Upcycling at Kauai Fashion Weekend DENNIS FUJIMOTO TGIFR!DAY

he thigh-high outfit created by Christiane Love, and shown by model Natalia Alvarez would turn heads — not only on the catwalk, but on the everyday street. “This is an upcycle,” Love said. “It was created using a bed sheet that outlived its life in a resort. Bed sheets are good material — they’re Egyptian and have a high thread count. The drawback of using new sheets is they are hard and too crisp. Once they have served in the resorts, they still have a lot of life. They don’t belong in the landfill.” Love is one of three Kauai designers, labeled the Dynamic 3 by Marynel Valenzuela, the Kauai Fashion Weekend coordinator, who will be joining the field of the seventh annual Kauai

Vendor booths may be available from as early as 11 a.m. “I had two pieces — kimono — three years ago,” said Love, who owns Silk and Cotton out of Kekaha. “They were used as cover ups for bikini. This year, I’ve been privileged to have been asked to show six upcycled pieces. These pieces are entirely created by myself, including drafting, scaling, creating the artwork, dying, and even the accessories.” Silk and Cotton has been a vendor at the KFW for at least three years. It is geared to inspire, showcase, and celebrate the creativity of Kauai in a signature red carpet event presented by Inkspot Printing Corp., and Ahmadcouture. “The Kauai designer segment is themed upcycling,” said Julie Lopez of Leiko. “Everything I use I get from around the community — friends, family, online, and in thrift shops. I work out of a shipping container in Anahola and take pieces, some up to 50 years old, and remake it into something fashionable. Everybody’s doing it.” Desiree Duclayan is the model coordinator for Kauai Fashion Weekend. She also is Dezignz by Deziray, who is the third of the “budding designers” that form the Kauai contingent of designers presenting upcycled material during the showcase. “This is exciting,” Duclayan said. “I’ve been doing recycling work since 2004. It’s good to continue the work I’ve been doing for so long, and it’s exciting to have the opportuni-

TIME FOR A TIKI BAR TRIP
Hilton Garden Inn Kauai debuts Mamahune’s TGIFR!DAY
H
ilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay debuted Mamahune’s, a retro-inspired tiki bar and restaurant, on Sunday. Open daily from 11 a.m., Mamahune’s will offer contemporary Hawaiian cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and picturesque views of Wailua Bay. The name Mamahune’s was inspired by a fictional character, Mama Menehune, whose children, the Menehune, ancient craftspeople of Hawaiian legend, built this tiki shack by the sea for her. Mamahune’s encompasses classic tiki flair from the 50s, 60s, and 70s featuring a custom, hand-carved wooden bar, ample seating, and an erupting volcano in an inviting open-air space that welcomes visitors and locals alike to experience quintessential island vacation vibes year-round.
Mamahune’s menu highlights local ingredients prepared with a fresh vision. Guests can enjoy Ahi Poke and Avocado Nachos with Hawaiian yellowfin tuna and crispy wontons; Crispy Rice Sliders with marinated Spam, topped with grilled pineapple salsa with nori and sesame mayo; Steamed Bao with Char Siu pork and spicy chili slaw; Shave Ice with a choice of pureed strawberry, mango, lilikoi, guava, or POG; Dole Whip Kona Coffee Ice Cream; and more. Signature tropical libations abound including Mama-
hune’s Ali’i Tai, a delicious spin on the classic Mai Tai infused with guava, nectar, pineapple juice, lime, and coconut water; Mamahune Grog, a refreshing grapefruit cocktail with China China liquor finished with lime juice; and Shipwrecked, a twist on an old fashioned with Koloa aged rum, pineapple simple syrup, and Peychaud’s all smoked with island flavors. Or you can try something on fire, literally – Da Very Sneaky Tiki. As the name would suggest – the ingredients are secret, but the drink is made to be shared.

