SINGING TH W hen the Kauai Island Singers Showcase sing, they don’t do it so people can hear them. “We sing so people can feel us,” said member Trudy Vella. People will have a chance to both hear and feel the songs performed by the community group on Saturday when “KISS sings great music by musical greats” this weekend. The show, their last until March, is set to begin at 6 p.m. at All Saints Church in Kapaa. It is free, but donations are accepted. The “Legends, Divas and Superstars” concert will feature classic songs of Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Etta James, Meghan Trainor, Donna Summer, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, The Pointer Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Elton John and Ray Charles. It will be what is described as a wide range of genres — jazz, soul, standards, country, rock n roll, blues, opera, disco, funk and Motown. Performers will be Vella, Erik Hagen, Mike Kobayashi, Lee Miller, Trishana Star, Stanley Wolshin, Mary Ellen Kopitzke, Melissa Mojo, Siri Shabad and Diana Leone. The band includes Hank Curtis on piano, Paul Foti on bass and Jim Fiore on drums. “The band is really smoking,” Mojo said. The 90-minute concert promises to be high energy, entertaining and filled with tunes people can sing along with.

HE GREAT SONGS Jessica Else/The Garden Island

Above: Lee Miller sings Frank Sinatra’s “I Get A Kick Out Of You” at the Kauai Island Singers Showcase rehearsal. Below: Paul Foti, on the bass, backs up the singers for Saturday’s KISS concert.

“You’re going to know practically all the songs,” Mojo said. It will also be what she called a “very heartbased” show highlighted by solo performances. “We’re doing it because we love it and we’re giving it to the community,” said Mojo, who plans to sing “Nice ‘N’ Easy made famous

by Frank Sinatra, and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. Other songs will include: Leone singing “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” and “Unchain My Heart.” Miller will sing “I get a kick out of you.” Shabad will sing the disco hit, “Hot Stuff,” and a Stevie Wonder number, “Superstition.” Wolshin is set to sing “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Quando, Quando, Quando.” Vella will sing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” One of the songs by Kopitzke will be “I”m so excited,” made famous by the Pointer Sisters. Kobayashi is set to sing “Sweet Caroline,” a Neil Diamond tune now popular at Boston Red Sox games, and “On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever.” Star will sing “Better When I’m Dancin’” by Meghan Trainor. The songs will be upbeat, mellow and in between. “It’s going to be a really fun show,” Mojo said. KISS has been around four years. It’s for people who want to get more experience performing live on stage, expand their repertoire and just love to sing and put on a show. Members bring their own styles and talents with a common goal. “We do it because we love it,” Mojo said. “We’re like an ohana.”

hat isn’t there to like about Tidepools at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa? There must be something. There must be something to point out that needs improving or changing, something that just isn’t quite right. Perhaps the food isn’t great. Or maybe the service was slow. Or the atmosphere was a bit gloomy and noisy. But an evening that started in the recently renovated lounge with a white swan and koi fish swimming in the lagoon

professional. They don’t just take your order and disappear until your food is ready. The wait staff is engaging an personable. These folks make it clear they appreciate your business and are glad you’re joining them for an evening out. You won’t find frowns here. The setting makes one feel like you can just sit back and relax. The tables and chairs are arranged to create a sense of privacy, even when Tidepools is filled with guests. You don’t feel like the people at the nearby table are practically joining you for dinner. The remodeled lounge, with an outrigger hanging from the ceiling, is open and spacious and a great for conversation and to simply admire the surrounding beauty, inside and outside. It’s much more than a place you wait for your dinner table to be ready. It’s a destination — a place to spend a few hours, if you want, with friends in a beautiful setting of gorgeous gardens and grounds and watch spectacular sunsets.

Dennis Fujimoto/The Garden Island

The view from one of the tables set up in the Tidepools lounge.

And some of the items on the lounge menu are not on the dining room menu. And for such a nice, upscale establishment, it maintains a relaxed, casual feel. The lounge is the perfect place for one of the many specialty drinks (You can’t go wrong with any of them, but a favorite is

Surfer Girl, made with Bacardi silver rum, peach liqueur, lime juice and honey syrup), a glass or bottle of of wine (chardonnay, pinot noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon are among the wide selection) or an appetizer (Shrimp Shiso Tempura, Ahi Hamachi Poke Duo and the Crab Chorizo Creamy Cheese Dip are to die for.) The dining room is both open and yet, still cozy. Many tables offer a close look at the colorful koi fish in the lagoon. Add on the swaying palm trees and a light breeze that keep things cool, and you’ll be hooked. And then, there’s the food. Warning: Don’t fill up on the appetizers, which you easily could. Save room for dinner, with selections from land or sea. The grilled New York steak was a perfect medium. The opah was moist and came as close to being melting-in-your mouth” special as a fish could. If you want both, create your own surf and turf for a few

dollars more. The generous 12-ounce cut of the certified angus slow-roasted prime rib (tender and juicy at medium rare) might be too much for one person to finish off. Sea selections include Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi, Grilled Ahi, Local Snapper and Butter Poached lobster. For dessert, and they’re pretty much all delicious, the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake, Kauai Coffee Creme Brulee and the Coconut Chiffon Mousse Cake are particularly good. As for the prices, for appetizers, they’re in the $18 range. Dinners from the sea are in the $45 range, and $33 to $49 from the land. Desserts are $12 to $14. A couple enjoying a nice night out should expect to spend around $100. That might sound like a lot, but Tidepools, with outstanding food, drink, atmosphere and service, delivers an experience that some might say is priceless.

possible new digs! DK’s excellent “Eyewitness Travel” series produces high quality, well-researched books in glossy full-color to give the best experience possible. We ourselves have traveled with DK guides, and love them! “DK’s Eyewitness Travel — Canada” guidebook has 920 photographs, 110 detailed maps, and 45 illustrations, and gives you nearly everything you need to get to know the land that puts the “north” in “North America.” You get to learn in detail about their ten provinces (their states) and three territories, both what they are like today and how they came to be, including the many wondrous and beautiful natural features of each area. From majestic mountain ranges carved by glaciers, to dense forests areas, and even the vast

expanse of frozen tundra to the farthest northern reaches, DK explores them all! Best of all, they can be used many years after their original printing, because DK focuses mostly on what doesn’t change: history, landscapes, historic sites, city layouts, must-see places. It also covers hotels and some restaurants, but the wealth of its information is timeless. “DK’s Eyewitness Travel: Canada” is a great way to discover Canada. And who knows, you may think their grass is greener and want to stay! Or perhaps, like most of us after a long out-of-country travel, you’ll be quoting Oz’s Dorothy saying “There’s no place like home!” ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.
