Treat mom to something special this Mother’s Day
I
f you’re taking your mom out for Mother’s Day, you can’t go wrong, no matter where you go. There are plenty of places to try and you and mom will leave happy and full.
Tahiti Nui Let’s start with one of Kauai’s oldest and most beloved restaurants, Tahiti Nui in Hanalei. The iconic bar is known for more than its fabulous food. It’s the atmosphere and the ambiance that make it one of those special places the moment you step in the door. Whether you’re sitting around the bar (which is great for people watching) or sitting at one of the tables (which is great for watching the musicians who play there each night starting at 6 p.m.) It can be a bit loud sometimes when the tunes roar to life, but you’ll soon find yourself soaking in the decades of dining and celebrating that have gone on at “The Nui,
as regulars call it. Be sure to check on the pictures on the walls, and chat with some regulars, to get a sense of the history of this place. But since it’s the food you’ll be after on Mother’s Day, the offerings are many. Some highlights from the regular menu include slow roasted baby back ribs ($21); 14-ounce black angus grilled rib eye with gorgonzola cream sauce and fried onions, ($30); 12-ounce Nui burger on brioche bun with
fried onions, ($18) and fresh seared island ahi steak with wasabi cream sauce ($25). Bull Shed Another longtime popular eatery is the Bull Shed in Kapaa. If it’s steak and seafood you want, along with an unrivaled oceanview, and friendly, fast service, stop in. It’s clean, comfortable and relaxing. The menu includes favorites like prime rib, New York steak, lobster, rack of lamb
two locations!
and seared ahi. Its popular prime rib comes in two sizes, the Bull Shed Cut (with bone) 26 to 28 ounces for $37, and the regular cut (no bone) (12 ounces) $29. The menu also includes a catch of the day, which is locally caught opah, swordfish or mahi mahi. The Bull Shed offers surf and turf items, baby back ribs and teriyaki chicken breast. There’s another main attraction for the Bull Shed: The view. It’s unparalleled. Even if you miss out on one of the premier spots, the elevated dining tables and seats offer an equally wonderful view of the ocean. Kukui’s Poolside Restaurant & Bar Kukui’s Poolside Restaurant & Bar at the Marriott on Kalapaki Beach is known for the beauty. It’s here you can experience dishes of the Pacific Rim and island-inspired cuisine prepared in the oceanside setting. Get there
early enough to catch the sun as its sets over the bay. If you’re really looking to pamper mom, stop in and check out the menu. Steak, seafood, chicken and pasta are among the offerings. Depending on your palate, you might want to try the peppered tenderloin, ($38); Kona and Alae Salt crusted prime rib ($34); sizzling mongolian beef ($29); lemongrass chicken ($28) and the popular Hawaiian Combo, which is kalua pork, huli huli chicken, fried chili pepper fish, pineapple teriyaki beef, lomi salmon and buttered sweet potatoes. If it’s noodles you’re after, try the housemade fettucine for $20 or the Indochina chicken lunguine $24. And after you eat, be sure to take a walk along the torch-lit path or even a barefoot stroll along the beach and let ocean waves roll over your feet. The perfect end to a perfect evening.
Naupaka Terrace Restaurant You’ll be mom’s favorite son or daughter if you take in dinner and views at the Naupaka Terrace Restaurant at the Kauai Beach Resort. Tough to beat the views of torch-lit waterfalls, fishponds, pools and, of course, the ocean. It’s elegant dining, plantation-style, in a peaceful, serene setting, sure to ease any worries of the day. It’s another of Kauai’s hidden gems just off Kuhio Highway and a short drive down a tree-lined road. The menu features Hawaiian and Pan Pacific cuisine, fresh island catch, aged beef, salads and pastas. You might want to try the Garlic Herb Steak, Sizzling Kalbi Ribs, Bamboo Steamed Salmon and seafood linguini. CHLOE MARCHANT TGIFR!DAY
Kauai Dance Theatre students put on ‘Aloha, Hollywood!’ concert
T
ake a trip to Hollywood on May 9, as Kauai Dance Theater performs its 29th spring concert themed “Aloha, Hollywood! Dancers aged 4 to 18 will take your breath away as they perform classical ballet, contemporary dance, tap dance, novelty and comedy dance. Each performance will feature familiar music made famous from the movies and provides the perfect accompaniment for a variety of dance styles. Kauai Dance Theatre director, teacher and chore-
ographer Janie Crane enjoys teaching various dance styles and the music of “Aloha, Hollywood! provides a perfect opportunity to showcase that variety. “I have studied dance since age 11 and have always enjoyed being a part of dance groups. In my 20s, I performed with a regional ballet company for six years and also taught dance along the way, Crane said in an email. After moving to Kauai in the 1980s, one of Crane’s teachers, Marion Walmar Cozad, retired and asked Crane to fill in.
“The timing was right for me to switch gears and in 1986 Kauai Dance Theatre was established, Crane said. Kauai Dance Theatre students range in age from 4 years old to adults. This concert will be a first-time stage experience for some and others have been dancing and performing for 10 years or longer. Personalities range from the enthusiastic “ballerina-wannabe to the realistic “this is hard work but I love it accomplished dancers, Crane added. Students have been rehearsing day in and day out
to get their dances down. Choreography for the performance has been in the works for months, but many students have been preparing by studying dance for years. “They will appreciate the fresh enthusiasm of the preschool students as well as the grace and poise of teen students who have been polishing their craft for a number of years, Crane said on what the audience can expect. The hard work and practice pays off when dancers get the chance to dress up in costume and show off
their talent. “Dance is a performing art so a concert provides the opportunity for students dancing, their ‘art,’ to be viewed and appreciated. Choreography is based on the steps, movements and artistry that dancers study during the process of progressive improvement and advancement. Rehearsing for a concert allows students to practice these movements repeatedly to improve the quality of their dancing. Crane said. The concert is set for two shows, 2 and 5 p.m. at Kauai War Memorial Con-
vention Hall. Tickets are $10 at the door; ages 3 and younger are free. Proceeds benefit the YWCA Women’s Shelter and Kauai Dance Theatre’s scholarship program. “I would like audience members to leave the theater with a sense of joy after watching all of the enthusiastic dancers perform — from the youngest aspiring ballerinas to the more accomplished teen students, Crane said. Battling cancer at the Relay HANAPEPE — Hundreds of people waged a battle against cancer during the 30th anniversary of the Relay for Life Saturday at the Hanapepe soccer fields. Nearly 60 teams celebrated survivors of cancer, people who are battling the disease as well as remembering those who succumbed to the fight. “We have a team this year,” said Josie Pablo, recreation director for Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. “We’re doing this for our residents, staff, retirees, volunteers, and family members who are struggling with, or survivors of cancer.” Mary Lardizabal, a Kapaa Middle School teacher, said the North Shore Relay for Life is currently recruiting teams for its event starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Kauai Christian Academy in Kilauea. “We have lots of room for more teams,” Lardizabal said. “Right now, we’re at nine teams, and counting.”
