ix-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, composer and producer Daniel Ho returns to Kauai tonight for a performance benefiting Island School. The last time the Honolulu native treated the island to a night of his original Hawaiian music was in 2007. “Definitely, it’s been awhile, Ho said. “It’s one of the most beautiful islands, and I’m really happy to get a chance to get out there to perform again after quite a long time. The concert, part of a twodate “Magical Island Style Music tour, begins at 7 p.m. at Island School. It will be an intimate performance featuring a full repertoire of original songs, according to a release. “I’m going to play a little ukulele, slack key guitar and sing, Ho said. “I’m not sure if there’s a piano at the venue or not, but if there is, I do that, too. Earlier in the day, Ho will host a private ukulele workshop with students in grades 6-12, which will support Island School’s
annual “Arts Day event. “We’re just trying to encourage kids to get interested in music, he said. “I just try to keep it fun. Nothing serious. From his simple beginnings in Honolulu to his life amid the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, Ho has worked over the years as a musician, producer, singer, songwriter, arranger, composer, engineer and record company owner, according to his biography. The most compelling of these roles has been as a sixtime GRAMMY Award winning producer, featured slack key guitarist and artist in the “Best Hawaiian Music Album, “Best Pop Instrumental Album, and “Best World Music Album categories. His musical inclinations were apparent at an early age, and his passion for music led him to study composing, arranging and film scoring at the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He has shared his music as a soloist throughout the U.S, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Europe
and Australia. He has served as a cultural ambassador for U.S. Embassies; been featured with the Honolulu Symphony; performed as a keyboardist and guitarist for Grammy Awardwinning vocalist, Peabo Bryson; guest-lectured at Stanford University and Todai University; authored nine music books and toured as a clinician/advocate for Yamaha Guitars and Koaloha Ukulele, according to his biography. Tonight’s concert will include a raffle for a Koaloha Ukulele, valued at $900. “We just really want to encourage people to come out to the show, Ho said. “It will be fun. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $30 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at Kauai Music & Sound, in Kapaa, as well as in Lihue at Mac Made Easy and Island School. For more information about the artist, visit www.danielho. located at 1875 Kaumualii Highway, and can be reached by phone at 246-0233.

ocated in Kapaa, under the palms of the Kauai Coast Resort, the Hukilau Lanai is as fresh as it gets. Those concerned with organic, sustainable living would be impressed to know that Kauai’s own Hukilau Lanai came in third in the 2013 People’s Choice Nature’s Plate Award competition of the Nature Conservancy.
Serving Kauai’s community since 2002, the restaurant has a passion to keep it local. They strive to use ingredients and products from Kauai and the neighbor islands. Their handcrafted cuisine is made from scratch. Health conscious, their kitchen offers many options for vegetarians and gluten sensitive customers. During my visit, I started with a
complementary candied ahi appetizer, which includes a coffee spiced cubed ahi (yellow fin tuna) on a bed of white rice with a coconut chipotle sauce. The sauce was made with just the right amount of spices. Next, I tried a another appetizer, the sweet potato ravioli with roasted Okinawan sweet potato, feta cheese and lemongrass cream sauce for $9. The mixture of
sweet and salty from the potatoes and feta was surprisingly delicious. For the main course I had the ono, which is a marinated grilled Wahoo, coconut sambal kabocha pumpkin sauce, jasmine rice and tropical relish for $29. There is also the filet mignon, which is a char-grilled, center-cut beef tenderloin with Ulupalakua red wine sauce, with the potato of the
day for $32. All of the dishes just melt in the mouth and the portions were generous. The vegetarian lasagna stands out, too. “We use something local in each dish. We try to support the mom and pops’ local businesses. We believe in staying local, sustainable and green,” Chantry Williams, manager and 10-year employee of Hukilau

ooking for ocean-view dining with local ingredients, a great selection of wine and drinks? Look no further than the Hukilau Lanai. Happy hour at the poolside bar is from 3 to 5 p.m. From 11 a.m. to sunset the poolside bar serves salads, wraps and daily specials. The restaurant bar opens at 4:30 p.m. During my visit, I experimented with the Lilikoi Blossom Martini special with Passion Fruit Sky Vodka, pomegranate liqueur and Lilikoi syrup for $9. This drink is beautifully decorated with an orchid and is very strong and tasty. The mint and ginger beverage with house mint lime syrup, ginger ale and a candy ginger garnish for $4.
Server Sheylah Pigao with the Ono and Filet M.
Lanai said. The servers of Hukilau Lanai are friendly, professional and efficient. They take care to visit the table several times to be sure water glasses are filled and the food meets expectations. And as for the atmosphere and environment, it’s beautiful, but relaxed. It’s spacious inside, with a view of the picture-perfect lawn and ocean just beyond. There was plenty of conversation and laughter among the guests, even some folks singing happy birthday. A cool evening breeze added to the ambiance. The restaurant is also the venue of choice for Malama Pono’s annual Kauai Sings event. The Hukilau Lanai is a little hidden away, but easily found behind the Coconut MarketPlace. It is open for dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday and offers a special food and wine tasting menu from 5 to 5:45 p.m. If you want to sample their kitchen, this is the best time to go. You can get five food courses and five wines for $40, or just food for $28.
“Each course is an appetizer for one, with five of them, you will no doubt get a meal, Williams said.
VESSELINA JELIAZKOVA SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
This refreshment was thirst quenching and delicious. You can also order a specially made Bloody Mary for $8.50 with lime flavored vodka, a pickle garnish and rimed with an unusual salt and spices mixture. The Hukilau also has an extensive wine menu, which includes a list of 20 wines for $20 or more. “We offer 10 reds and 10 whites. You are sure to get great wine for a great price, Hukilau Lanai manager Chantry Williams said. Every day from 6 to 9 p.m. the restaurant hosts live music from local performers with styles such as jazz, contemporary Hawaiian, reggae, classic old Hawaiian and familiar Server Jessica Hudson with drinks. favorites.

