Laser Light Train Night!
All aboard Grove Farm’s ‘Tren del Amor’
F
ebruary is often considered the month of love and since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, Grove Farm wishes to celebrate such a special occasion with “Tren Del Amor on Friday. “It’s a great family event, said Chris Link, owner of Link’s DJ Production which is setting up the event. “We do this laser light show to let people know about Grove Farm. We’re trying to make it nice and safe for the community and the kids to ride. All the little kids ride the train and learn the history of Grove Farm. Festivities run 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. featuring train ride on Hawaii’s oldest locomotive “Paulo, also known as “The Train of Love. The event will also feature a laser light show, music, live entertainment and food booths.
“It was a dream of Ms. Maple Wilcox to restore the train so the people of Kauai can see what the trains are like, said Johnson. “It’s the only place on Hawaii where original trains are running on the same railways by the company that ran them when they were hauling sugar cane. Music and multicolored lights will envelope the train and track as it travels across the old employee parking lot on Holeka Road across from the old sugar mill. The trees surrounding the train will also be wrapped in lights for guests to enjoy. During the last festival on Jan, 4, over 600 people enjoyed the festivities and 800 train rides were given. This year, organizers are expecting over 1,000 people for the celebration. Guests are welcome to enjoy the rain rides as many
times as they wish. The free event is open to the public, however donations for Grove Farm will also be accepted. “We have donation bottles all around and donations will go to the train,â€? Link said. “We use proceeds to make the train better and get the tracks down.â€? DJ Production features this train ride once a month in agreement with Grove Farm. It has been working with Scott Johnson, stream engine operator for Grove Farm, to make the celebration a success. “It’s an awesome opportunity. It actually started as a way to make it up to the community for the Halloween train night (which was rained out),â€? said Johnson. “The whole point of it is to show people the history that Grove Farm has been preserving for Kauai and the world.â€? Â

REVIEW ASSOCIATED PRESS JOCELYN NOVECK
Cumberbatch shines as wartime codebreaker
‘T
is clearly the season for Oscar-worthy performances by British actors playing mathematical geniuses facing daunting personal odds. Sound overly specific? Consider: A few weeks ago we had “The Theory of Everything,” starring Eddie Redmayne as the brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking. And now we have Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Imitation Game” as Alan Turing, the man chiefly responsible for cracking the vaunted Enigma code used by the Germans in World War II. But even though Turing literally changed the course of history — Winston Churchill said he’d made the greatest single contribution to the Allied
victory — and, by the way, ALSO created one of the first modern computers, you may well have never heard of him. That would be reason enough to applaud the arrival of “The Imitation Game,” directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Graham Moore based on a 1983 book by Andrew Hodges. But though it often feels like your basic high-brow British biopic, the film also happens to boast impeccable acting, especially by Cumberbatch, who masterfully captures the jittery, nervy brilliance of a man whose mind could bring down an enemy yet couldn’t process simple human interactions. Was Turing autistic, or did he have Asperger’s
syndrome? Who knows — today we’d probably say he was “on the spectrum.” He’s a man who can’t coherently answer whether he wants a sandwich for lunch. At the same time, he’s conceiving a machine that will somehow defeat the Germans’ own cipher machine, the Enigma, which uses code that changes every 24 hours, rendering traditional decrypting methods useless. As we learn about this painful duality in Turing’s life, we also learn he was gay, in an era when homosexual activity was criminalized in Britain. After the war, he was prosecuted for indecency. Given a choice of “chemical castration” or prison, he chose the former. He committed
suicide at 41, a cyanide-laced apple by his bedside. Oddly, though, the film addresses Turing’s death only with a quick line in the postscript, and no word on the method. It’s a strange omission — particularly given that Turing was said to have been fascinated by the “Snow White” story. We begin after the war, with the police investigating a mysterious break-in at Turing’s home and wondering what this fellow’s about (they don’t yet know about his role in the war). Soon we flash back to 1939, and younger Turing’s job interview with the commander running the secret codebreaking program (a nicely crusty Charles Dance). Given Tur-
ing’s dreadful personal skills, it doesn’t go well. But he’s hired, and immediately starts alienating his colleagues, especially the charismatic Hugh Alexander (Matthew Goode, excellent and also perhaps the best-looking mathematician ever portrayed onscreen). (Well, at least until Keira Knightley makes her entrance in this film.) Turing is ridiculed for insisting on building his machine, taking up time and money while soldiers are dying. Denied funding, he makes a direct plea to Churchill, who puts him in charge. That’s when he hires Joan Clarke (an appealing Knightley), the only woman on the team and his eventual fiancee. Still, things go badly,
until an offhand remark by a woman in a bar makes Turing realize a way to speed up the machine’s activity. Eureka! The story gets more interesting as the team realizes it must keep its huge breakthrough a secret, lest the Nazis figure it out and change their code. They enter into a painful calculus: Which information can be used, and hence which lives saved? There are surely numerous narrative shortcuts taken here. There’s also one of those slogan-type lines that seems far too tongue-trippingly clunky to be uttered by one character, let alone two: “Sometimes it’s the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine.”

