As he’s aged, McGuinn has but one rule of the road: theaters only. “I used to take anything that would come in, he said. “Now, I just do theaters. We want to play in nice theaters with comfortable seats for people.” Mr. Tambourine Man became a big hit for the Byrds in 1965 and McGuinn was their leader, known for his fearless sense of experimentation. He was on the leading edge, combining the rock beat of the Beatles with the folk sensibilities of Bob Dylan, to create the
genre known as “folk-rock.” One of the Byrd’s biggest hits, “Turn! Turn! Turn! was written by McGuinn’s friend and fellow musician Pete Seeger. The lyrics, like “to everything there is a season,” are based on the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. Seeger was a big influence on McGuinn’s career. “He made me want to play the guitar,” McGuinn said. He and Camilla love life in Florida, where they enjoy walking, listening to classical and jazz music and swimming in their pool. Doors open at 7 and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $50 (first five rows) and $40. They are available at Small Town Coffee (Kapaa); Kauai Music and Sound (Kapaa); Scotty’s Music (Lihue); Progressive Expressions (Koloa) ; Kalaheo Music & Strings (Kalaheo); Hanalei Strings and Things (Hanalei).

arly this year, Romey Curtis and Women in Theater announced they were looking for a few good plays. They got them. Try 125. And some were “absolutely opus.” The best of those submissions will be on display this weekend as WIT presents its fifth biennial “Kauai Shorts 10-Minute Play Festival.” There will be 16 plays by 16 playwrights put on at 7 tonight and Saturday at Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center — eight plays each night. Curtis, the festival’s chair and WIT director, promises a wonderful time for guests, who not only get to watch creative plays, but vote for their favorite play via an applause meter. The louder the cheers the better for that play. “Of course, it will be a comedy,” Curtis said. “It’s always a comedy.” The new and original plays range from hilarious to serious, evocative to provocative. more than one play. Playwrights had the green light to write about any subject suitable for a general audience. Topics included love stories, spy stories and murder mysteries — anything goes. Each carries distinct themes, plots and thoughts. “One of the things I like
about this year is the variety,” Curtis said. A panel of judges will choose the best drama and the best comedy, and the audience will vote for their favorite play. There will be plenty of choices. SEE SHORTS, PAGE 6

“You might not think much of one, but the next one coming up is just your cup of tea,” she said. Some of the plays in Kauai Shorts promise to take viewers on a captivating ride. There’s “At Least I Got Out of My Pajamas,” by Sheila Rinear; “A Dream Come True,” by Andy Melamed; and “A Murder of Crows,” by Lee Richard Lawing. One is a story about the dreams and lives of a husband and wife. Another “mixes macabre with a dash of humor.” The “Bone Peddlers” by Leslea Kroll is a “cautionary tale” that takes place in a world when all the fossil fuels have run out and the only fuel left is bones. This year’s submissions were judged by an English professor, a college drama professor and a stage director.
A few submissions, she added, were well written and had interesting characters, “but they didn’t go anywhere. They were just people talking.” A hook is helpful, something that will quickly engage and hold the attention of the audience. “It’s good if the end The cast of “At least I Got gives you a little twist,” out of my Pjamas” by Sheila Curtis said. Step into the world of fantasy
CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
I
n the last 10 years, the genre of fantasy novels has gained a vast newfound popularity with the influence of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films, and the Game of Thrones television series. Readers have been thrilled to see their favorite books come to life and to be able to share their favorite genre with the rest of the world. In turn, the readership of these fantasy stories has grown immensely and the demand for new authors and high-quality in-depth storytelling has grown with it. One of these wonderful new award-winning authors
is Patrick Rothfuss and we are featuring the first installation of his multi-part saga, “The Name of the Wind (Book One of the Kingkiller Chronicle).” Readers will become absorbed in this excellently written saga with complex characters and brilliant plot twists in his skillfully realized setting in which the story takes place. The story follows in the first person narrative of a
mysterious young man, Kvothe, who grows to be the most notorious magician his world has ever seen. Kvothe’s story begins with him as a destitute vagabond child and we follow him as he recalls the incredible events of his life. Through brilliant cunning he learns to fend for himself, and then soon is drawn to a highly secretive school of magic where he finds a way to be accepted and begins to learn secrets and talents he could not have imagined. The path he starts on will take him (and you the reader) into wild places and stunning events. It is understandable why folks ask us all the time for this author at our bookstore, and we expect it won’t be long before someone options his excellent work for a series or a film. •••

o Manea of the Heiva i Kauai Ia Orana Tahiti steering committee said the two-day celebration of Tahitian culture that centered around dance, song and drumming is the perfect venue for halau practicing Tahitian to showcase its achievements and accomplishments. Halau from Honolulu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai brought life to the Kapaa Beach Park with a showcase of skills enhanced by the solo and group competitions. Hundreds of people flowed through the park,
capitalizing on shopping through the wares of crafters, many of whom come with Pacific Island and Tahitian wares. The festival was enhanced with the food offering of local-style Hawaiian grinds as well as exotic Bali cuisine. A silent auction featuring contributions from the community as well as vendors in the craft tent livened up the action along with cultural demonstrations ranging from fire knife dancing, lauhala weaving, and Tahitian and Pacific Island woodworking.
