a good time for me to catch up as well as learn the new dance for this year.” Bon dance practice is offered by the different churches to allow people an opportunity to learn the different bon dances in order to participate in the festivities.

T

he West Kauai Hongwanji Hanapepe Temple will be the site of the first bon dance of the Kauai Buddhist Council Bon Dance schedule. The public is invited to the bon dances, which takes place tonight and Saturday from 7:30 p.m. ending about 10 p.m. In addition to the bon dance, there will be food and games. Bon, a shortened version of Obon, is a Buddhist observance which originally was observed in Mahayana Buddhist countries, including China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. The observance was brought to Hawaii by the Japanese people who were brought in to labor on the plantations, and due to the colorful and festive nature of the observance, was assimilated into the Hawaiian lifestyle. This Hawaiian style celebration has resulted in the Buddhist churches relying on its bon celebration as a fundraiser for its annual operations, offering the public a number of food choices, games, and other activities. Bon dances take place each week, with the exception of the July 4th weekend, at different member temples of the Kauai Buddhist Council. Following the final bon dance at the Koloa Jodo Mission

29th annual Taste of Hawaii features traditional, local and unique dishes

APAA — Yes, Taste of Hawaii is about food, drink and music. It’s also a cultural experience. Kim Brun, sous-chef at Lava Lava, will be at Taste of Hawaii looking to provide something new. “We’re going to do different styles of cooking this year and incorporate different techniques and culture. Some Hawaiian-infused, some oriental fusion and Asian flavor to give people something different that they can get here instead of traveling to different islands and places,” Brun said. “My whole thing is to get people to experience culture by tasting food and everything that we can give them.” Taste of Hawaii is scheduled 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Smith’s Tropical Paradise and is operated by the Rotary Club of Kapaa and volunteers. It is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Lava Lava will be just one of 34 different food vendors, each providing traditional, local and unique dishes. Brun said Lava Lava and the other vendors feature locally grown products.

“We want to show people on Kauai what we’re all about,” she said. “A lot of people came to us at Taste of Hawaii last year for something different and our business definitely started picking up after that.” Chef Lee Hayden of Olympic Cafe in Kapaa sees Taste of Hawaii as a showcase of some of Kauai’s finest chefs, as well as some chefs who come from other islands. “We participate every year. It’s a lot of fun and it’s great to see the other chefs from other islands and this island to get together,” Hayden said. “It’s a good fundraiser for the rotary club, they do a lot of great things.” Taste of Hawaii tickets are $100 and will rise to $125 at the gate. Admission grants unlimited beer, wine and endless varieties of food. “There’s a good mix of everything. All of the chefs bring their A game,” Hayden said. “The theme is like a Sunday brunch, but a lot of chefs will bring dishes that represent them and their restaurants. Signature dishes, signature cocktails and drinks, things like that.” Among the dozens of signature dishes

IN THE NAME OF RAIN

CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

Hanau Ka Ua - Hawaiian Rain Names”, by Collette Leimomi Akana with Kiele Gonzalez and illustrated by Sig Zane, is truly a remarkable publication. Come to think of it, we have

not ever really seen a book like it! While many of us may think of rain as a few different varieties and strengths, the Hawaiians had hundreds of ways to describe the types of rains. Yep. You read that right. Hundreds! In fact, according to the authors, there may have been at one time thousands of names for each variety. Stunning, considering there aren’t that many types of clouds for the rain to come from! With meticulous research, Collette Akana has compiled an im-

pressive index of every historical mention or ancient chant that was ever used to describe the various rains at the numerous areas on every island. To make our enjoyment of learning easier, “Hanau Ka Ua” has arranged the information alphabetically by each of the individual names the Hawaiians had given. First, we are treated to the original quoted source, whether it be in English or Hawaiian; if it is Hawaiian, the translation in English is below, and following it is a brief commentary about the

specific rain. Bound in a quality cloth hardcover including an elegantly stylish dust jacket, this is sure to be a volume that will be long-cherished by many, not only for its unique exploration of a seldom-discussed topic, but for the wealth of research that obviously went into it. To make it even lovelier, each alphabetical chapter separation is preceded by a lovely botanical illustration on opaque paper of varying color, adding to the book’s inherent beauty. We’ve sold numerous copies at our bookstore and we’ve been enjoying their satisfied smiles watching them feel as if they

have just found a treasure! Enjoy! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

movie review

‘Wonder Woman’ film, star live up to the name

“W

onder Woman “ has been the subject of so much superfluous fuss, it’d be easy to forget that behind all of the hand-wringing and both symbolic and real pressure to succeed there’s actually a movie meant to

entertain. Yet, like the heroine at its center, “Wonder Woman” the movie rises with powerful grace above the noise. It’s not perfect, but it’s often good, sometimes great and exceptionally re-watchable. Director Patty Jenkins’

film is so threaded with sincerity and goodness it’s a wonder how it got past the pugnacious minds responsible for what’s come before. “Wonder Woman” evokes not only the spirit of Richard Donner’s “Superman,” but also Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” while still being its own thing. Just look to the image of Gal Gadot confidently striding out alone onto an unwinnable battlefield with only a shield, a sword and a mission — and prevailing. It’s enough to give you goosebumps. “Wonder Woman” is structured as a coming-of-

age story about how Diana, the Amazonian princess, becomes Wonder Woman. It’s framed, clumsily, as an over two hour flashback provoked by a note from Bruce Wayne. Of all the stupid interconnected universe things! Thankfully, Jenkins transitions quickly into the actual story about a naive idealist who comes to accept the complexities of mankind. From a tender age, Diana, living on the achingly idyllic island of Themyscira, dreams of being a warrior. Her mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) disapproves, although she

inexplicably withholds the real reason. It’s no wonder Diana aspires to fight. She’s been told that their sole purpose is to keep the peace and destroy Ares, the god of war. Also, and not insignificantly, the warriors led by General Antiope (Robin Wright), are some of the fiercest babes ever to grace the screen. They fly around with swords and shields, bedecked in armored mini dresses and wedged gladiator sandals that allow them to leap 50 feet in the air. Young Diana trains in secret, and then with reluctant permission, until an American spy, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), crash lands on the island and tells the Amazons about the “war to end all wars.” Diana concludes World War I must be Ares’ doing and decides, impetuously and like so many arrogant superheroes before her, that she’s ready for battle. In London and at the battlefront, Diana gets a crash course in humanity, from the ills (sexism, alcoholism, colonialism, racism, apathy) to

the good (babies, snow, ice cream). It’s all very simplistic, but Gadot’s serious and unapologetic curiosity sells the dubious premise that a woman so versed in so many things from Socrates to the “pleasures of the flesh” could be this unaware of human flaws. Perhaps they only teach the good stuff in Themyscira. But that’s what Trevor is there for — to help this otherworldly crusader acclimate. Gadot is the perfect Wonder Woman — a true blue hero who’s as believable in her bafflement of women’s fashions and social mores as she is dead-lifting a tank and swatting away machine gun fire with only her arm cuff. I never cared about Wonder Woman before. Now I do. “Wonder Woman,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content.” Running time: 141 minutes. Three stars out of four. ••• Associated Press
