young island musician will represent America before an international audience this spring. Jannik Evanoff of Puhi, an 8-year-old piano and violin virtuoso, won an international competition and will perform in Germany at the second International Music Festival for Young Musicians. On Feb. 5, he will join 30 young musicians from 17 different countries — including Austria, Israel, India, Poland and Russia — and perform at the famous Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. Evanoff is the only American to be showcased. “My mom told me I’m representing my country,” he said. Claudia Evanoff heard about the festival through a German Facebook group. “They were looking for young musicians, so I thought, ‘Let’s give a chance. You never know,’” she said. Evanoff began music instruction when he was three. He began learning violin, then started piano at the age of 5. “I think I wanted to start playing piano because my mother said it’s an excellent feeling — playing piano,” he said. There aren’t on-island opportunities for piano competition, but Evanoff gained stage experience at seasonal performances. His talent also shone through at annual American Piano Guild

Society performances, where he earned top ratings. At the age of 7, he enrolled in the Kauai Community College’s Continuing Education program and joined the KCC Orchestra, 2nd violin section. Evanoff has been under the tutelage of Helen Sina for violin, Monica Chung for piano and Sarah Tochiki for orchestra experience. “There are people who are enabling young kids like Jannik to be exposed to music at higher levels,” said his father, George Evanoff. “You can only teach for so long at the junior level.” The young musician plays regularly for residents at Regency Pua Kea Senior Center. His siblings are Anika (oldest sister), Alina, Nicklas and Hendrik. Anika, Nicklas and Alina play violin and are gifted, as well. “I especially like playing for my family and my little brother, Hendrik,” Jannik said. “He dances when I play.” Jannik displayed a gift for music growing up. George Evanoff said he has no musical talents, while Claudia Evanoff played piano. “But we both enjoy music and always have music playing at home,” George said. “As a young toddler, Jannik sang a lot, so we knew he enjoyed music as well.” SEE JANNIK, PAGE 6

Bamboo Sushi at Anchor Cove offers dishes that could feed a family the menu and picked out what to order. When my friend asked me what I was thinking of ordering, I said “everything. It all sounds amazing.” Our waitress offered us iced tea and water and also told us about a $2 Primo beer special. As tempting as that was, we eventually decided on two waters, the chicken cutlet loco moco and spicy Korean chicken with a side of kimchi fried rice. As our waitress wrote down our order, she told us “get ready to be full” and then walked away. At first, I thought, “come on. We ordered two plates. How much food could we have possible ordered?” She tried to warn us, but our eyes were larger than our stomachs.

My friend and I even joked about ordering the chicken katsu burger on the menu to share because that’s how hungry we were. We felt like we made the right decision based on our appetites. While the food didn’t disappoint, we disappointed ourselves with our pathetic efforts to do any real damage on the amount of food we had. The portions served Bamboo Sushi are no joke. At $12.99, the mountain of spicy Korean chicken alone is worth your while. With the $4 side of kimchi fried rice (worth it), my total was $17. The generous portion of kimchi fried rice was cooked to perfection with just enough spice that would make you take a couple of deep breaths before shovel-

ling more food into your system, but that wouldn’t stop you from enjoying your meal. Neighboring the rice was house made macaroni salad which tasted great and wasn’t too heavy, which was a good thing because the chicken was. A knife and fork job for sure, the chicken was cooked thoroughly and was very tender, taking little to no effort to chew. My friend’s chicken cutlet loco moco, which he could only finish half of before asking for a box to bring home with him, was delicious. With a healthy serving of crispy chicken pieces served on a bed of white rice underneath two sunny side eggs and a load of gravy, it’s perfect for breakfast or

lunch. Seriously, that’s how big this dish was. And at $14.99, it’s well worth the price. With the buttons on my aloha shirt ready to burst, I leaned back and surveyed the landscape of the restaurant. A full sake bar in the back of the restaurant with the kitchen behind it, the eatery had a couple families seated enjoying their lunch as the waiter talked story like they were old friends. Bamboo Sushi is a family restaurant with dishes that could feed the whole family and for the amount of quality food you’re getting, the prices are quite reasonable. Price range: $11-$30 Times: Open 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

ow! 2017! Time flies when you’re reading! This year is guaranteed to bring with it a lot of new things, and with many of us, that includes potentially new mindsets for our lives, overcoming obstacles be they internal or external. We recently got in this bestselling book, “Life’s Golden Ticket: A Story About Second Chances,” by Brendon Burchard, which exemplifies the very essence of what most of our intentions are when we make a New Year’s resolution: that there is an opportu-

The story follows a man who is weighted down by the events of his past and cannot see the possibilities before him. He is given a “golden ticket” to visit an abandoned amusement park, which somehow seems to come to life once he enters the grounds. His experiences there with the employees causes him to answer difficult questions, overcome obstacles, listen to lessons from those wiser than he, and take a hard look at himself and his life. For those who enjoyed Mitch Albom’s books, Richard Paul Evans’ nity before us to change ourselves, works, or even Dahl’s “Charlie and or our circumstances, for the better, The Chocolate Factory,” you will find no matter what is happening or has this novel as equally inspirational for happened in our lives. you or for someone in your life who Bonus! His parents encouraged their son to play. “We always thought that music was an essential part of a well-rounded education and we were lucky enough to find Helen Sina to give him violin lessons,” George said. “Since Claudia had also told him what a great feeling it was to play piano, he wanted to start lessons as soon as his hands were big enough to start.” He said they are just glad to have offered him the opportunity for violin and piano lessons that led to his natural abilities to shine through. “He has just taken off on his own,” George Evanoff said. “We encourage that he practices daily, but we don’t rigorously enforce it. We want him to enjoy his music. He wants the audience to feel the music.” When Jannik gets frustrated if he makes a few mistakes, his parents remind him of his favorite quote by Beethoven: “To play a wrong note is insignificant. To play without passion is inexcusable.” Jannik also likes a challenge. He likes getting ready for Helen Sina’s violin performances. He liked getting ready for the American Guild Piano Auditions. He liked preparing for Lois Ricciardi’s piano recitals. KCC Orchestra end of season performances had him very motivated for violin. When he heard he could audition internationally, he put himself to work and loved every bit of it, his dad said. “This is showing him that there is no limit to what music can offer him and that his hard work pays off,” George Evanoff said. To audition for the international competition, Evanoff played three piano pieces — two compositions by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, and one by Frederic Chopin — that he chose for being melodic, up-tempo and virtuosic. His recorded performance was submitted to judges via YouTube. His February program will consist of five compositions by Bartok on stage. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help defray costs of the trip to Germany. Two dress rehearsals and benefit fundraisers have also been scheduled at Island School Main Hall. The first is 6:30 p.m. Thursday and the second is 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

ART WALK

E

d Justus of the Talk Story Bookstore said the food vendors come earlier and earlier each week. “But people like food,” Justus said. “The food vendors come early, the people come early.” The weekly Friday Night Art Walk, hosted by the Historic Hanapepe Economic Alliance, runs from 5 to 9 p.m. every Friday and features more than 16 art galleries. Phil Worwa said he needs to cut his hair following a hectic holiday season where he dropped in on The Storybook Theater as Santa for lots of appearances, photos and talking story with keiki. “The 4-year-old girls are the killer,” he said. “They give you some of the strongest hugs there are. The little guys are eh, they could care less, but those little girls are serious. They give strong hugs.” Santa was replaced by David Leopold whose last sojourn to The Storybook Theater revealed a 281-year-old Russian coin. Leopold returns for more adventures on Jan. 29 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to talk about the fun of being a coin and stamp collector.
