any couples go out for a night on the town in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Romance typically prevails on such nights, but there’s more to planning Valentine’s Day dates than just roses and chocolate. The following are a few tips to make sure this year’s Valentine’s Day date night goes off without a hitch. ◗ Make a dinner reservation: Restaurants fill up on Valentine’s Day, so make a reservation no matter how frequently you may patronize the place you want to go to. Nothing derails a dinner date more quickly than being told there are no tables available. ◗ Cancel the reservation if you must: If plans change and you cannot make it, be respectful of the restaurant and call to cancel your reservation. No-shows cost restaurants substantial amounts of money, especially on popular dining out nights like Valentine’s Day.
◗ Arrange for transportation: If you plan to open a bottle of wine or make a champagne toast while out on the town, arrange for a car service to pick you up after dinner or use public transportation. Drinking and driving is dangerous, and local law enforcement may even have checkpoints set up to protect residents from drivers who might have celebrated a bit too much. ◗ Bring cash: Few restaurants remain cash-only, but bring cash with you anyway just in case your

card won’t swipe correctly. You don’t want to embarrass your date by leaving the restaurant to go get some cash, so prepare for this in advance. ◗ Review the menu: If you or your date has special dietary needs, peruse a restaurant’s menu before making a reservation so you know there’s something for both of you. If Valentine’s Day is a first date, ask your date in advance if he or she has any food allergies or dietary restrictions. — Metro Creative Content

oloring outside the lines is exciting, but learning how to color inside the lines can be just as fun — especially when there’s booze involved. Wine and canvas will be the theme at the Princeville Fish Eye Gallery on 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday as the business hosts is second “Paint and Pupus.” Artist Richard Whitman will be giving lessons. “Last year we had people from all over — from Kekaha all the way to Princeville where the gallery is located,” said owner Tom Green. “We had a max of 10 people last year and we were maxed out.” This year, the event has been structured to accommodate about 15 people. It’s for everyone interested in learning a little something new and unwinding at the same time. “We could probably do more depending on how many people sign up,” Green said.

The evening costs $40, and that includes canvas, paint and brushes, snacks and alcohol. “Last year we had some cookies, and we made some homemade stuff. Then I went and bought wine and beer and water for everyone,” Green said. He started Paint and Pupus as a way to promote local artists and connect them with the community. “The whole idea behind my gallery was to help local artists in sales, but also use the gallery itself for events and promotions for their
works or a special unveiling of a piece,” he said. Students who attend Paint and Pupus are given a stack of photos, taken by Green, to use as inspiration. Students can choose one photo, or a conglomeration of a few, to replicate on their own canvas. “Richard goes around and gives advice on coloring and different techniques,” Green said. Reservations are recommended due to limited seating. For questions or to book at seat, call 631-9645.

f you’re one of those people — and I’m with you — who roll your eyes when handed a pair of 3D glasses at the multiplex, wondering if all this rigmarole is REALLY necessary, then take heart: The lovely, color-popping visuals in “Kung Fu Panda 3” are well worth those darned glasses. And the evocative DreamWorks Animation visuals are accompanied by just enough heart, witty dialogue and kid-friendly humor — anything about gorging on dumplings, for example — to make this an all-around extremely satisfying third installment in the popular series. Like a well-made dumpling, it’s not too heavy but not too light, has the right amount of spice, and leaves one with some appetite for the next time. Much of the appeal of the

‘THE GOOD OLD DAYS’… OR WERE THEY? CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
“T
he good ol’ days…” It’s the iconic nostalgic statement that nearly everyone has heard when someone is lamenting over the “current state of affairs.” We might have even said these words ourselves. It’s understandable, given the inundation of what the media portrays daily. There are many who glorify what life must have been like before industry and capitalism “took over” and dream of going back to the “simple life” of our ancestors, living how they lived. But was it really better back then? Author and historian Otto L. Bettmann points out in his book, “The Good Old Days— They Were Terrible!” that the answer across the board is “No!” Covering a wide swath of matters, such as air, traffic, housing, rural life, work, crime, food and drink, health, education, travel, and leisure, one learns very quickly that our recent ancestors had it pretty rough, which is an understatement! People talk a lot today about income inequality, but it was far worse a
century ago! Or imagine fearing going to the hospital because most who went in never came out! Or having countless police officers selected not for their integrity but due solely to their politics. Or living in housing with a large family with no windows, no water, and not even a bathroom or an outhouse. Imagine being injured at work, no longer able to work, no labor union to support you, and no way you would ever be able to win in court (nor even having the money to sue with)! The sheer volume of atrocities like this and more that the vast majority of people
had to endure humbled us as we leafed through these revealing pages. So, despite all the failings that our modern world has, we truly are living in the “best of times!” ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are the owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

