illing Kauai radio waves for the past two years, the hit song “Rude” by the Canadian reggae fusion band Magic! has been a fixture with local listeners. The people of Kauai, however, will be in for a treat on Jan. 17. Magic! will be performing for the first time on the island at the Pacific Missile Range Facility from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is being put on by Armed Forces Entertainment, the enter-

tainment branch of the Department of Defense, with the Air Force being the executive agent for the program. Happy Thai eating Bistro & Bar opens in Poipu

A

new Thai joint just opened up on Kauai and there is a meal for everyone. Bangkok Happy Bowl Thai Bistro & Bar in Poipu opened on Dec. 18. Judie Arunrung, waitress at the restaurant, said the place has been busy through the holidays. The restaurant features authentic Thai dishes created by Paula Coult, one of the owners of the new establishment who is originally from Colorado. Paula and her husband Kirk Coult have two other restaurants in Colorado and a third on the way under construction in the Centennial State. So why come all the way to Kauai? “Because we love the South Shore on Kauai,” Kirk Coult said. “We loved the island. Thai food is our business. We came for our anniversary and we wanted to enjoy that here and that there wasn’t a place for that on the South Shore.” Kirk said his wife, who is of Thai ancestry, started her first Thai restaurant 26 years ago in Sydney, Australia. It’s still going strong today, he said. He wanted to bring that love of Thai food to Kauai and its people and he thought Poipu was the best place to do it. Kirk Coult said live entertainment starts every night at 6 p.m. and the restaurant features specialty Thai cocktails. Bangkok Happy Bowl Thai Bistro & Bar

Another name for inspiration ‘[title of show]’ opens tonight

PUHI — “[title of show],” directed by Chris Alderete opens tonight at the Puhi Theatrical Playhouse. The musical written by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell is being put on by Kauai Community Players. It tells the story of Jeff and Hunter (played by Robert Carrasco and Ross Martineau), two struggling writers who hear about a new musical theater festival. The deadline for submissions is three weeks away. They decide to create something new with the help of their friends, Susan (Jennifer Downs) and Heidi (Jessika Montoya). In the span of 90 minutes, they write and perform their show at the festival and learn lessons about themselves as people, friends and artists. Alderete, who directed Hawaii Children Theatre’s “Next To Normal” last year, said the production is both humorous and inspiring. “This is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen,” Alderete said. “You will laugh so much it hurts.”

••• COME WATCH “[title of show]” runs on weekends starting Jan. 8 through Jan. 24. Shows are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. General tickets for opening weekend are $20, $18 for seniors and $15 for Kauai Community Players members and students. For the rest of the shows, general tickets are $25, seniors tickets are $23 and KCP members and students are $20. For tickets, go to http://kauaicommunityplayers.org or they are available at the door if the show is not sold out. Info: 245-7700.

But he also loves it and wanted to direct it because of its inspirational message. “Once you see the show, you understand what it is to create something, and you are inspired to do something yourself,” he said. The cast has previous stage experience and some have performed together. They share a chemistry that will capture the audience, Alderete said. Martineau saw “[title of show]” on Broadway.

“It’s just such special show,” he said. “A love Carrasco called it “one of a kind.” letter to theater and people of the theater. “You’ve never seen a show like this before. I’m so glad we get to do it here.” It’s just a pure night of fun.”

ew Year’s night was “just another night,” said Ed Justus of the Talk Story Bookstore. Every Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m., the town bustles with fun and activity when the sun sets and the Hanapepe Friday Night Festival and Art Walk comes to life along the main road through historic Hanapepe Town. Hosted by the Hanapepe Economic Alliance, the festive atmosphere opens doors to meeting the local

artists and gallery owners under an umbrella of aromatic food and music from local musicians. “We were open on Christmas, as well,” Justus said. “There were some vendors who took advantage of the holiday by not coming out, but for those who did, this was just another night.” You can read the reviews on the social media, but there is nothing like experiencing the nightfall in person.
