Tis the season for lights Waimea Lighted Parade Saturday
T
he streets of Waimea will be filled with more than 30 lighted floats on Saturday as the 21st annual Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade welcomes the holiday season. “It’s just a small-town parade and everything is from within Waimea,” said Esther Estes, event organizer. “The (West Kauai Business and Professional Association)
wants it to be the last chance of the year that Waimea businesses can make money.” Floats from Waimea businesses, PMRF, DuPont Pioneer, and others from around the island will be lined with lights and will parade down the center of Waimea town starting at 6 p.m. Marching groups and music will also be part of the parade. Estes said the Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade doesn’t ever have an overall theme, that’s left up to the individual floats. Usually
Nativity themes dominate the parade. The parade is about an hour. “It’s really a lot of fun and a lot of people come in,” Estes said. Restaurants and grocery stores will be open a little later that day. Estes said that most people usually show up early on Saturday to snag a good spot for the parade, but some spectators claim their territory as early as Friday. “Friday morning people

are reserving their spots along the street,” Estes said. “Nobody takes their chair, everybody knows that’s where they’re going to sit at the parade.” The absolute latest Estes recommends arriving in Waimea for the parade is 4:30 p.m. Saturday — and at that point she predicts that you’ll be battling traffic. “It’s just like the Lihue parade in that lots of people come out,” she said. After the last twinkling float clears Waimea’s town center, an after party will

kick off at Hofgaard Park, featuring country music by Los Kauaianos. There will be free snacks available. “All the businesses in Waimea donate snacks and drinks for the after party,” Es-
tes said. “So there are cookies and coffee, things like that.” The entire event is free. “Come out and enjoy the parade, enjoy the music, and support Waimea town,” Estes said.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN THE HEART OF HANALEI BAY
f Hoku Gordines, manager over Brennekes Beach Broiler, can get just 10,868 more of his Famous Mai Tais out to his customers, he may have accomplished something no other restaurant has ever accomplished. That’s how many more Mai Tais he needs to reach the 1 million sold mark. For the past 31 years, Brenneke’s has been selling Mai Tais right on the beach to people from all over the world, he said. Gordines estimated that by 2016, someone in his restaurant will walk away with the grand prize of not only having drank the one millionth Mai Tai, but an array of prizes that include a two-night stay at Koa Kea Resort in Poipu Beach. “It’s world famous because of this,” Gordines said smiling as he pointed to an open window that displayed palm trees and a view of Poipu Beach. “You drink Mai Tais, you go home and you tell your friends.” That’s what Brenneke’s

alike,” Gordines said. “We are consistent and we just happened to have a cool location.” But Gordines said Mai Tais and happy hours aren’t all Brenneke’s offers. Aside from the beach views, as it sits right next to Poipu Beach Park, the dishes are to die for. Just ask server Falcon Valeria. He recommends every pupu item on the happy hour menu. But if happy hour pupus aren’t your thing and you’re looking for a full-on meal, enjoy lunch or

a light dinner, too. Brenneke’s lunch and light dinner menu includes classic American favorites such a Burger Deluxe and a Chicken Breast Sandwich but also includes local Hawaiian dishes like Ahi Sandwich and BBQ Kalua Pork Sandwiches. Prices range between $13-18. “Even the veggie burgers are delicious,” Valeria said. Brenneke’s is a family owned business and Gordines’ 64-year-old father, Bob French, comes in as much as possible. And his grandfather before him, Clyde French, held the business once, too. Even

Gordines’ children Lilia, Reyna and Xavier stop in from time to time. “That’s just how life is here on Kauai and for me here at the restaurant,” Gordines said. “It’s not so much that
they come and visit me all the time, it’s just so family oriented. It’s a unique place. The people in the restaurant, the location, our surroundings in beautiful Kauai that make it so unique.”

andi Kato-Klutke of the Kauai County Farm Bureau said activity was high when the doors opened to the annual Holiday Fair Saturday at the Kauai Community College. “We were busy,” Kato-Klutke said. “Most of the items we had sold out quickly. There were so many people waiting, we opened early and the people came in.” The traditional farmers market was enhanced with the addition of Kauai Made and Kauai Grown vendors to help shoppers fill their holiday shopping lists with bargains galore and appetites being whetted by
a circle of food trucks, some being in addition to the regular vendors. Melissa Sugai of the Kauai Made and Kauai Grown program said visitors made short work of the scavenger hunt forms and the shopping bag premiums went quickly. Visitors armed with the forms sought out vendors listed on the form and their successful finds were rewarded with a qualifying signature. A completed form earned a premium. The next event will be the Garden Fair hosted by the Kauai County Farm Bureau in the Spring at the Kauai Community College.