Harlem Quartet takes KCC stage Wednesday
T
he Kauai Concert Association is gearing up to welcome the Grammy Award-winning Harlem Quartet to the Garden Isle. “We’re excited to have them,” said Jason Blake, KCA’s president. And the group is equally as enthusiastic about coming, according to founding member and violinist Melissa White. “This will be the Hawaiian debut for Harlem Quartet,” she wrote in a text message while boarding a plane in Michigan on Tuesday. White said Wednesday’s performance will be a combination of standard classical and jazz repertoire. “The audience can expect an exciting show that’s personal and spontaneous,” she wrote. Formed in 2006, the New York-based ensemble has performed throughout the U.S., as well as in France, the U.K., Belgium, Panama, Canada and in South Africa.
“They have never played Kauai and they worked with us for KCA to be able to afford it, for which we are grateful,” Blake said. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center in Puhi and is the first of five shows around the islands. The band will also be conducting educational outreach earlier in the day with a presentation and performance at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. Jim Bray, KCA’s vice president, described the quartet as “top-notch” and said Wednesday’s program will include everything from classical composers Franz Joseph Haydn and Alexander Borodin to Wynton Marsalis, Billy Strayhorn and Chick Corea. The Harlem Quartet, according to its website, “advances diversity in classical music while engaging new

audiences with varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers.” The versatile ensemble has performed with such distinguished performers as
Itzhak Perlman, Ida Kavafian, and Paquito D’Rivera. And their most recent recording, “Hot House,” with jazz master Corea and percussionist Gary Burton, was a
2013 multi-Grammy Award winner. Members of the Harlem Quartet are White; violinist Ilmar Gavilan, a native of Havana, Cuba; violist Jaime
Amador, a native of Puerto Rico; and American cellist Matthew Zalkind. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for students. Info: kauai-concert.org.
Watch whales, support Hawaii Children’s Theatre Fundraiser set for Sunday
A
whale watch/snorkel tour benefit for Hawaii Children’s Theatre is set for 9 a.m. Sunday with Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures. The trimaran boat will leave from Port Allen in Eleele for a four-hour sail. It offers a terrific opportunity to view humpback whales, enjoy the majestic scenery, hang out with friends and best of all, support HCT,
the folks who brought you “The Wizard of Oz,” “Avenue Q” and “Shrek the Musical” in 2014. Tickets are an $80 donation and support their scholarship funds. Food, drinks and hopefully lots of whale sightings will be provided. Only 49 tickets are being sold for the whale watch tour and they are going fast. Debra Blachowiak, HCT secretary, said the tour is an important fundraiser so the theater can continue its efforts “to enrich the lives of
young people, their families, and the community by addressing their unique needs through live theatre, formal education in the performing arts and high quality entertainment.” “So we have performing arts education for Kauai youth and we also have outstanding productions for the Kauai community,” she said. The funds raised with this whale watch tour are for tuition assistance for Summer Stars in June, the Ethan Shell Scholarship and other programs.
“We cannot run our organization with just tickets sales or we would have to triple our ticket prices and then no one could afford to come and see the plays,” she said. “This particular fundraiser is such a fun time and since the boat is donated, all participants can write off their entire ticket price.” Anyone planning to attend is asked to check in at least a half hour early. For tickets, Call Blachowiak, 639-2437 or go to www. hawaiichildrenstheatre.com

Mojo said with a laugh. “We have quite a few people who come to every concert, and I’m just really appreciative, so this is a way for us to show our appreciation and love for our audience. Ten KISS singers will perform 20 songs, including “Let’s Fall in Love by Ella Fitzgerald, “Star Dust by Nat King Cole, “The Man I Love by Ella Fitzgerald, “Love Me Like a River Does by Melody Gardot, “Killing Me Softly by The Fugees and “All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor. The free event will feature Mojo, Erik Hagen, Mike Kobayashi, Diana Leone, Barbara Pendragon, Dhyana Dunville, S. Kamal Salibi, Trishana Star, Fran Nestel, and Karen Tilley. Hank Curtis on the grand piano and Laine Griffith on saxophone, flute and clarinet will provide the instrumental accompaniments to each song. In advance of the post-Valentine’s Day concert, the KISS singers, along with Curtis and Griffith, will also perform 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at The Mahiko Lounge at Gaylord’s Restaurant (Kilohana Plantation) in Lihue. “It’s kind of an experience for the singers to feel out what it’s like to do lounge singing, Mojo said. “That’s the whole thing about KISS — we’re always trying to create new experience for the singers so we can get used to being in the spotlight. Info: Mojo, 822-0545