omic book movies are increasingly, like Sandra Bullock in “Gravity, lost in space. Following the summer’s glumly bombastic “Man of Steel, which added a heavy dose of Krypton politics to Superman’s once pleasantly silly story, comes “Thor: The Dark World, in which Thor’s Asgard, a celestial home of gods floating somewhere in the universe, is the primary setting. Earth is an afterthought — just one of the “nine realms, albeit the one with Natalie Portman. Gone are the earthbound pleasures of a superhero amid us mortals. Such was the joy of the “Spider-Man movies and the first “Thor, when Chris Hemsworth’s lofty, hammer-wielding Norse warrior, exiled to Earth, so happily encountered a cup of coffee for the first time. As Marvel’s latest 3-D behemoth, “Thor: The Dark World isn’t so much a sequel as the latest plug-and-play into the comic book company’s blockbuster algorithm. It’s a reliably bankable formula of world-saving action sequences, new villain introductions and clever quips from women on the side, (and they, most assuredly, are always off to the side). The expansive Marvel universe is carefully stitched together across its many properties. “The Dark World (with director Alan Taylor of “Game of Thrones taking over for Kenneth Branaugh) follows “The Avengers in chronology and runs alongside the current, unremarkable ABC series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Each is referred to with something less than, say, the binding connections of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County. Instead we get cloying winks. The great city of New York, for example, is reduced to shorthand for the climactic battle in “The Avengers, as if we’re still so consumed
by that movie. Yes, we’re all very impressed it made so much money. Thor has spent the last two years restoring order to the nine realms of the cosmos, but just as peace settles, a previously locked-away dark energy called the Aether seeps out. It leaks into Portman’s astrophysicist, Jane Foster, awakening a previously vanquished species of Dark Elves, led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston). They would like to see the universe returned to complete darkness. Not a day person, this Malekith. This occurs as the nine realms are lining up in a rare convergence that makes them particularly susceptible to Aether-spread ruin. There’s not a lick of character to Malekith and his motives: He just wants to end all life. To save Life As We Know It, Thor seeks help from his duplicitous adoptive brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who has been imprisoned for killing thousands of humans at “New York. Hiddleston’s sneering Loki remains one of the finest Marvel antagonists, and — now with a starring role in three films — the franchise seems to value him (as it should) as much as his more heroic brother. When “The Dark World touches down on Earth, away from the “Clash of the Titans-style realms of gods, it’s considerably better. Along with Portman, returning is the sarcasm sidekick Kat Dennings (as Jane’s intern) and Stellan Skarsgard as discredited scientist Erik Selvig. Chris O’Dowd makes a welcome cameo as a blind date for a very reluctant Jane. The tone is far more amiable on Earth (London, to be specific, the site of the final showdown) than in Asgard, where Anthony Hopkins, Renee Russo and Idris Elba remain locked in goldenhued majesty.

KSA SMALL WORKS SHOW TO KICK OFF DARIN MORIKI TGIFR!DAY
T
he Kauai Society of Artists will accept submissions on Saturday for this year’s annual Small Works Show, which will run from Nov. 22 to Jan. 3. “This show is good for people who are new to art or maybe don’t feel as comfortable to enter a show, but we have many professionals who enter work, too,” KSA Show Chair Katy Zeidner said. “I have a soft spot for small works, because that’s where I started painting ... years ago. I think just the opportunity to show a little bit of your work gives a well-rounded presentation of what you and other artists can do.” The show is open to Kauai residents, who are KSA members
and over 18 years old. Non KSA members can become a member on Saturday, when they submit their work, Zeidner said. Artists are allowed to submit up to five pieces in any medium in the exhibition for an entry fee of $8 per work. Each submission must be no larger than 16 inches in any direction and made within the last three years. Previous works submitted in past shows or exhibits are not eligible for submission. “It’s not a juried show, so most pieces — unless there’s some basic problem with it like it doesn’t fit our parameters — will be exhibited,” Zeidner said. Judges Banana Patch Studios
owner Joanna Carolan, Angela Headley of Angela Headley Fine Art in Hanapepe and Ray Nitta of Westside Woodworks in Kekaha will present small awards prior to the show’s opening night on Friday, Nov. 22. KSA Secretary R. Eve Solomon said last year’s show featured 165 small works by 40 individual Kauai artists. Solomon said they are hoping to attract at least 50 to 65 artists this year. Entries will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, visit www. kauaisocietyofartists.org, send an email to artinkauai@gmail.com or call Zeidner at 634-6558.

undreds of people of all ages, from residents to visitors, gathered in Kapaa Saturday morning to watch the annual Veterans Day Parade as an early appreciation for the holiday on Monday. The small town spirit was alive as veterans and current servicemen and servicewomen, the Kapaa High School Band, army vehicles, floats, classic cars, Miss Kauai Veteran and even a troupe of tiny ponies and tall horses made their way on Kuhio Highway through Old Kapaa Town. The parade started at Panihi Road at 10 a.m., and stretched all the way to Kapaa Beach Park, where the celebration continued with public speakers, ono grinds and musical entertainment. The parade’s theme was “Honoring our Hawaii National Guard.
