Magic umbrellas and chimney sweeps Hawaii Children’s Theater brings ‘Mary Poppins’ to Kauai

Erin Gaines, as Mary Poppins, breaks up a fight between Talon Ahnan, playing Bert and Marissa Kennedy, playing Mrs. Cory.

f you’re looking for a spoonful of sugar to sweeten your holiday season, check out the Hawaii Children’s Theater’s performance of Mary Poppins that opens Nov. 13. “Last year we had a 12-foot high dragon for Shrek and this year we have a set that fully comes apart and goes back together for one scene,” said Debra Blachowiak, who is on the children’s theater board of directors and is producing this year’s show. “There’s lots of magic in it.” The cast will be putting on nine public performances and four school-specif-

ic performances until Nov. 29. Blachowiak said people can expect to see the same general story as the popular Mary Poppins movie, but the play isn’t exactly the same as the film. “This show is going to be really fun because there’s magic and theatrical flying,” Blachowiak said. “The costumes are stunning — we even have the iconic parrot umbrella.” Mitchell Ouye from Lihue is the man behind the costuming and many of the specialty props. He said the audience can expect magic at every turn. “The whole production has been a

huge challenge,” Ouye said. “There’s over 40 people in the cast and most of them have more than one costume.” There’s a doll in the musical, for example, that comes to life, so Ouye needed a regular-sized doll as a prop, and a costumed actor to play the doll later in the show. He turned to his specialty costume designer, Esther Manning, for help. “I made a life-sized doll suit,” Manning said. “I just made the regular sized doll and used it as a model, then I created the costume.” SEE MAGIC, PAGE 6

K

ara Goldstein loves breakfast — any time of day. At 6 p.m. on a recent Monday, she headed to McDonald’s for hash browns and a sausage McMuffin, something she wouldn’t

have been able to order for dinner prior to Oct. 6, when Hawaii’s McDonald’s restaurants started serving breakfast around the clock. All-day breakfast has been the number one request from customers, according to

the famous fast food chain. In fact, more than 120,000 people tweeted McDonald’s asking for breakfast throughout the day in the past year alone, the company said. “I love breakfast,” said Goldstein, 16, of Lihue,

two locations! Enjoy a complimentary basket of fresh hot chips and a cup of salsa per table.

Happy Hour Daily 2 - 5 p.m.

NEW DINNER ITEMS In addition to Authentic Mexican Cuisine our menu also features Omelettes, Pancakes, and French Toasts as well as Club and Santa Fe Sandwiches, Vegetarian Burger and Mahi Mahi Sandwich.

flashing a big smile as she unwrapped her sausage McMuffin at the McDonald’s on Kuhio Highway in Lihue. “I like it better than their regular menu.” In the first month of the all-day breakfast launch, Goldstein said she has taken advantage of McDonald’s new breakfast for dinner option twice. In addition to McMuffin sandwiches and hash browns, the new all-day breakfast menu includes hotcakes, sausage burritos, fruit and yogurt parfaits and fruit and maple oatmeal. “We are thrilled about the

October launch of all-day breakfast,” said Melanie Okazaki, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii regional marketing manager. “We are always listening to our customers and know there is a high demand for McDonald’s breakfast items at all hours of the day. We look forward to offering our most popular breakfast menu items to our customers morning, noon and night.” At McDonald’s Lihue location, restaurant co-owner Darlene Chung said the sausage burrito has been the most popular breakfast menu item so far.

For $2.99, customers can get two sausage burritos, hash browns and a drink. “All the people I’ve talked to, they’re happy with it,” Chung said. “People like breakfast. They’re happy they can order it anytime of the day. It’s a great thing because I love the breakfast sandwich, sometimes in the evening. The people got what they wanted.” McDonald’s on island can be found in Lihue on Kuhio Highway, in Kukui Grove Shopping Center, in Walmart, Kapaa on Kuhio Highway and Eleele on Waialo Road.

CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

“T

o seek out new life, and new civilizations; to boldly go where Captain Cook — Hey! Wait a minute! Boldly going where CAPTAIN COOK has gone before?” Author and adventurer (and obviously another Star Trek geek! Yeah, baby!) Tony Horwitz has co-opted this well-known Star Trek beginning phrase to set the stage for his humorous and yet enlightening non-fiction book about Captain Cook’s journeys, entitled “Blue Latitudes.” Just as the fictional Captain Kirk did in the 23rd century, Captain Cook did

in the 18th century; both captains had the very same mission of exploration, except instead of a starship voyaging into space like Kirk had, Cook set out into the vast uncharted waters of the Pacific in a wood-built sailing tall-ship. That voyage ultimately introduced a wide swath of Pacific cultures to the perks and perils of contact with Western civilization. Just as Star Trek makes clear over and over … even a single exposure to an isolated society will forever change the way it operates. Over 200 years later, all of us who live here in Hawaii see the lasting influence of Cook’s arrival. In “Blue Latitudes,” author Tony Horwitz embarks on a voyage as a crew person on a replica of

Cook’s vessel with a colorful cast of characters as they retrace Cook’s trail across the Pacific Ocean, going from island to island to re-experience what Cook and his crew experienced (and, frankly, endured). With a keen sense of history and a clever wit, Horwitz examines the differences between now and then, both the good and bad, while recounting the many zany incidents he had while on-board and on land. This popular book in our store will make you think as well as laugh, but best of all, you will actually enjoy learning about Captain Cook’s historic travels! ••• ED AND CYNTHIA JUSTUS ARE OWNERS OF THE BOOKSTORE IN HANAPEPE.

Magic Continued from page 3

Manning also helped with the various magical props and set pieces, which required some creative engineering. “You have to be creative and think outside of the box to come up with these kinds of sets and costumes and props,” Ouye said. “Watching a lot of MacGyver helps.” The children’s theater has been on Kauai since 1996 and has put on countless shows over the years. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 4 p.m. at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall. Tickets are $10 at ticket outlets and online, and $12 at the door.

azue Taniguchi celebrated her 91st birthday Sunday. “I’ve been making and donating these quilts for a long time,” Taniguchi said during the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital Craft Fair on Saturday. “Maybe five, or six years.” People flocked through the hospital in search of early holiday gift ideas, and the coveted cookbook featuring veterans’ recipes for local dishes. “It’s available at the gift shop after the craft fair,” said Pat Pablo, KVMH Auxiliary

volunteer. “The gift shop is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.” Proceeds from the annual event benefit the KVMH Auxiliary, which raises funds for things not budgeted for the hospital. “We encourage people to join the Auxiliary for just $5 a year,” said Toni Torres, Auxiliary volunteer. “We’ve gotten a lot for the hospital — anything from a whirlpool for physical therapy to a television set for same day surgery, and even the wheelchairs for the beach outings.”
