Authentic Mexican cuisine in Kapaa W ALDEN ALAYVILLA TGIFR!DAY
ith a variety of dishes originating from the Mexican states of Guerrero and Jalisco, Mariachi’s Authentic Mexican Cuisine in Kapaa serves some of the island’s best south-of-the-border food and drinks in a friendly atmosphere. Rosy Aguirre, Mariachi’s manager, has worked at the Kauai eatery for two years and spent 15 years at Mariachi’s California location.
“First there is the food. The environment here, we are all like family,” she said. “We always want the customers, while they’re here, to be happy and enjoy everything.” That family-like atmosphere rubbed off on summer employee Gerardo Ramirez, who is spending his second straight summer working at Mariachi’s. The San Diego State incoming junior is working as a waiter.

hile we were away, some very key things emerged in the news and we immediately remembered that George Friedman had accurately forecasted these headlines in his timely book: “The Next Decade: Empire and Republic in a Changing World.” ◗ United States and Iran reach an uncomfortable accommodation regarding Iran’s nuclear abilities. ◗ Financial crisis in Europe challenges the very core of the European Union. ◗ Russia re-emerges as a substantial European power, working to reclaim its former Soviet territories.
In his book, George Friedman (author of “The Next 100 Years”) focuses his highly accurate geopolitical forecasting ability on the years spanning 2012-2022, and so far his forecasts have been spot on! He focuses on the position of the United States in the world and what awaits it in the coming years. According to Friedman, the United
States is in an unusual situation where it is not only the most powerful and influential nation in the world, it is at a point where the foundation of the republic is at odds with the nation’s need to manage its unintentional empire (his explanation of how this came to be is very fascinating!). Since the United States, he posits, is no longer in an ideological power struggle against a single hegemonic force (the former Soviet Union), it now must work to balance the powers of K the various regions of the world, all Q while working to resolve the world’s and its own economic issues. He reveals all the possible outcomes the United States has in these regions, and gives very clear and objective views on what the likely outcome will be. This book has been a continuous seller in our bookstore and we look forward to seeing you soon! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are the owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

he ice cakes served up by the employees and families of The Club at Kukuiula were the perfect way to beat the heat and humidity at the annual Koloa Plantation Days parade and park celebration. Served out of a replica of the Kukuiula General Store, the tasty morsels triggered memories of days when the ice cakes cooled workers toiling in the hot sun in the plantation fields. “We made it ourselves,” said Tammy Puu.
But Koloa Outrigger Canoe Club coach Sale Potts said it best. “This is not for us,” Potts said. “We already did this for years. This is for the young guys so they can learn — the legacy lives on!” The Koloa Plantation Days is a 10-day commemoration and celebration of the plantation lifestyle which is the root of the Koloa town and its neighboring Poipu community. It wrapped up Sunday.
