Night of History Holoku will be featured centerpiece at Kauai Historical Society fall fundraiser
Made from imported fabrics and worn at royal balls, parties, and special events, the holoku will be the featured centerpiece of the Kauai Historical Society’s fall fundraiser at Smith’s
Tropical Paradise from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 15. Though anyone who owns a holoku is encouraged to wear theirs at the Hoike Holoku Gala, Wong Smith said she encourages
anyone and everyone to attend the Kauai Historical Society’s premiere fundraising event of the year. “The main thing I want people to know is that you See History, Page 6

legant, graceful, traditional, the story of the holoku can be traced to nearly 200 years ago when the missionaries arrived in the Hawaiian islands. “The Hawaiian royalty women in Kona were enthralled by their dresses,” said Helen Wong Smith, Kauai Historical Society executive director. “The Hawaiian women asked to have the missionary women make them dresses. The missionary wives said the dresses will not fit them.” But the missionaries modified the dress to fit the ladies of Hawaiian royalty, Dennis Fujimoto/The Garden Island and that’s when the holoku Pua Rossi-Fukino shows off a holoku designed by Guadalupe. was born, Smith said.

BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY our latest creation,” said Cindy Wang, director of brand marketing, Kona Brewing Company. “With the distinct and beloved locally-inspired flavor profile, featuring POG — passionfruit, guava and orange, the drinkable IPA will sure to become a new favorite for beer drinkers.” Lum said she liked Hanalei Island IPA.
“I typically don’t gravitate toward IPAs, but this had a nice, refreshing, fruitier taste to it,” she said. That it was named after one of Kauai’s iconic towns, Hanalei, is special, too, Lum said. She noted the launch party was at the St. Regis Princeville Resort, overlooking Hanalei Bay. It was a gorgeous evening, made even better with a cold Hanalei Island IPA. “That was pretty cool,” she

said. “It’s fitting.” A beer named for Hanalei, Lum said, is a great concept. Kona Brewing Company continued its long standing tradition of giving back to the local Hawaii community by acknowledging the Waipa Foundation, which committed to the restoration of the local 1600-acre land division of Waipa in North Shore Kauai. To honor the year of unveiling Hanalei Island IPA, Kona Brewing Company presented Waipa Foundation with a check for $2,016. Keeping with paying homage to Hanalei, the event venue overlooked the land division (ahapua’a) managed by the Waipa Foundation. “Launching Hanalei Island IPA in the place of its inspiration is very special to Kona Brewing Company,”
Where to find Hanalei Island IPA The following kauai venues will be serving Hanalei Island IPA on Kauai. Tahiti Nui, Kalypso’s, Olympic Cafe (Kapaa and Poipu), Brenneckes in Poipu, St. Regis , Bali Hai/Happy Talk Lounge, Lava Lava, Hanalei Gourmet, Kauai Beach Resort (Shutters and Driftwood), Klub at Kiahuna, Merriman’s, Paradise Bar, Hanalei Dolphin and Street Burger. Wang said. Lum said she appreciates the efforts by Kona to be part of the community. “One thing I love about being a part of Kona Brewing, they want to give back to the community,” she said. Hawaii locals will be first to sample Kona Brewing
Company’s latest IPA before it hits the mainland market in the coming months. Kona Brewing Company was started in Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawaii in the spring of 1994 by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa, who had a dream to create
fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. Kona is Hawaii’s largest and favorite craft brewery, known for top-selling flagship beers Longboard Island Lager and Big Wave Golden Ale and award-winning innovative small-batch beers available across the Islands. The Hawaii born and Hawaii-based craft brewery prides itself on brewing the freshest beer of exceptional quality closest to market. This helps to minimize its carbon footprint by reducing shipping of raw materials, finished beer and packaging materials.

Unearth your inner gardener CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
A
loha, gardeners and readers! Many of us here in Hawai’i have some sort of garden, be it big, small or just a natural wild growth in the yard (bitter melon, anyone?). Yet, even with what space we have, sometimes either the soil isn’t so good or is real tough to work with, or, perhaps given our lifestyle or aesthetic choices, having plants in the ground isn’t really going to work, which is why we picked this weeks’ book. “Container Gardening in Hawaii: How to Grow Paradise In a Pot,” by master gardener Janice Crowl, shows us the various options to explore that really “unearths” (pun intentended) the many possibilities in growing a container garden!
Whether you are making a vast landscaped garden or just want a nice selection of potted plants on your lanai or in the house, whatever you choose to do is covered here, and with many more ideas for container types, plants type, and even layout suggestions. Both edibles and ornamental plants are given good overviews in this book, including

shading requirements for all the various types and even their Hawaiian names! Presented in a larger-size format with high-quality colorful pictures, “Container Gardening” covers it all: the Basics; Island Landscapes in Small Spaces; Creating a High-rise Paradise; Popular Island Designs, “Onolicios” Edibles; Unusual & Thrifty Containers; Maintenance; Plants for Hawai’i Container Gardens; and Resources for Container Gardening, including a well-executed index! Being in Hanapepe ourselves, which is a lot of sun and a lot of compact red dirt, we have found container gardening to be very, very useful for our many cacti, succulents, and culinary herbs (especially because they are easy to move around, too)! So, if you are ready for your own beautiful ‘self-contained’ (wink) paradisiacal Hawaiian garden, this allin-one guide is the book we recommend. ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

don’t have to wear a holoku to attend the gala,” she said. “They can come in and wear aloha attire or anything really.” During the hoike, which means to show, wparticipants will explain the background behind their holoku. “For the people who do own a holoku, we’re encouraging them to write a history of their holoku — if they’re buying their tickets online,” she said. Holoku made by the late Kauai dressmaker Guadalupe Bulatao will be worn at the gala. “Her daughter brought over a couple of her dresses,” Wong Smith said. “We’re going to have models showing them that night. This is the historical society’s effort to have everything with a histori-

cal context.” Funds from the gala will support more staff positions as well as to expand resources for the Kauai Historical Society’s vast number of items. “I don’t have enough room, and I don’t have the staff to process the collection, so we can make those lovely little finding aides that are online and searchable,” Wong Smith said. “All that takes trained effort.” The event will include pupus, drawing for prizes and music by Polei Palmeira, Kirby Keogh, Edward Punua, Michael Keale and Mark Rossi. Tickets are $35 for students through high school, $55 for KHS members and $65 for non-members. They may be purchased at the KHS office or online at www.kauaihistoricalsociety.org. Info: 245-3373
