Rising ‘Stars’

I

saac Dubey, 11, is back for the fourth straight year. So is 12-year-old Sabryn Rudinoff. Both enjoy the stage — and even the spotlight — that comes with singing and acting with the Hawaii Children’s Theatre. â€œI love it,â€? Dubey said. “It gives me a very good opportunity to shine in any way possible.â€? Same goes for Rudinoff. â€œI love all the people and how you get to be yourself,â€? she said. “If you feel like a fool, that’s how you know you’re doing it right. Get out there, sing, dance, give it your all.â€? Nearly 100 youth ages 8-13 are involved in morning and afternoon sessions at HCT’s long-running and wildly popular Summer Stars five-week program at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse. The morning sessions focus on workshops and developing specific skills such as singing, acting and dancing, and includes a new workshop each week.Â

HCT readies youth in five weeks to perform ‘Alice in Wonderland’Â

at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. For some, it’s their introduction to the world of theater. For others, like Dubey and Rudinoff, it’s another summer on stage. Either way, those training for Alice will get their chance before a crowd and even learn about costumes, makeup and props. â€œThey get the whole nine yards when it comes to putting on a theater production,â€? Blachowiak said.Â

And they do it in a short window, which can be challenging, Hanson said, so that’s where HCT’s strong staff and supportive board play key roles. â€œWithout this structure, we wouldn’t be able to do it,â€? she said. There are nearly 50 kids in the morning session, which costs $375, and nearly 50 more in the afternoon program, which costs $395. About 50 are registered for both.Â

Summer Stars, which began in the 1990s, has a strong following because of its impact on youth, Blachowiak said. She said there are numerous stories about a reserved, shy child blooming with HCT. â€œIt’s amazing what happens to kids when they perform on stage,â€? she said. Hanson agreed. â€œYou give them that encouragement and that

On a recent afternoon Bierma traced the lineage of the recipes on the menu — all family trade secrets — as he lifted the hood on one of the restaurant’s namesake barrels to reveal a dozen crisp, perfectly browned quarter chickens spinning in the smoker. â€œWe say it’s off the hook barbecue because we literally cook our meats on hooks in the barrels,â€? Bierma said with a smile. This is authentic barbecue cooking — a 2- to 3-hour process — and it’s what makes Chicken in a Barrel’s meats so good, Bierma said. The meats are smoked with charcoal and a local kiawe wood that enhances the flavor. â€œJust seeing the faces of the people who eat our meats who love barbecue makes all the hard work worth it,â€? he said. “People who know good barbecue love us because we do it right.â€? The no-frills, fami-

ly-owned restaurant is the Chicken in a Barrel brand’s second location. The first location opened in Kapaa six years ago. The open-air Hanalei restaurant has been smoking chicken, ribs, pork, beef and local buffalo in barrels for half as long. The chicken and rib plate — a quarter piece of chicken and two baby back ribs for $15.55 — is by far the most popular menu item. There are also Kauai beef burgers, tacos, burritos and delectable sides like the homemade chili beans.

Prices range from $5.95 for a classic Kauai beef hamburger to $16.50 for a half rack of baby back ribs. There’s a kids menu, with staples like grilled cheese, as well as two kinds of salads. The meat rubs and barbecue sauce offerings are all homemade and sold by the bottle at the restaurant’s Hanalei and Kapaa locations. Soon, the company hopes to sell them in local stores as well. Though Chicken in a Barrel is a Kauai-born and based business, the company has

big plans. Bierma, a former construction worker, said he and his family are looking to expand on Oahu, plus add a second Kapaa location and new eatery in Poipu. “We have so many people that want to franchise our brand in Costa Rica, Japan, California, Oregon — all over the place,” he said. “For now we’re looking at expanding nationally, and first here in the state.” The Hanalei spot is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and until 3 p.m. on Sunday. They just need the chance to bring out what’s inside. “They love to dress up in costumes,” she said. “It’s fun for them.” “The keiki on this island are truly magical,” Hanson said. “Here at Summer Stars each student gets their chance to shine, and working on Alice in Wonderland, JR. is a dream come true for me, watching the keiki grow and learn.” Bailey Hutton, morning program director, said the weekly workshops this summer are covering video and camera, puppetry, makeup, special effects, and vocal technique. It’s been “fantastic,” he said. Theater gives youth confidence to be themselves.
