I

Things you should know when celebrating St. Patrick’s Day

n fact, growing up in Hawaii and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day was always strange. The way St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in America is not how it is celebrated in Ireland. Sure, there is a parade in Dublin and everyone enjoys themselves, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the Irish holiday that have always bothered me. First of all, St. Patrick’s Day should be an actual holiday if it is going to be so widely celebrated. It’s a national holiday in Ireland, so why not make it one in America? The whole concept of wearing green or else you’ll be pinched? Where did that come from? It certainly isn’t an Irish tradition. Green beer? Irish people don’t need to dress up a beer to make it cute. Just drink a Guinness instead.

But when you do enjoy the taste of a Guinness, make sure to drink it responsibly. And by drinking responsibly, I mean make sure you drink a Guinness the proper way instead of drinking it the millisecond the bartender slides the pint to you from across the bar. Patience is a virtue when drinking a Guinness. Wait for the head of the beer to reach the top of the glass — never drink a Guinness that is still brown or foaming. Wait for the beer to turn to a perfect black color, with the head of the beer near the rim of the glass before enjoying your first sip. And when you do raise that cold, perfectly poured pint, don’t say “cheers!” Because it’s St. Patrick’s Day, instead of cheers say Sláinte! Pronounced “slancha,” this

snakes from the Emerald Isle. Ireland has never had actual snakes. Snakes are a reference to Paganism, and St. Patrick converted the people of Ireland to Christianity. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year the right way, the Irish way. Have a traditional Irish dinner of corned beef with cabbage and make sure that roast potatoes are on the menu. While there isn’t an Irish bar on Kauai, there are local establishments to go for a pint and celebrate the evening. Kauai is a difficult place to drive at night as it is and we all want to make sure that we can all celebrate St. Patrick’s Day next year together, so don’t go too crazy on the alcohol. Besides, nobody enjoys seeing someone doing Irish yoga on a sidewalk.

is Gaelic for toasting to good health, be it physical or mental. Another thing: Don’t ever say St. Patty’s Day. It’s St. Patrick’s Day or St. Paddy’s Day. It’s never going to be St. Patty’s Day. Ever. Paddy is a shortened name for Pádraig, which is Patrick in English. It has never been — nor will it ever be — Patty. Patty is another name for Patricia, not a name normally associated with a man. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, but he isn’t Irish at all. He is actually Welsh. A slave brought to Ireland at the age of seven, St. Patrick was forced to guard sheep for a number of years before he fled the country for France, where he trained as a priest before returning to Ireland. And when he did return to Ireland, he didn’t banish

ince it’s St. Patrick’s Day, perhaps a good Irish movie is just what’s needed to get in the spirit of things. Here, according to IrishCentral.com, are some of the

best.

The Commitments Legendary Irish film about a group of down-and-out Dubliners who form a soul band. Jimmy Rabbitte has dreams of creating the ultimate soul group, and succeeds in bringing together a bunch of talented, eclectic characters. But eventually personalities clash, and the survival of the band is threatened. This adaptation of the Roddy Doyle novel featured a relatively unknown cast at the time, but was welcomed with critical acclaim and a successful box office run.

The Quiet Man A beloved classic starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. This romantic drama from director John Ford tells the story of Sean Thornton, a retired American boxer who relocates to Ireland to reclaim his family’s farm, and Mary Kate Danaher, the fiery Irishwoman he falls in love with. Though its portrayal of Ireland may be a bit outdated, the film is a genuine tribute to Eire, and both an American and Irish favorite.

My Left Foot A true story about an Irishman who overcomes his disability to become an amazing painter, poet and writer. Another film from Jim Sheridan, it documents the extraordinary life of Christy Brown (Daniel Day-Lewis), a working class Irishman born with crippling cerebral palsy. With the encouragement of his mother, played by Brenda Fricker, Christy learns to write and draw with his only functional limb – his left foot. Both Day-Lewis and Fricker won Academy Awards for their roles.

The Field A story about an Irishman’s love of his land from director Jim Sheridan. Bull McCabe (played by Richard Harris, who was nominated for an Oscar for the role) is a farmer in Ireland’s rural west. When his field is threatened to be sold to an outsider, Bull will do anything in his power to stop it from happening. An unforgettable film about the conflict between “old” and “new” Ireland.

Waking Ned Devine Charming comedy set in a tiny, rural Irish town. When lottery winner Ned Devine is found dead — lottery ticket in hand and all — the townsfolk band together to fool the authorities into thinking Ned is alive, so they can receive the cash and share it. Starring Ian Bannen and Fionnula Flanagan.

UHI — More than 600 people enjoyed “One Fine Evening” hosted by the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach at the Luau Pavilion at the Kilohana Estates. “This is our club’s major fundraiser,” said Jan Pascua of the Poipu Rotary. “Our goal is to raise at least $30,000 for the club’s college scholarships for nursing and culinary arts programs at the Kauai Community College, service projects focused on youth and education, and community grants.” Chris Young, president for the Rotary Club of Poipu, was happy with the community response to the club’s major fundraiser. “I’m on Cloud 9 right now,” Young said. “We have more than 20 culinary arts students from the college who we could pair with professionals to offer a variety of food for people to enjoy.” Artists like Patrick Ching were peppered through the arena offering demonstrations and artwork for sale, augmenting the silent auction area. Everything was blanketed by the liberal wine stations and live entertainment.
