Local hero, things to consider, exploration and tales of the heart are themes patrons will be exposed to Saturday. “It’s a great selection, said Danaher, a part-time Hanapepe resident. “’In Taming Wild,’ a woman took a wild mustang off range in eastern Washington, with the question, ‘Will she let me ride her, if I build enough trust.’ It’s the most heartwarming story because she didn’t use any force, horse allowed her to do it. It was really quite revealing. “Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom is a documentary about mother nature and the Japanese cherry blossoms. It tells the story of a man who is a 15th-generation cherry master.

“How to Change the World follows the adventure of young Canadian hippie journalists, photographers musicians, scientists and American draft dodgers who try to stop Richard Nixon’s atomic bomb tests in Alaska. “Red Gold is set in southwest Alaska, which is home to two popular salmon runs. In the film, a mining company has proposed a mine at the headwaters of the two rivers. “In Wayfinders: A Pacific Odyssey, the hokulea comes back to life. Haida Gwaii: On the Edge of the World explores a myth from the Haida Gwaii tribe, which is from Canada. “Several generations ago, there was a monster storm that lasted for 10 days, when it abated, they went out to see how villages withstood. And when they went to coast, they found an outrigger canoe with one survivor, Danaher said. “He ended up being a Hawaiian man who somehow

hen the topics of Kauai and beer come up, Kauai Island Brewery Co. and Grille in Port Allen wants to be part of that conversation. Which is a short and sweet explanation of the brewery’s involvement in the first Dog House Beer Fest on June 24 at the Sheraton Kauai. There will be about 40 different craft beers from 20 brewers and food from several restaurants. “Kauai and beer, we want to be what comes to their mind,” said Dave Curry, head brewer and co-owner of Kauai Island Brewing Co. “And we like to financially support local charities and this kind of thing when we can.” The popular brewery will be bringing its Captain Cook’s IPA, Curry’s favorite, and its Lilikoi Ale to the island’s beer festival, as well as a braised beef slider that incorporates that same Lilikoi Ale for added flavor. Curry is delighted Kauai finally has a beer festival, as other Hawaiian Islands do. It’s long been a needed event, he added, and long talked about. With Chris Young, the organizer behind it, Curry is sure it will be a success. “It’s really a lot to put together,” he said. “Chris is a go-getter. It’s great that he’s involved. Without him, I don’t know who else could do it.” Young, president of the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach and a financial adviser with Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, said the fundraiser will benefit two great organi-

zations, the Kauai Humane Society and Junior Achievement Kauai. One is about taking care of animals, and one is about sharing financial literacy with students. He considered other popular fundraisers, such as golf tournaments and dinners, but when the idea of a craft beer festival came up, he was all in. It is something unique and something that would appeal to both locals and visitors, and something that will be held annually. The response, Young said, has been amazing. Many have volunteered. Businesses are on board, with many providing free or discounted products and services. The highlights of the Beer Fest, of course, will be the beer. Ten brewers from around the state, and 10 from the Mainland, will be there. Those who buy tickets, $75 until June 16, will be given a 12-ounce mug that can be filled, six ounces at a time, pretty much as often as they like from 2 to 6 p.m. Music will include Tsunami Taiko, Greenstone Project and The Quake. It will bring some of the state’s best brewers to Kauai with light, dark and medium beers. There will be lagers and ales and porters and IPAs. If you have a favorite beer, chances are

you’ll find it here, as brewers in Hawaii bring their creative crafts to Kauai. “We wanted to find a way for Hawaii brewers to support the cause and to pour their beer,” Young said. Young, who is also involved as a volunteer with JA, said the Dog House Beer Fest will be a kind of like Taste of Hawaii, but with beer at the front and music in the background. They’ll try to match beers and food as they can. KHS and JA will each have informational booths, too. “We just throw a great outdoor party,” Young said. Laura Lee, KHS development director, said community support has already been great. She praised Kauai Island Brewery Co., for not only bringing beer and food, but donating cash. Joe Nelson, owner of Koloa Surf Company, an online surf shop, came on as a top sponsor and is providing event shirts and hats for free. The Beer Fest, she said, shows that a big nonprofit like KHS can come together with a small one, like

JA, to support their goals. “It’s a really great partnership,” she said. And for KHS, comes at a good time. It is overflowing with dogs and cats and is promoting foster care to alleviate crowded kennels. It is also offering a adopt one, get one free deal. On June 22, Jackson “Cat Daddy” Galaxy, host of Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell” will bring his strategies for cat-human coexistence to the Kauai for the first time in an event hosted by Kauai Humane Society. Tickets are available at kauaihumane. org and are $15 for KHS members, $30 for general admission. Admission for kids ages 6 and under is free. Curry said it was an easy call for Kauai Island Brewery to support this fundraiser and be part of beer festival. Both KHS and JA do great things, one for animals, and one for youth. “Anything out there that’s a good cause, we’ll support that however we can,” he said. For tickets, go to http://kauaihumane.org

