NUKOLII — Nialani Green, Daphne Sanchez, Makena Pascua, and Juno Apalla will be garbed in terno on Sept. 16 at Aqua Kauai Beach Resort. But the quartet will also don costumes designed by Barbara Green, president of the Kauai Filipino Women’s Club, as they assume roles of “Kauai’s Dream Girls” at the 52nd annual Kauai Filipino Women’s Club Terno Ball. “The entertainment is very unique,” Green said. “These four young women all had leading female roles in productions held on Kauai. I spoke with them and they all came together to combine the power of their talent and perform as ‘Kauai’s Dream Girls.’” Apalla had the leading female role in “Miss Saigon,” Pascua portrayed Mrs. Pott in “Beauty and the Beast,” Sanchez assumed the role of Lily in “Carnival,” and Nialani Green, a junior at Kauai High School, portrayed Ellie in “Legally Blonde.” Green also designed and created costumes for the girls to use in their presentation at the gala signature scholarship fundraising event. ana from Honolulu and Jemere Morgan, who is the son of Gramps Morgan, the band’s keyboard player and vocalist. The last stint in Hawaii for the reggae band was a performance in Honolulu in 2014, and band members are looking forward to once again feeling the island vibes. “Hawaii has a culture all its own, and it’s you being true to your islands and the whole Polynesian culture,” Morgan said. “It’s that same island energy that we get from any other island in the world, whether it’s in the Indian Ocean, Caribbean or any other place in the world. It’s that island essence that we have as island people. That’s what Hawaii and the people of Hawaii have.” Morgan Heritage is made up of five siblings, who grew up watching their father, Denroy Morgan, do music. Denroy, known for his 1981 hit record “I’ll Do Anything For You,” was instrumental in the band’s formation. “We were highly influenced by music from a young age,” Peetah said. “Our father saw the talent
in us and saw each one gravitating to our respected instruments.” The Morgans dropped their first album in 1994 and started with eight members. By 1997, the band shrunk to five and released the album, “Protector of Jah.” “This is what we know. This is who we are,” Peetah said. “We have become the music that we play. Everything about Morgan Heritage is the culture, is the essence of the islands, is the essence of Rastafari, the essence of unity amongst humanity.” For the Morgans, reggae is more than music. It is life, culture, spiritual and social inspiration. “It brings all nations of people together, all cultures,” Peetah said. “It’s a world music. It’s a music that caters to the essence of humanity. When you hear it, you feel love moving through you. The essence of the music is love and unity.” Tickets for Morgan Heritage are $35 and $40 the day of the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show opens at 8 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at http:// www.bampproject.com/.

emember those fun scratch and sniff books? Well, they are making a comeback! And this one is for adults! Enter “The Essential Scratch and Sniff Guide to Becoming a Whiskey Know-It-All” by Richard Betts. Yeah, you read that right! Presented in the traditional board book style with all the fun scratch and sniff “spots”, the history and methods of production on the different types of whiskeys are both entertaining

as well as educational. For instance, we were immediately fascinated to learn that the same ingredients that make beer also make whiskey! Huh! Or did you know that whiskey in many countries is aged in old wine or whiskey barrels instead of new oak barrels like in the United States? These subtle differences are part of the nuances of their flavors. It is exciting to be learning about the varieties of whiskeys, especially now when there are endless boutique artisans cropping up all over the world. Some of the “beginner’s guides” often seem too thick of a book to even start with, but the “Essential Scratch & Sniff ” sums up the entirety in a way that even those with only a passing curiosi-

ty can learn a lot from. It helps too that the New York Times best-selling author, Richard Betts, (also the author of “The Essential Scratch and Sniff Guide to Becoming a Wine Expert: Take a Whiff of That!) is actually a Master Sommelier who passed his exam on the first test. This means the author certainly “nose” his stuff! What’s even more fun, other than the variety of scents we get to sample from scratching and sniffing, are the illustrations. They are lively and colorful. Heck, this book even comes with a map! So get scratching, educate your palate, and enjoy! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.
