auai Rising will host a concert and rally Saturday in support of a charter amendment petition that seeks to regulate pesticides and genetically modified organisms on the island. “I’ve been a longtime supporter of the movement to regulate agrochemical operations in Hawaii, said Hawaiian musician Makana, who will perform and serve as emcee. “I often donate my time and my music to causes involving that. The free event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue. Makana will be joined by musical guests Sashamon, Liko Martin and the Sacred Earth Choir. Speakers at the event will include professional surfer Dustin Barca, Hawaiian rights activist Walter Ritte, Kauai County Councilman Gary Hooser, Dr. Lorrin Pang and Don Heacock. Michael Shooltz of Kauai Ris-
ing, the nonprofit behind the proposed charter amendment, said the evening will be full of terrific music and informative speeches, meant to serve as a kick off for the citizens’ initiative as well as a thank you to the people who have put in time and effort. “We want it to be kind of a celebration as well as having the support of the community to get the charter amendment on the ballot, he said. Those behind the measure, including Shooltz, say it is the next step beyond Ordinance
960, a new county law governing pesticide use and GMOs, which is slated to go into effect in August. To get the charter amendment on the Nov. 4 ballot, Kauai Rising must collect 2,037 signatures — 5 percent of the county’s registered voters — by May 21. Makana said the event will be both fun and informative, and hopes to bring concerned community members together. “I really love the people and the aina over there, he said of Kauai. “Even though I don’t live there I feel it’s my kuleana to participate — use my music and my voice to let people know they have options and choices, and to inform and inspire them. ‘The Other Woman’ has zip but little else
n its surface, “The Other Woman is a very welcome thing: A movie starring talented, funny women with their own punch lines and everything. In the movies, this is bizarrely rare. But what do the stars in “The Other Woman — Cameron Diaz
and Leslie Mann, along with a side of model-turned-actress Kate Upton — do the whole movie? Gab about a guy. “The Other Woman is a slick hell-hath-no-fury comedy of female revenge, peppered with cheap and unimaginative toilet humor, but it’s elevated

somewhat by the fine comic duo of Diaz and Mann. Its simple concept — the banding together of a wife (Mann) and two of her husband’s unwitting mistresses — is dispiritingly sitcom-y, and its womanly uprising is a farce of female empowerment predicated
on the characters’ shallow lives revolving around a man. But it’s also light and snappy thanks largely to the chemistry between Mann and Diaz. As far as glossy, formulaic comedies with questionable gender politics go, you could do a lot worse.

We enter the story through Diaz’s character, Carly, a highpowered, high heels-wearing Manhattan attorney used to making men her prey. Yet her feelings are surprisingly strong for her latest fling, Mark King, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of “Game of Thrones, again playing a Prince Charming on the outside, cad on the inside. When she turns up to surprise him at his Connecticut home dressed as a sexy plumber, she’s aghast when his wife, Kate (Mann), answers the door. Kate soon enough realizes what’s going on and turns up, with her Great Dane in tow, at Carly’s office (where Nicki Minaj makes excellent use of her few minutes as Carly’s assistant). Mann’s jilted wife isn’t out to get Carly but needs a friend outside of her circle. A reluctant Carly eventually yields to Kate’s desperate persistence. They make a funny pair: one the polished, cool attorney, the other a frazzled, ditzy emotional mess. Kate is slow on the uptake: “Does this mean he’s not training for the marathon? she wonders.
She feels an “all-American rage bubbling up, and the two conspire to stealthily deliver Mark his comeuppance. They hit it off over drinks, giving Mann a chance to reprise her excellent, barfing drunk from “The 40-Year-Old Virgin. If “The Other Woman, which was directed by Nick Cassavetes (“The Notebook) from a script by Melissa Stack, were wittier, their schemes would be more creative than spiking Mark’s shampoo with nail polish remover or his drink with something that will make him run for the bathroom. (“Bridesmaids was far more creative in such a scene, with Maya Rudolph surrendering like a sad swan in a heap of wedding dress in the middle of the street.) When Upton, as Mark’s latest conquest, joins the group, she mostly just plays the part of eye candy, jogging in a bikini in slow-motion. She fits in without disturbing Mann and Diaz’s rhythm of physical comedy and pratfalls. Frankly impressed by Upton’s looks, Kate is happy to have her bring up “the group average.

