gone-viral “Fire is Ours,” at the Kauai Beach Resort.

followed by his interview on FOX TV about it, and seen him perform other contemporary compositions along with always honoring his slack-key roots. Makana is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, composer and activist who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change. His guitar playing has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award winning film “The Descendants.” He has released eight records. Before Makana takes the stage at the Kauai Beach Resort, there will be a fundraising fashion show with the theme “Harajuku: Tokyo Street Fashion.” This decades-old movement, begun near the Harajuku train station, has evolved into “The Fashion District” of Tokyo.
About 20 or so artists and fashion lovers have cooked up costumes and will model them starting at 6 p.m., all for a good cause. Be sure to bring a bunch of single dollar bills if you’d like to bid on these ab-fab costumes for the benefit of the Garden Island Arts Council that for the past 33 seasons has gifted the island with its EKK program. A suggested donation of $5 to $10 in the calabash gives entry to this backyard-jam style of fashion, music, hula and talk-story — set in a ballroom. There will be a food concession and no-host bar. Next Monday at EKK: It’s Community Hula Night. Everyone dreams of dancing the hula at some point in life. Leap Year Day, Monday, February 29, is your chance to do it as the Malie Foundation artists hana hou the Community Hula night.

riday was a special day for Mary Vales. It was the annual Seniors’ Valentine’s Day party at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall and at the height of dancing to music provided by Natural Harmony, Russell Wellington of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department announced that it was Vales’ 97th birthday. “This is one of Na Kupuna Council’s highlights of the year,” said Melanie Okamoto of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department. “The seniors love to dance and
party, and rather than a DJ, we treated them with live music by Natural Harmony who provides them with music they love to dance to.” One of the day’s features included the maracas contest where the different senior centers got together to create the kachi-kachi style instruments using items they could find anywhere. “They love to see their pictures,” Okamoto said. “We even created a special photo booth where they can get pictures dressed up in their Valentine’s outfits.”
