Kauai Voices to perform at Hanapepe United Church of Christ Saturday

A

s Hanapepe United Church of Christ continues to celebrate its 125-year anniversary, Nancy Sato can’t wait for Kauai Voices to join in their festivities as they perform at the church hall for “The Magic of Music.” “We are looking forward to it because we are fans of the group,” said Sato, moderator and board member. “We’re bringing the music closer to the people.” KV will perform Saturday. Having decided late last year that she would like to organize a series of concerts, HUCC “music deacon” Ann Bjork spoke with the director of Kauai Voices, asking if he would be interested in doing a concert on Kauai’s westside. He agreed “I feel pretty good about it,” Bjork said. “We’ve got a nice dinner planned and Kauai Voices is quite excited about coming.” As guests listen to the choir members performance, they may recognize familiar tunes from Disney movies. “One of the movies they’re featuring is Snow White,” Sato said. “I’ve been to one of their performances and they are outstanding.” Some of the other songs the ensemble will sing include “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from the Lion King, “Step in Time” from Mary Poppins and “Be Our

Guest” from Beauty and the Beast. “We’re hoping that by bringing more musical groups to the Westside it will help the Westsiders go to concerts more easily,” Sato said. “It’s more of a convenience to have more concerts on the Westside so people don’t have to drive.” In addition to the per-

formance by KV, there will be dinner featuring teriyaki beef, grilled tofu, nishime, namasu, somen salad and lilikoi cake for dessert. Dinner is at 5:30, following by the concert. This will also be the first time KV will perform on Kauai’s Westside and as guests listened to KVs songs, Sato hopes they

Delicious eats For Father’s Day

F

ather’s Day is Sunday and to thank your dad for all his hard work, treat him to something special. How about a nice lunch at 9th Island Sports Bar & Grill with flat screen TVs and a chicken and rib combo, or a nice juicy Double Bubba with bacon from Bubba Burgers. Whatever your dad’s tastebuds, here are some places to take your dad out this Father’s Day. 9TH ISLAND SPORTS BAR & GRILL Barbecue is a favorite for many fathers out there and 9th Island Sports Bar & Grill has a Father’s Day special serving just that: BBQ Chicken & Rib Combo which includes garlic mashed potatoes on the side served with locally-sourced greens for $15.95. There are several flat screens to enjoy and watch your favorite team or TV show. “It’s clean, comfortable, and there’s great company,” said employee Shannon Crandell. 9th Island Sports Bar & Grill is at 4831 Kuhio Highway No. 206 in Kapaa. Their number is 822-7773. They’re open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday-Friday and

from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. PAU HANA BAR & GRILL Fish and chips is what’s on the table for this restaurant’s Father’s Day special. Their fish and chips are beer-battered, served with waffle fries and housemade tartar sauce. They are described as “mild, meaty, and delicious” by manager Shaughnessie Sturdivant. Sturdivant says that Pau Hana Bar and Grill is a more than ideal place to bring your father to enjoy a meal this weekend. “We’re definitely the perfect hideway for a man,” Sturdivant said. Pau Hana Bar & Grill can be found at 4831 Kuhio

Highway in Kapaa. Their number is 821-2900. Their hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday except Sundays, when they are open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. BUBBA BURGERS (POIPU, HANALEI, KAPAA) If you’re wondering what kind of burger to get for dad on Father’s Day, Bubba Burgers in Poipu has the answer for you: the Double Bubba with cheese, bacon, and a side of onion rings and French fries. The double bubba has two patties, and comes with mustard and onion, and a ketchup-based relish. Courtney Iwai who works at Bubba Burgers at The Shops at Kukuiula in Poipu, says one of the things that make getting a meal from Bubba’s on Father’s Day relaxing. “It’s easy to get fresh food to go and take food to the beach, and you wouldn’t have to wait too long,” Iwai said. This restaurant is at 2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka Road. Their hours are from 10:30 to 9 daily. Their phone is 742-6900.

KALAPAKI JOE’S (WAIMEA, LIHUE) A satisfying and hefty meal to serve up for Father’s Day that Kalapaki Joe’s recommends is the local-style New York steak. It includes grilled onions and teriyaki sauce, steamed white rice and garden salad. You can also get local style fried pork chops with cream of mushroom and sauteed seasoned veggies. You can find this restaurant at 9400 Kaumualii Highway in Waimea. Their phone is 338-1666.

ing Kamehameha V decreed Kamehameha Day as a national holiday for the Kingdom of Hawaii to honor the memory of Kamehameha, the king’s great grandfather, who in1810, united the Hawaiian Islands and became the first king. Once a celebration which included carnivals, fairs, and races, the observance continued following the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893, but without the fanfare. Prince Jonah Kuhio, born on Kauai, restored the Royal
