Island School’s four choral ensembles prep for spring concert

I

sland School’s four choral ensembles, together comprising the Island School Chorus, take center stage at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center on Wednesday to present their eighth annual spring concert. “Turn the World Around” showcases over 115 students in grades four to 12 paying tribute to folk songs from around the globe. “Folk songs often seem so simple at first hearing but can be lovely and deeply moving when one really listens,” said Philip Steinbacher, conductor at Island School since the chorus’s inception in 2006 remarks. “As an

educator, it’s important for me to encourage students to explore new and unfamiliar music. The melodies of various cultures may at first seem odd, the harmonies unusual, and the language, of course, unfamiliar. The sentiments, however, are universal. Folk music unites us because it demonstrates that, though different on the surface, the things that matter in the truest sense, like home, family, love, beauty, friendship, and peace, are valued by all of humanity. Things that at first appear different can actually be very SEE CONCERT, PAGE 6

Preserving Hawaiian history Mural of Pele to dominate a wall in The Hilton Garden Inn

W

hen Lisa Haude thought about how to tie Hawaiian culture in with the new design at The Hilton Garden Inn in Wailua, she decided the only way to do it was to bring in an artist from Hawaii. For Haude, the founder of Paradigm Design Group, the search ended when she found Danielle Zirkelbach, an Oahu artist with a passion for Kauai’s culture. “There’s this one piece she has done that we love — it’s the birth of the islands out of fire and water,” Haude said. “With her blessing we

had that piece recreated by artisans in Mexico. They converted it into a mosaic wall.” Zirkelbach said the mural is of Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire, who is traditionally both creator and destroyer of earth. Haude said Zirkelbach’s rendition of that scene inspired more than just one wall. “That started brainstorming of how we wanted the building to look – the feel and the colors,” Haude said. In addition to the color scheme, Zirkelbach has a few other pieces of art sprinkled throughout the resort — including a piece

featuring the island’s King Kamehameha. Haude said she also incorporated other Hawaiian elements into the hotel’s design, like traditional tattoo designs on koa wood headboards. “Being part of this redesign is more important to me than I can express,” Zirkelbach said. “I have been called to the islands all my life. I am not Hawaiian, but you don’t have to be to love the land and the culture — this land gave me so much, I have to give back.” Zirkelbach grew up in Florida and went to Florida

Southern College on a soccer scholarship. She said she went to college to be a doctor, but “that road was longer than I was willing to travel in that direction,” so she earned a bachelor’s degree in science, as well as a bachelor’s in fine arts. When she graduated, she worked for design firms in Florida until she teamed up with Eastern Surf Magazine as a graphic designer and fell in love with surfing. That’s when she abandoned her soccer career and threw herself into the waves. That’s also when she got a Danielle Zirkelbach’s painting of King Kamehameha is being superimposed onto wallpa- waitressing job to earn money to move to Hawaii. per that will cover a 40-foot wall in the resort’s meeting room.

“It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t always beautiful. It was scary, far from home, different culture, and a different life I had to make many adjustments for,” Zirkelbach said. “But I feel that I allowed the spirit of Hawaii to change me for the best and she always gives back to me with love and protection.” Since then, she’s continued her love of surfing and found the love of her life. “I found myself here, I lost myself here, and I fell in love with my husband and I fell in love with my purpose here,” Zirkelbach said. She said her favorite medium is painting and her second

favorite is surfing. Inspiration comes in the form of her husband, the ocean, and those self-made underdogs who “never give up or let people bully them out of doing what they were born to do.” When it comes to her art being displayed in The Hilton Garden Inn, Zirkelbach said it’s hugely important. “The Hawaiian culture is suffering, they are fighting to keep their rights, their land, and to keep Hawaii preserved for its native people,” Zirkelbach said. “I have an overwhelming urge to use my talents to do my part in preserving the culture. Hawaiian or not, it’s our responsibility.”

CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

A

loha readers! Most people have heard of the Narnia series by C. S. Lewis. Even the casual movie-goer is likely to have seen at least one of the “Narnia” films. But what many may not know is that C. S. Lewis was a prolific author of mostly non-fiction. In fact, he wrote almost exclusively about Christianity! Who would have guessed that the man who brought us into the realm of outrageous fantasy and copious magic with Narnia was also a devout Christian? Interestingly enough, it turns out Lewis used to be atheist, and it was J.R.R. Tolkien (master writer of the epic “Lord of the Rings” fantasy saga) who converted him to Christianity! It is evident that this effect that

Tolkien had on Lewis was profoundly impactful, as Lewis ended up becoming one of the preeminent modern day Christian writers of the 20th century. “Mere Christianity” is in many ways his magnum opus of Christian non-fiction. To this day, “Mere Christianity” is considered one of the most important books on the Christian faith, and still a bestseller.

“Mere Christianity” is a compilation of three talks that Lewis gave on BBC radio between 1942-1944. The broad topics he covered were “The Case for Christianity,” “Christian Behaviour,” and “Beyond Personality,” originally published afterward as individual pamphlets. Organized into a simple, well-flowing, and articulate read, “Mere Christianity” really provides a considered analysis of what the common values of being a Christian means, regardless of one’s sect. Many in Western society are raised culturally Christian, but Lewis challenges the reader to examine themselves in what being or thinking Christian actually means, and what lifestyle comes from truly living it. Even for non-Christians, Lewis presents a welcoming conversation that can appeal to all mindsets. The more we learn, the better we are! ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

similar. Isn’t now a great time for students to learn — and adults to remember — that this is so?” The concert’s title, Turn the World Around, comes from the title of a piece written in the 1970s by singer Harry Belafonte, who had this to say about his song: “… all of us are here for a very, very short time. In that time that we’re here, there really isn’t any difference in any of us, if we take time out to understand each other. The question is: Do I know who you are, or who I am? Do we care about each other? Because if we do, together we can turn the world around.” “I hope in some small way our concert can help turn the world around,” Steinbacher said. “I’m hoping people gain some self understand and in turn be open to understanding others a little more clearly through gaining an appreciation of this wonderful music. People from all around the world are making beautiful, fun, charming, lovely music! It’s an honor to be able to share just some of that at our concert.” Turn the World Around is accompanied by Rose Alfiler. Tickets, $10 for adults and $5 for youth, are are available at the Island School office.
