SEALED WITH A KISS
Musical group has helped people get over stage fright
E
ven though Melissa Mojo loves to sing, she suffered from stage fright. So, in 2012, she started Kauai Island Singers Showcase, which brings singers across the island together from all walks of life and stages in their musical journey. “Basically the whole purpose was to get over stage fright. I realized I wouldn’t get over it if I don’t perform on a regular basis,” she said. “I started it so I can work on stage fright by putting on performances every couple months.” When the group started, there were more performers than audience members. “It was pretty basic, we just had a piano,” Mojo said. But humble beginnings grew into 10, 15 and then 20 musicians playing the saxophone, bass to drums. About 100 people attend the concerts, some planning their vacations around KISS’s

schedule. The group tries to put on six concerts a year at All Saints Episcopal Church. “It’s a really nice space, they and have a good sound system,” Mojo said. Originally, KISS performed
in the Women in Theatre building at the Coconut MarketPlace. But the center closed about two years ago, leaving the group homeless.

ALL THAT JAZZ
L
ady Ipo Kahaunaele will bring her ukulele to the Red Clay Jazz Festival on Aug 6 — just in case there will be an impromptu kanikapila after she and several local musicians perform at the annual jazz event at Courtyard Marriott. “We like to kanikapila all the time. My music is influenced by jazz,” said
Kauaunaele, who will be emceeing at the 8th annual event and also performing. “We want to showcase how Hawaiian musicians can adapt to have jazz added to their style. It’s influenced my style of singing Hawaiian music.” The event kicks off on Aug. 3-5 with free jam sessions, followed by the main concerts on Aug. 6. “Three nights in a row are jazz jam sessions by some of the artists that we have here for festival,” said Margy Parker, media relations with the Red Clay Festival. “Over the last few years, the whole
Red Clay festival unites some of island’s best musicians rhythm and blues have been introduced into the jazz festival.” On Saturday, a Jazz Kanikapila of local artists, which includes Hawaiian musicians Lady Ipo, Sabra Kauka and Cindy Combs, will sing standard jazz numbers at the Courtyard Marriott in Kapaa. The three ladies will be joined by musicians Kirk Smart on guitar, Tony Rodarte on drums, and Daryl Miyasoto on bass. The concert on Saturday will also feature Pete Escovedo Jazz Ensemble. “The event has started to incorporate some Hawaiian
and R&B into the jazz offerings and also Latin jazz,” Parker said. “It’s becoming a cornucopia of music related to jazz, but also not strictly jazz.” Sabra Kauka, a kumu of Hawaiian Studies and hula halau Na Pua o Kamaile at Island School, said she’s never sang jazz before, but is looking forward to having fun.

ME TARZAN, YOU READ CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

aaaaahYeeaaaahAaaaaaaahYeeAhYeeAhYeeAaaaaaaaaah!” Tarzan! The mostly naked, vine swinging, yodeling, muscle guy is still one of the best-known literary characters in the world! For over a century, the Tarzan stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs have been enter-
taining millions of readers as well as movie-goers and TV watchers the world over. The “Tarzan” stories can surely be considered true classics, beyond just the science-fiction and fantasy genre. Beginning with “Tarzan of the Apes,” published in 1912, we meet Tarzan as the infant Lord John Clayton orphaned in the wilds of Africa, and is adopted and raised by primates. It is in this first book of the series we learn how Lord John becomes Tarzan, a man who defies all the conventions of what was (and still is) considered to be the hallmarks of civilization. This origin story of Tarzan also introduces us to his first

encounter with humans, seeing the humans killing his jungle kin and his decision to avenge the death. However, it is his meeting the unforgettable Jane and his soon-to-be friend D’Arnot that forever alters his destiny. Tarzan symbolizes the essence of every man … the primal male that is forever being forced to fit into the mores of daily social culture
and relationships to what is regarded as normal and surviving it to the best of his abilities. His following 23 adventures take him to places all over the planet (and sometime inside it!), where he encounters foes both familiar and exotic. Of course, being written so long ago, some of the content challenges some of today’s cultural standards and yet the same arguments have been made of the classic works of Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, or even the Nancy Drew/ Hardy Boys series. With such wild excitement, you really can’t go wrong! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.
So, Hank Curtis, director of music at All Saints, who also works with KISS members, asked Ryan Newman, pastor of All Saints, if the group could use the church as their home. “We’re fortunate to have Ryan Newman,” Mojo said. “He’s so supportive and a really great guy.” KISS performances, which take on a different theme for each show, are also ways for singers to develop their skills and expand their repertoire, she said, a way to spread their wings and yes, fly. “A few KISS singers have graduated to singing professionally,” she said. “One example is Dhyana Dunville, who started with KISS from the first concert. She now sings in local venues with her own four-piece band, the Dhyana Quartet.” Mike Kobayashi, a KISS regular, also sings regularly with The Starlighters and the Kauai Community College Jazz Band. KISS will be performing on July 30. This month’s theme is “Feeling Good,” and will feature 10 singers. Curtis will be playing the piano and Laine Griffith will be on the saxophone, clarinet and flute. It is free. Thanks to KISS, Mojo no longer suffers from stage fright. “I still get nervous, but I’m much more relaxed,” she said. Info: m2mojo@m2mojo.com