ROAD MAP TO READING CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

M

aps. They are just plain cool to look at! Big maps? Awesome! Generally, we take them for granted nowadays. Most of us use Google Maps at a moments notice, whether it is for driving

directions, planning a trip or for use in school or for work. But it wasn’t all that long ago that maps were still a scientific form in-progress, with plenty of errors and exaggeration. Interesting thing about science—whatever we think we know for certain, 9 out of 10 times we learn later on we were wrong! Same was true for the art and science of cartography. “Maps That Changed the World” by John O. E. Clark is a wonderful and fairly concise

exploration of the evolution of maps and how certain new techniques throughout history created a quantum leap in the understanding and implementation of cartography. Utilizing an abundance of full-color maps from all eras, we are treated to an interesting and entertaining explanation of how each important map came to be and how its creation impacted our societies. Did you know that it was a French-made map that finally resolved the accurate size of the

Americas? Did you know there are maps which their authenticity is still hotly debated? Did you know some maps show lands which either no longer exist or never existed at all? Not only do we learn about world maps, there are regional maps, city maps, astronomical maps, mythological maps, and even fictional maps (like Tolkien’s Middle-Earth). Most interesting of all to us are the “propaganda maps”; these are maps which take sets of preferred data to provide a distorted or skewed view to further a political or ideological viewpoint? Forget “fake news”— how about “fake maps”!

Guaranteed, you’ll never look at a map the same again! See you book-lovers soon! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

Tom Cruises dances with the undead in ‘The Mummy’

O

f all the CGI-ed supernatural forces slung in Alex Kurtzman’s “The Mummy,” none can compete with the spectral spectacle of Tom Cruise, at 54. He and his abs are almost creepily ageless. So it’s almost

fitting that in one of the typically bonkers scenes in “The Mummy,” Cruise awakes naked and unscathed alongside cadavers in a morgue, where he bewilderedly removes the tag attached to his toe. Indefatigable and un-killable, Cruise

Visitors / residents $65 / $45 before 11am $55 / $35 after 11am $30 for Ha'upu Gold

really is the undead. He’s like the anti-Steve Buscemi. Yet Cruise and “The Mummy” — the opening salvo in Universal’s bid to birth its “Dark Universe” monster movie franchise — are a poor fit, and not the good kind, like “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.” There’s plenty of standard, cocky Tom Cruise leading man stuff here: running, swimming, daredevil airplane acrobatics, more running. But his relentless forward momentum is sapped by the convoluted monster mishmash that engulfs “The Mummy,” a movie conceived and plotted like the monster

version of Marvel. Increasingly, Cruise — like big-budget movies, themselves — is running in circles. He plays Nick Morton, a roguish Army sergeant who plunders antiquities from Iraq with his partner Chris Vail (Jake Johnson). In a remote village they, along with archaeologist Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis), unearth a giant Egyptian tomb bathed in mercury. In it lies the Egyptian princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) who was mummified alive (imagine that wrapping job) after trying to unleash the evil Egyptian god of Set while

killing her Pharaoh father, his second wife and the newborn baby that would deny her the throne. Naturally, she’s going to get loose. Hers and other backstories are shown as “The Mummy” stumbles out of its grave, vainly trying to organize the story around two burial sites (the other is in London), the strange visions that begin plaguing Morton, and a quixotic (or merely capitalistic) gambit to stitch together a unifying principle for the Dark Universe. Mysterious apocalyptic happenings (a swarm of crows, a horde of rats, occasional ghouls) prompt a series of helter-skelter chase scenes that eventually lead Morton and Halsey to Prodigium, a stealth organization led by the dapper Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe) that controls monstrous outbreaks, including those of its schizophrenic leader. For now we’re cursed with “The Mummy,” a messy and muddled product lacking

even the carefree spirit of the Brendan Fraser “Mummy” trilogy. There are moments of humor in the script by David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie, and Dylan Kussman, but Cruise isn’t the one to pull off aloofly referring to the mummy as “the chick in the box.” Almost to the degree that he was in “The Edge of Tomorrow,” Cruise is put through the ringer. A spiraling cargo plane spins him like laundry. He careens through a double-decker bus. His rib cage is yanked. Cruise remains, as ever, eminently game. But he, like us moviegoers, might have to starting wondering: What god have we angered? “The Mummy,” a Universal Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “violence, action and scary images, and for some suggestive content and partial nudity.” Running time: 110 minutes. One and a half stars out of four. ••• Associated Press
