Or how about a movie?
Or would you like to root for keiki in a surfing contest? Whatever it is, you’ll have some tough decisions to make. The good news is, no matter what you pick, you win. Here’s what’s happening: ◗ The Kauai Veterans Museum is presenting “A Night at The Museum — a Broadway show to salute Armed Forces — at the Kauai Veterans Center. It will include reenactment of scenes from the popular TV series, “MASH. It is 5:30 p.m. to midnight. The fifth annual fundraiser will include dinner, music and

Great food, service, views await at the Bull Shed
L
et’s cut to the chase. The Bull Shed delivers what you want when you eat out in Hawaii: Great food at a fair price, friendly, fast service and ocean views to die for. It has been around for more than four decades and it’s clear why it’s been so successful. Regulars love it and visitors keep finding their way to this popular restaurant at 4-796 Kuhio Highway. It’s got an old-time feel to it. Nothing overly fancy or decorated. It’s fine dining, but at the same time it’s relaxed and casual. Folks come in dressed to kill, while others are wearing T-shirts, shorts and slippers. It’s conversational, yet still quiet and calm. The setting is just right. I went there with my wife and friends Saturday evening, when there was live music, and as expected, came away fat and happy. You will, too. The portions are large enough

BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY to send anyone home feeling full. The steak kabob I ordered, at $24, is a good deal. It includes pieces of New York steak on a bamboo skewer and grilled to order, in my case, a perfect medium, with a medley of crisp vegetables. My wife went with the teriyaki chicken beast, which is marinated and grilled in their housemade teriyaki. And at $18, you couldn’t ask for a better meal, especially when you toss in the fact that we had the ocean right outside your window, offering a spectacular sunset view. These prices, in case you were wondering, include the salad bar, which is stocked with fresh lettuce, vegetables and dressings. But don’t eat too much now, so as not to ruin your dinner.
TGIFR!DAY | June 23, 2017 | 5
My friend ordered the seared ahi, which is seasoned with the Bull Shed’s blackening spice and lightly seared on both sides, topped with housemade wasabi aioli. He ordered it rare, and it was. The service was excellent. Our waitress was spot-on with taking orders, delivering the food and checking in to be sure everything was OK before dropping off the tab. When we sat a little longer after dinner just to chat a bit, she didn’t even make us feel hurried to clear the table, even though there was a wait. Perhaps the most popular item, for reasons that are perfectly clear considering the name of this eatery, is the
prime rib. It’s a favorite, slowly cooked and mildly seasoned and usually sells out, so if you want it, you might want to consider arriving early. It comes in the Bull Shed Cut, with bone, ($38), and the regular cut, no bone, ($32). Seating starts at 5 p.m. and there’s generally a lineup because folks like the tables with the oceanside view. Other items that are sure to please are the filet mignon ($36), garlic tenderloin ($36), baby back ribs, ($27) and a full rack of lamb ($49). The lobster tail dinner ($39), steak and lobster ($49), and chicken and shrimp ($29) are worth it. Appetizers include waipouli scallops ($17), potato skins ($8)
and artichoke dip ($9). And keiki are welcome, with a menu of keiki entrees, like teriyaki chicken ($9) that includes a trip to the salad bar. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention, again, the view. The Bull Shed sits almost on top of the ocean. There really isn’t a bad view in the house. From our table, with the window open, you could hear and feel the spray of crashing waves. Even if you miss out on one of the premier spots, don’t fret. The elevated dining tables and seats offer an equally wonderful view. On nights you add in a full moon, it’s magic. You might not notice, however. That’s how good the food and service are at the Bull Shed.

most of us may know little about other than being used in poke or sushi rolls, these eight-legged master contortionists have revealed to the world their striking caliber of intelligence — and differences of personality depending on their regional locale. “The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness,” by Sy Montgomery has become an unexpected bestseller in our bookstore—being bought by a wide variety of customers of all backgrounds. We understand why!
“Soul of an Octopus” entertainingly and humorously challenges our perceptions of what we think we know about life — what quantifies “awareness.”
Sy Montgomery takes us on a journey of her experiences with octopuses and conversations with scientists that culminated in this enlightening book, from her first time feeling the suckers of an octopus on her skin to coming to understand the problem-solving abilities of an octopus as it finds ways to move past many impediments. Life is beautiful, in all its many forms, and “Soul of an Octopus” might get you to look at the rest of the beings you share this world with in a whole new way! concussed serenity sets in somewhere in the middle of the ceaseless ballet of metal and machismo in Michael Bay’s “Transformers: The Last Knight.” Freed of concerns like plausibility or story, you can simply gape

blow after blow rains down upon them. Dazed by the unrelenting digital demolition on screen, thoughts go through your head like: ‘Can this movie literally crush me?’ ‘Is death by Dolby possible?’ and ‘You know, it’s really time to get the car washed.’ By the time you’ve scraped yourself off the floor after all 149 minutes of the 3-D “The Last Knight,” you feel the need to compensate for the sheer gluttony of destruction, of unrelenting bigness. the fate of the planet hangs in the balance, but his real battle is conquering you, the moviegoer. And make no mistake about it. He’s gonna win. “Transformers: The Last Knight, is, if nothing else, a pummeling. The fifth in the franchise and second in the “Wahlberg Years” (Mark Wahlberg replaced Shia LaBeouf ), “The Last Knight” continues the Hasbro toy adaptations and expands further into the alien machines’ mythology. nothing but Transformer technology. Centuries later, the continual arrival of Transformers on Earth connects to these ancient events. There are crucial objects — Merlin’s staff, a talisman that attaches itself to Wahlberg’s Autobot-defending Cade Yeager — that bring constantly arriving Transformers, plummeting in space ships from the sky, and eventually, the vengeful leader of their home planet, Cybertron. With Optimus Prime away on holiday (or searching for something or other back on Cyberton), the human population has turned against the Transformers. One can see why. They’re swaggering, bickering bags of bolts who eschew their best parlor trick (transforming into cars and trucks) for avalanches of ammo. There is, for a moment, a touch of metaphor for immigrant empathy in their unfortunate status, but it quickly gets buried in the mounting debris.
That is, at any rate, what I could make out. Stonehenge has something to do with the plot, too, as does Anthony Hopkins, who plays the latest in a long line of guardians to these mysteries. There’s also an Oxford scholar (Laura Haddock) skeptical of Round Table legend, and, briefly, an elite scientist (Tony Hale) whose insistence on solving intergalactic problems with silly things like physics is, here, a joke. “Transformers” is like the anti-”Martian”: brawn over brains. After two and half hours of pulverizing action, there’s nothing to do but raise the white flag, admit defeat, and shudder as you pass the theater for the latest “Cars” movie. No more, please. “Transformers: The Last Knight,” a Paramount Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, brief sexual humor and language.” ••• Associated Press