END YOUR VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER WITH A ROMANTIC MOVIE
C
ouples celebrate Valentine’s Day in many different ways. For some the idea of dinner out followed by a stroll arm-inarm seems the epitome of romance, while others may want to go out dancing or engage in a favorite hobby. Valentine’s Day also can be a romantic endeavor if a couple chooses to spend time at one with each other watching a romantic movie. The following are a handful of love-inspired movies that
can add a special something to Valentine’s Day festivities. ◗ The Notebook: Author Nicholas Sparks has a way of taking the everyday experiences in a person’s life and making them relatable and heartbreaking in a pluck-at-your-heartstrings sort of way. His novel “The Notebook” won the hearts of many and seemed a natural to be adapted to film. Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the movie
illustrates how love can last through the years and even survive an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. ◗ The Proposal: In order to remain in the country, a demanding New York-based book editor (Sandra Bullock) asks her brow-beaten assistant (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her. Their tumultuous relationship involves a trip to Alaska to meet his family. ◗ An Affair to Remember: Romantic melodramatic master Cary Grant

falls in love with Deborah Kerr aboard a cruise ship while they are traveling with other people. They agree to meet at the top of the Empire State Building in six months if they have ended their relationships and are ready to commit to each other. Grant makes it to the rendezvous spot, but an injured Kerr never shows as Grant assumes she has rejected the proposal. ◗ Say Anything: In pursuit of a woman he believes is out of his social league, Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) creates hope for the underdog in us all. The movie inspired teens to raise their boom box radios over their heads and blast romantic tunes to illustrate their love. ◗ The Wedding Singer: This quirky movie about a wedding singer who falls for a banquet waitress highlights the importance of loving each other for what makes you unique. ◗ Once: Attraction between the main characters comes by way of creative musical collaboration. Music proves to be an aphrodisiac, making the film and the song “Falling Slowly” from its score so popular. This romantic tale helped take the film from the big screen to the Broadway stage. ◗ West Side Story: “West Side Story” is yet another homage to “Romeo and Juliet.” But the film made Shakespeare’s tragic love story relatable to audiences of the 1960s. ◗ My Best Friend’s Wedding: Julianne (Julia Roberts) is called on to
be the “best man” for her friend’s (Dermot Mulroney) wedding. Only when the wedding planning is underway does Julianne realize she is in love with her friend and needs to get him to fall for her instead. ◗ Never Been Kissed: A reporter goes undercover at a high school to discover something controversial and ends up being the subject of her story when she falls in love with her English teacher. ◗ Harold and Maude: A man in his twenties and a much older woman begin a romantic relationship and challenge social norms along the way. ◗ Annie Hall: Winner of four Academy Awards, “Annie Hall” follows a comedian who is trying to maintain his relationship with a woman.
◗ Bridget Jones’ Diary: A modern adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” the movie tells the tale of a self-conscious woman who finds love in a man that seems to be her polar opposite. ◗ Ten Things I Hate About You: Filmmakers reinvented “The Taming of the Shrew” in this teen comedy starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. ◗ Casablanca: No romantic movie list would be complete without this wartime drama. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are in top form in this movie of chance meetings. ◗ The Princess Bride: Girl meets boy, girl detests boy, girl truly loves boy, and then girl loses boy. This fairy tale shares the purity of true love and happily ever after. — Metro Creative Content

But one of his co-stars, Jim Ballantine who plays Vanya, offers another theory about why Roosara is ready for the curtain to rise. “He spends most of the time without any clothes on, ” Ballantine said, smiling It’s that type of subtle

by Faith Harding, presented by the Kauai Community Players and plays for three weekends. Performances are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays. The story follows middle-aged siblings Vanya (Ballantine) and Sonia (Karen Firl), who share a home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra (Grayson Brannen), who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina (Melissa D’Anna). Ballantine described his character as someone who is passive, has given up and is in the twilight years. Yet, laughter and smiles find their way through the tough times. “For such a funny comedy, it has a lot of really moving moments,” he said. Harding, who directed “True West,” in 2010 and “Closer” in 2014, said Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a poignant look at technology, age, how generations relate to each other and universal themes of siblings. “Durang’s whole take on the modern world and what has been lost from the past is also in this play,” Harding said. “He brilliantly puts it together. So all the cynicism and the sarcasm that is the
humor in this play sort of melts away at the end and there’s hope and there’s heart there. That’s what I love about it.” Bekeart’s Masha is a successful actress whose career is winding down, yet she tries to cling to her youth. “Over the course of the play, she comes to terms with age and life’s changes,” Photos by Bill Buley / The Garden Island Bekeart said. an aging actress now. There aren’t as many roles but the ones there are, are really interesting.” Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, she said, “has that wonderful combination of comedy and some would say, the human condition” as it looks at humanity and how people deal with life’s illusions. Yet, above all, it is extremely funny, Bekeart said. “You will laugh all night long and will also walk out of here moved by the characters and you will haveT N a greater understanding what it’s like to get old in this rapidly changing world of ours,” she said. Harding’s cast includes two veterans of the stage, Bekeart and Firl, and newcomers, Ballantine, Brannen, Roosara and D’Anna. “I’m very excited about that,” she said. “I couldn’t ask for a better cast. They’re funny and they’re working very hard.” She believes the production will be a hit and encourages the community to see it. “You’re going to laugh out loud and you will go away with great feelings of hope and that you can look at your own life and your own family and examine what’s happening through these characters,” Harding D said. The play is about two hours. There will be a 15-minute intermission. For tickets, go to www. kauaicommunityplayers.org or call Brown Paper Tickets, (800) 838-3006. ive hula dancers from Kobe, Japan traveled to Kauai to present one number Saturday during the Leilani Rivera Low hula hoike at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall. “We dance in Japan,” said Rika Terashini, one of the five dancers. “We are here for five days, but we only dance to one number tonight.” The annual hoike or exhibition of Leilani’s Hula Halau students was embelished by the addition of vendors and
local-style food. “We enjoyed the steel guitar festival, today at the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach,” said Taraya Middleton of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. “We came to do the week-long Beamer family music camp. The hoike just happened to be during our free time.” Leilani Rivera Low and her husband Darryl also operate the Ka U‘i O Ka ‘Aina Cultural Center in the Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa.
