t took Jon Magnussen and B.K. Cabigon about two months to translate a musical performance from English to Hawaiian. The performance, called “Pakaa Lanakila,” translated as Pakaa, the Winner, takes inspiration from the centuries old tale, “The Wind Gourd of Laamaomao,” said Magnussen, a composer with Chamber Music Hawaii.

The tale chronicles the life of a Kauai boy who receives an ancestral gourd that gives him the power to control the wind, he said. Magnussen, a professor at the University of Hawaii West Oahu, first composed the performance in English. But he wanted to pay homage to the Hawaiian culture so he decided to compose a Hawaiian language version.

“The challenge there was that because it’s a musical piece, there are specific ways the language and music interact,” he said. “So we had to get that right in SEE HAWAIIAN, PAGE 6

A funky backyard for health nuts I t all started with food. That’s how the owners of Hippie Café @ Caffe Coco — a quaint, romantic, all-organic restaurant set in a “funky backyard” met 18 years ago. Hollan Hamid was just a traveler to Kauai when she fell in love with her server — now husband — Haleem Hamid at a South Shore restaurant in Poipu. The two foodies struck up a conversation and Hollam was sold on the idea of Kau-

ai. The duo then branded Hippie Café food items and eventually purchased the 20-year-old Caffe Coco five years ago and have since rebranded the restaurant to be a place for health nuts to enjoy breakfasts and dinners. Hippie Café by day and Caffe Coco by night, the couple serves those conscientious about their diets and looking for a little TLC for their bodies. “Everyone thinks we’re

gluten-free, vegan and it makes me want to be,” Hollan Hamid said. “I’m vegan and I’m a chef, but everything in the restaurant is vegan-based.” Everything on the menu can be made vegan, she said. But she also serves organic chicken, fresh local fish, shrimp and of course tofu for protein option. But Hollan wasn’t always vegan. After analyzing her health, Hollan was inspired to

A

uthor Edward Packard was the pioneer and originator of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” style of books, where the CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS reader can make SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY different choices throughout the book and almost always find a different story with each reading. (Anybody else remember “Sugarcane Island”?) They had immediate success in the 80s and 90s, and still have a following today. Although Packard still writes books of this style under the “You-ventures” series, he recently explored a different and more traditional avenue of young people’s books, one we found to be as equally engaging. “The Good and Bad Dragon” is an all-new story that sets itself in the old-world style of fable-like storytelling. Set amidst the backdrop of Europe’s Pyrenees Mountains, the intro reads, “This is a story of a very large but not very smart dragon that can be good-hearted, but usually is not. He sleeps for hundreds of years at a time in his mountain cave. Whenever he wakes up, he just about scares to death all the dogs, sheep, goats, and people for miles around. The dragon is curious and he is hungry. Goodness knows what he’ll eat and what damage he’ll do before he goes back to his cave. Only one person has a chance of stopping him, an old woman with a weak body and a very strong will.” Nearly every page of this charming story has vividly animated illustrations by Beth Ogden, some with very evocative landscapes that easily transport the reader into the cozy village nestled in the valley of the dragon. “The Good and Bad Dragon” is a wonderful reminder that things are not always as they seem, and that any of us can face the things that frighten us once we choose to not be scared of it. A good lesson at any age! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

norkeling Saturday morning was not appropriate, said Lyle Tabata, Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 148. “This is a service project,” Tabata said. “Originally, we were going snorkeling, but with this cleanup needing to take place, snorkeling was inappropriate.” Ron Blackstad, Scoutmaster for Troop 334, said he asked the leaders of the 34 Scouts visiting from Yokohama, Japan, and they were all agreeable to helping clean the park of debris which

washed down Wailua River during the heavy rains. Nearly 80 scouts, parents, and leaders from the visiting Yokohama troops, Kauai troops 148, 133, and 334 joined the cleanup efforts spearheaded by Tommy Noyes of the Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park. “This is awesome,” said Devi Berg. “The scouts walked over from their camp at Kamalani, and after the cleanup, they will hike up Nonou Mountain before bicycling the path to Moloaa, and have a luau, afterwards.”
