25 YEARS OF LAUGHS
H
omelessness. Family drama. Caitlyn Jenner. Comedian Augie T covers these themes and more in his latest stand-up routine, offering a “local boy perspective” on the absurdities of everyday life. And on Friday, Nov. 6, he’s bringing it to Kauai. Augie will perform brand new comedy alongside fan favorites at an 8 p.m. show at the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach in Waipouli. Tickets, available at Kmart in Lihue or online at augiet. com, are $20 for general admission and $35 for VIP, which includes a DVD and a 7:30 p.m. meet-and-greet with Augie. The show is part of “Augie T Live,” a tour celebrating Augie’s 25 years doing comedy. “I love performing,” Augie said. “I knew I wanted to do comedy ever since I was in the fourth grade. I knew that I wanted to make people laugh at a very young age, and even after doing this for 25 years it’s still fresh. I still get the same excitement when I see a line for a show or I see people paying money to come and hear me talk about the stupidity in my life.” Augie, who has a radio show every morning on Surf 95.9 FM, is a two-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award recipient and was recognized as one of Hawaii’s Top 100 Influential Filipinos. Now, perhaps more than ever, he said it’s important that people carve out time in their lives to laugh. “We live in such a politically correct world, we don’t

know how to laugh at each other anymore because we’re afraid we’re going to offend somebody,” he said. All the more reason to attend a comedy show. In this age of easy-access entertainment, Augie said live comedy offers people a chance to not only to sit face-to-face with the performers, but also to participate in the performance. “We live in such a technological world, you can lay on your back and put your iPad on your stomach and watch comedy and be in your own world,” Augie said. “But it’s not like being in a dark room where it’s right there in front of you. Coming to a live show is pretty exciting. I think it’s so freeing.” When Augie first started stand-up in the early ‘90s, he wanted to be “the Eddie Murphy of Hawaii” — pro-
fanities included. That is until his father came to one of his shows and was angered to hear the filthy language coming from his son’s mouth. Today, Augie takes pride in keeping it appropriate. However, he’s not afraid to take it to the edge. “People know what to expect,” he said. “They know I can be edgy but I never use the F word. They can bring their families. They can bring the kids there.” So far, this decorated comedian said the island of Kauai has embraced him, and he looks forward to coming every time he visits from his home in Ewa Beach on Oahu. “I’m really being healed by speaking out about my life and then laughing and making you laugh about it, too,” Augie said.

NOT ANOTHER MEXICAN RESTAURANT
D
on’t call Island Taco a Mexican restaurant. Sure, if you eat here, you might enjoy some delicious Mexican elements such as homemade salsa, tortillas, and ranchero sauces, but that’s about it. “Our slogan is local flavors in a homemade tortilla,” said restaurant manager, Taylor Nichols. “The owner gets furious when they consider us a Mexican restaurant.” Island Taco — a casual open-air experience in Waimea — fuses a wide selection of island favorites such as kalua pork, Teri chicken, poki together with other types of cuisines, namely Mexican.
MICHELLE IRACHETA TGIFR!DAY “We’re pretty eclectic. We’re pretty ma and pa,” she said. “We don’t care if people walk in without their shirt on or their slippers.” The restaurant, which serves about 100 to 200 people each day, has been open for five years and its owner, Kirk Marois, said it’s about time to open numero dos. The new Island Taco restaurant opens this November in Poipu. “It’s in a better realm for people to try it,” he said. “Down there, (I can) introduce the idea to a lot

would find, but we put it in a tortilla,” Nichols said. “We just make a taco out of it.” Tacos, burritos and chimichangas come with a shell, cheese, rice and the customer’s choice of protein sautéed with cabbage. Island Taco also serves quesadillas — tortilla, cheese and meat. “We keep the fryer pretty clean, so the chimichangas come out piping hot,” Nichols said. “I hate when you get a soggy chimi. Our chimis are actually crispy and hot. Same with the taco shells for the salads.” No animal fats are used to make any products including the shells and all the other homemade ingredients, Nichols said. “You can be vegan and come here and get something to eat,” she said. That was the concept

behind opening the restaurant in the first place. “I can feed anybody,” Marois said. One of their more popular items is the seared wasabi ahi chimichanga, which starts at $17. The cabbage is sautéed in oil, the ahi is seared and wrapped in the homemade tortilla. Some white rice is added and a
bit of cheese and then it’s fried just enough to hold in all the juiciness, Nichols said. “I know we’re a little out of the way, but if you’re pulling up to the canyon, it’s worth a stop,” Nichols said. The Waimea location is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HONORING THE KING
K
ing Kaumuali‘i is one of Kauai’s most beloved rulers, and from 5 to 10 p.m. Nov. 7 a luau will be hosted at Smith Tropical Gardens as a fundraiser for a life-sized, bronze statue of the King. “We still have Great Kamehameha Day, but we don’t acknowledge the king that shared this island from bloodshed,” said Aletha Kaohi, president of Friends of King Kaumuali‘i, the nonprofit sponsoring the event. King Kaumuali’i, who was the last independent ruler of Kauai, reigned from 1794-1810 and eventually surrendered his kingdom to avoid more bloodshed of his people. “They had assembled an overwhelming force against him and out of grave concern for his people, he conceded his island,” Kaohi said. The theme for the luau is ‘A’ohe hana nui ke alu’ia, which means “no task is too big when done together by all.” “We’re calling the whole island of Kauai to do this together,” Kaohi said.
The luau will include a silent auction, no-host bar, silent auction, live entertainment, hula, and the unveiling of a three-foot high bronze model of the statue. “Normally they destroy the model, but we had it bronzed and it’s back here,” Kaohi said. “The statue will be on exhibit when people walk in as the official greeter.” Kaohi said the group was inspired to create a life-size statue of the King to honor his legacy and the image for the statue was taken from a photo of Kaumuali’i. “It’s going to symbolize the sacrifice of giving up his kingdom,” Kaohi said. “It’s long overdue and it is meant to bring hope to all.” Tickets are $65 at the door for adults and for children ages 5-11, the cost is $40. Adult tickets can be purchased ahead of time for $60, and are available at Banana Patch Studio in Kilauea, Aloha Spice Company in Hanapepe, and at the Waimea Visitor Center.