t’s the first time the four legendary guitarists will perform together on Kauai. Not that they don’t know about the island. Quite the opposite. “This will be our first concert ever in Kauai and we are very excited about it,” said Tinsley Ellis, one of the four musicians highlighting the 12th annual Hawaii Rhythm & Blues Mele 2014 — A Blues, Roots and Jazz Festival. “I did some shows in Hawaii back in 1997 and thought the reception for Blues Rock was great. I’m so very excited to be in the company of the other three guitarists on the bill, who I consider to be legendary guitar masters.”
Elvin Bishop, Duke Robillard and Little Charlie Baty will accompany Ellis on stage at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kauai Beach Resort. Ellis isn’t alone in his praise for his fellow musicians. Bishop recorded with legends Mike Bloomfield, Clifton Chenier, John Lee Hooker and The Allman Brothers, according to a promotional announcement, while Robillard has earned accolades from The Houston Post, The New York Times and legendary guitarist B.B. King. Baty’s career has landed him praise from Guitar World Magazine and The Village Voice publications, among others, and Ellis was featured at Blues at
The Crossroads II venue. Songs off the new album From far left: Little Charlie Baty, Duke Robillard, Elvin Bishop and Tinsley Ellis. Midnight Blue will be played along with songs from Ellis’ 20plus year history on Alligator Records. Doors open for the show at 5:30 p.m. in the Jasmine Ballroom. Tickets cost $45 for general admission and $65 for gold circle table seating. The show, the first on Kauai Tuesday to Sunday - 9:00am to 5:00pm for the performers, should be Closed Monday a hit, Ellis said. “The best part of playing on stage is seeing the happy faces on the audience,” Ellis said. “And I especially enjoy playing in exotic new places like Kauai.” Info: (808) 896-4845.

‘A Few Good Men’ comes to Kauai
T
hose are big shoes to fill. Jarhett Gaines will be taking on the 1992 Tom Cruise movie role this weekend during the Kauai Community Players production of “A Few Good Men.” The stage play, a Broadway hit, was written by Aaron Sorkin (of “West Wing” TV and “Moneyball” film fame) at age 28. He received the coveted John Gassner Award as Outstanding New American Playwright for the play version. “The play is very similar to the movie,” said play director Dennis McGraw. “It’s a fast-moving show. There’s the courtroom, an office, the Brigg, a hotel room, lots of changes, more than 50. Instead of constant black-outs that would kill the moment, we leave actors on stage in between the changes.”
A last-minute cast adjustment one week before the opening put McGraw into the show himself as Capt. Mathew Markinson. His dual role as director and now actor had him scrambling to learn the two long speeches by for the captain serving at a military base where goings-on are in question. McGraw is one of 15 men in the show in addition to one woman (played by Brooke Morgan), playing the role of a Navy lawyer. She encourages Gaines’ character, Lt. Daniel Kaffee, fresh out of law school, to uncover and defend the truth in a case revolving around the death of a Marine at Guantanamo Bay. “The character is real rich,” said Gaines. “He is afraid to go all the way for fear he won’t live up to his father’s success.” Gaines believes the lawyer role
is the best male part written in over 20 years and was excited to be cast to play it. “I’m really stepping out of my comfort zone,” Gaines said. “Especially since I’m not sarcastic in my real life like this guy is.” Hoping the character’s negative traits don’t rub off on him outside the theater, Gaines said he has stayed away from watching the film version of the story, wanting to make the role his own. The play opens Friday at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse, 4411 Kikowaena St. and runs for three weekends, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $15 opening weekend. Tickets purchased at the door have a $2 surcharge. Info: (800) 838-3006.
