“S

avannah Sipping Society” mixes comedy and human drama with a dash of Southern charm. The play, written by Jessie Jones, Jamie Wooten and Nicholas Hope, is the newest comedy presented by Kauai Community Players. It follows the lives of four middle-aged single women who meet during a yoga class in Savannah, Ga. “When you get to a certain age and you’re single, you start to feel out of things, and this is how the characters handle that,” said Jo Grande, director. Each character has faced her own share of trials and tribulations. “One gal, Marlafaye, her husband cheated on her. My character, Dot, is recently widowed. Jinx is the manager of a makeup store and becomes our life coach. The other character is Randa who is a career woman who just lost her job,” said Maureen Sharpe. “We get together for happy hour at Randa’s, and we start on a series of adventures and experiences where we are re-charging our lives.” The four characters, played by Sharpe, Karen Firl, Cher Ellwood and Claudia Cowden, are the only ones in the play, and they share the stage time.

Cowden, who plays Jinx, said she likes what the character brings out in her. “I feel that I have a lot of Jinx in me. Jinx is all about having fun and life’s too short,” she said. “I feel like I silence myself in real life, where on stage, they want you to be a character. I feel like my true personality is a character.” Ellwood, who plays Randa, said “Savan-

nah Sipping Society” is the fifth play she’s acted in for KCP. “Jo drew me to this play,” said Ellwood, a math teacher at Kauai High School. It’s a sentiment shared by Firl, who plays Marlafaye. “She forced me into it,” she said. Firl has been acting with KCP since 1984. “Back then, we would go out dancing and drinking after every rehearsal,” she said. “Now, we’re lucky if we manage to get out after opening night and closing night.” For Grande, there’s one line in the play that stands out. It’s: “Four older women

who thought nobody cared about them anymore.” “That really says it all,” she said. “That’s what happens to older woman when they’re single, and if you’re luck you have someone.” Performances will take place at the Puhi Theatrical

Garden Island Orchid Society’s to hold orchid show April 7-8

eill Sams of Orchid Alley in Kapaa said the orchid industry is always looking for more creative and different ways to present orchids. Sams is a regular contributor to the Garden Island Orchid Society’s annual Spring Fantasy Orchid Show and Sale on April 7 and 8 at the Hanapepe United Church of Christ social hall. “Beautiful and exotic orchids are the focus at this year’s annual show,” said Ada Koene of the GIOS. “People are encouraged to bring their cameras to the free orchid show where they are able to see award-winning specimen and shop for orchid plants and orchid-themed crafts.” Sams said among his newer items he will be putting out at the Spring Fantasy are the new phaelenopsis hybrids from Holland and Taiwan. “This cold spell did wonders for the orchids,” said Sams, who orients his growing to phaelenopsis and vanda orchids. “The timing was perfect, and plants are spiking all over the place. In a few weeks, they’ll be ready for show and at this rate, phaelenopsis should last through Mother’s Day.” Among the Dutch hybrids are plants developed through the Magic Art technique which have been very popular with customers at Orchid Alley. “Fely (Sams) said they’ve been selling very well, and selling to the point where we don’t have any of the more mature plants which customers are willing to pay extra for,” Neill said. “The Dutch hybrids also include multi-stem plants, something that is new among phalaenopsis. We also have a new variety — so new, they don’t have a name for it, yet — that we call ‘Neon’ because it has so many subtle shades, some of which are iridescent.” Sams said they will also include new

Taiwan hybrids which tend toward peach, orange, and yellow colors. “Generally, the Taiwan growers love big — the bigger and bolder, the better,” he said. “The Dutch like compact and multistems. One day, maybe I’ll combine them and see what comes out.”

He said he’ll also include plants utilizing staking techniques, including those featuring multi-stems. “Staking takes orchid presentation to another degree,” Sams said. “They are more compact, present a different view of the blooms, and generally, are easier to ship. But

you need to select specimens for staking early so they can be trained. You can take the more mature stems, but the flowers develop upside down.” Sams said he is happy with his contributions to the Spring Fantasy Orchid Show. “We have a lot more in our greenhouse,”

Sams said. “If the shop looks good, it’s even better at the greenhouse. With the weather going now, the phalaenopsis and Lady’s Slippers are going off. Hopefully, we’ll get some vanda kicking in as well.” Hours on April 7 are noon to 7 p.m., and on April 8, doors are open 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