ould any fictional gadget be more coveted by Hollywood executives than the memory-erasing “Men in Black” neuralyzer? Imagine the lucrative benefits of being able to, with a single flash, make moviegoers forget the film they just saw. Franchises would be endlessly renewable. IP could last forever. Instead, we get film series perpetuated beyond their natural end with the hope that you remember them enough to get you in the door but not enough that you’re much bothered by regurgitated storylines. To be honest, I don’t recall much from the first three “Men in Black” films, all by Barry Sonnenfeld, except the original’s light wit, the fine chemistry between the leads, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, and the likable premise that aliens

‘THE DESCENDANTS’ WILL HAVE YOU VISITING HANALEI BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY
Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of reviews of movies either shot in part on Kauai or connected to Kauai.
T
here are many reasons to like “The Descendants”, starting with: ◗ Several scenes were filmed on Kauai. ◗ It shows my favorite restaurant and bar, Tahiti Nui, and the now-famous George Clooney seat. ◗ Speaking of Clooney, he runs on the beach at Hanalei Bay. ◗ Clooney also runs in a pair of flip-flops as he charges to confront friends about a family situation. ◗ Spoiler alert, in the end Clooney rejects a plan for major development on Kauai. Now there’s much more to this 2011 film starring Clooney, Shailene Woodley and also includes Beau Bridges
Returns
and some appearances by Kauai’s own Laird Hamilton. It is based on the excellent novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. In a nutshell, it’s about a hard-working attorney on Oahu (Matt King played by Clooney) whose wife is in a coma after being injured in a skiing accident, so he must figure out how to relate to his two daughters. He also learns, via his oldest daughter, that his wife was cheating on him. He also learns, via the doctor, his wife will not come out of the coma. He’s also torn on whether his family should sell their land trust on Kauai which would bring in millions, but would change the landscape of this island because it would usher in a major development, bringing with it more people and more traffic (some things never change). While there are light moments in the film, it’s not a comedy. Clooney’s Matt King character stands out as the

conflicted husband, father and the lawyer with final say over a major land trust decision. For someone who obviously has success with looks, money, career, home and family, he’s messed up. His daughters have issues, his wife was going to leave him, his family wants to sell this land and get their money and he is wondering what the future holds. His emotions range from anger to disappointment to despair and of resignation that his life may not be what he wanted, but he has time to set a new course and by the end, you get the sense he will find that course and follow it. One line early in the movie is telling. I repeat it, sans a profanity at the end: “My friends think just ing waves. Are they insane? because we live in Hawaii, Do they think we’re immune we live in paradise. We’re all just out here sipping Mai Tais, to life?” We are not, but there is a shaking our hips and catch-
form of Laurent and Larry Bourgeois. For anyone who’s seen Beyoncé’s “Homecoming,” the dancing identical twins are suitably out-ofthis-world. They are lethal emissaries for an intergalactic force known as the Hive, even if the twins’ Queen B is sadly nowhere to be seen. The action skips around between Paris and London and Marrakech, but the film gets a comic lift when Kumail Nanjiani enters as the voice of a strange little chess board creature named Pawny who pledges
dants. Overall, it’s a solid movie. Not great, but it’s good. It offers some nice looks of Kauai. They drive by Kealia Beach and the Lihue Airport gets some attention. And there are views of the stunning scenery, particularly a shot of the South Shore (Kipu Ranch, I read somewhere) that shows where the proposed development would go (remember, this is fiction). And once you watch it, you’ll have to visit Tahiti Nui and sit in the Clooney seat and have a beer and listen to music. You’ll have to run on the beach and you’ll have to peek over the hedges to look at the beachfront home used in the film. Yes, it’s still there (but don’t trespass to get a closer look). This movie pretty much belongs to Clooney and he delivers a strong, believable lot to be said for sunshine performance. and beaches and aloha. his devotion to Agent M. The plotting is clunky and haphazard. But when together, Thompson, Hemsworth and Nanjiani turn “Men In Black: International” into something funny and silly: a pleasant enough lark in formal wear. “Men in Black: International,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for sci-fi action, some language and suggestive material.
