‘My home crowd’
The slack key virtuoso will play pieces from his new album, “Music You Heard Tonight,” which includes material he’s performed while on tour around the state. “It’s both my classics of my
traditional and contemporary Hawaiian slack key music and then there’s some new, actual Hawaiian material I’ve composed and reworked some traditional songs,” he said. “I do a very select few
covers of some folk rock from the 60s and have some new originals as well.” Born Matthew Swalinkavich on Oahu, the 38-yearold musician got his name, See MAKANA, Page 6

or slack-key guitarist Makana, Hawaiian music is a metaphor that is reflective of the Aloha State’s culture. “We have a living, breathing, evolving art form. … We have so many people in our culture that are mixed ethnicity. The music represents our identity,” he said. “When I sing and kani Hawaiian music, I’m keeping alive that essence.” Makana will make his way to The Garden Isle on Oct. 14 at Waimea Theater and on Oct. 15 at Tahiti Nui. “I never forget when I was first starting my career how much support the people of Kauai gave me,” he said. “It was night and day from everywhere else. It was with ALDEN ALAYVILLA open arms and they really got my TGIFR!DAY Photo by Shane Drew art. Anytime I play over there, I just feel like it’s my home crowd.” Makana is coming to Tahiti Nui Saturday.

Words to travel the world
CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
A
loha explorers, book lovers and map lovers! Some books take a lifetime to write. “Atlas Maior of 1665” was quite literally one of them, as it was originally pioneered by Willem Blaeu in 1606 and completed posthumously by his son, Joan Blaeu, in 1665. At the time, it was considered to be one of the most expensive books in the world. The first time we saw this incredible book was in the old Princeville Hotel lounge. It was by far the most exciting compilation of maps we had ever seen. We sought one for ourselves and found it to be out of print! Fortunately, the high-quality publisher Taschen has
reprinted this masterpiece! While today we enjoy the benefits of precision mapping via satellites, there is something truly beautiful and awe-inspiring in looking at the meticulously hand-crafted works of art that

were used to give people their sense of place in the world. With hundreds of pages of beautifully colored maps, detailed with every mountain, church, village and city, this atlas is a delight to peruse, each page a thrill to behold! Included with each of the 592 maps are captions explaining the relevance and context of each one. Additionally, University of Amsterdam’s historical cartographer (and assistant Professor of Human Geography) Peter van der Krogt provides us with an excellent preface that explains the origins, history and influence of the “Atlas Maior” upon the world. This newest hardcover reproduction includes a slipcover which looks identical to the cover of the book, but also has a unique feature where the slipcover converts in to a book stand! This way you can display “Atlas Maior” as an instant conversation starter on your coffee table or office! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

Makana Continued from Page 3
Makana, from his high school Hawaiian language teacher. “She gave me the name Makana Akua, which means gift from the source or gift from God,” he said. He shortened his name to Makana during the making of his first album when he was 18. “It means a gift given freely,” he said. “I never signed any big deals. I did it with the help of my community, of my friends, and on my own because I wanted to maintain that artistic freedom.” Since starting his career singing in the Honolulu Boy Choir when he was seven, Makana has since performed Hawaiian slack key all over the world in venues such as Paris, Australia, Holland and across the United States. Before every show, Makana explains what ki ho‘alu (Hawaiian slack key) is. “By demonstrating what slack key is — how it works, how the tuning works, how the picking hand works — immediately there’s this deepened appreciation and they can enjoy the show more,” he said. Makana, who first picked up his first guitar when he

was eight or nine, started to learn Hawaiian slack key when he was about 10. For the past six years, the Oahu native has been composing most of his songs on piano. “I’m going into a stage of my career where I’m going to focus on the songs — not the playing,” he said. “I’m going to produce those songs, put together a band, get back up singers, instrumentation and really focus on not just solo guitar, but focus on putting together a new sound and putting out my songs.” Another project the Hawaiian slack key guitarist is working on involves bringing the community together. “What I’m working on is an all-star, community-inclusive record of Hawaiian music — very old and very new — woven together with a lot of the top musicians in Hawaii,” he said. “The themes of the songs on this Hawaiian album are going to be a lot of the aloha aina scenes that have been coming up in the past five years.” Makana will perform at Waimea Theater tonight. Doors open 7; show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $20. Saturday, Makana will have two showings at Tahiti Nui, 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are $25.

PERFECT IN PINK October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and pink ribbons sprout everywhere to support and honor survivors of breast cancer, remember those lost the battle with cancer, and raising awareness of cancer. Pop Warner football and cheer teams do it. Some of the teams in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation do it. Game officials do it, and the symbol even overflows into the galleys as fans do it. Lenny Rapozo of the Kauai Officials Association made a donation to the American
Cancer Society representing the payment the group would receive for services, adding that for the month of October, football officials will be donning pink to supplement their black-and-white attire. The ball boys wear pink shirts, some of the officials replace their yellow infraction flags for pink ones, and others have pink whistles. Proceeds from the sale of these pink merchandise, in many instances, benefit the American Cancer Society’s battle toward eliminating breast cancer.
