n orchid that usually likes cooler temperatures sits in the far eastern corner of Al Sugano’s Koloa greenhouse; the coolest spot in the place. It’s his newest experiment and he’s doing everything he can to get it to bloom. When he does, it’ll be added to an entire room full of successes in varying colors and scents. “I like the challenge of growing new kinds, finding what works best with each variety,” Sugano said. Born and raised in Koloa, Sugano became fascinated with orchids while living
in Oregon, where he spent 40 years before returning to Kauai. “We just walked into the store and bought one of these,” he said. “I was interested to see if I could make them grow indoors.” It was 1990, and he joined an orchid club after working with them a bit outdoors. He said he caught the orchid fever when that first plant blossomed and soon his entire house was full of blooming plants. “My wife told me I had to move them SEE ORCHIDS, PAGE 6

Historic Hanalei bar, restaurant is the perfect place to unwind and two guitar players playing in front of an empty audience. It’s not everyday you get to hear slack key guitar, so it was nice having a front row seat to the action. I highly recommend coming for happy hour at Tahiti Nui for a couple of reasons. First off, it’s quiet and you can actually have a conversation over discounted drinks — $3 off mai tais and $1 off beer. Secondly, you can easily go over and find actor George Clooney’s seat (from the movie, “The Descendants”) without annoying a bunch of people trying to sit at the bar in peace. But let’s get back to the drinks. We both ordered a mai tai because frankly, every cute bar in Hawaii claims to have the best mai tai so as a reporter, it is my duty to be through and see for myself. To this day (and to my grave) the best
mai tai you’ll ever have is located on Oahu in a small little tiki bar called La Mariana. But Tahiti Nui’s mai tai is as tasty as it is strong, rivaling Gaylord’s at Kilohana and its signature mai tai for best cocktail on the island. What does stand out, however, is that Tahiti Nui has Kona Brewing Company’s Hanalei IPA on tap. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out. And if you have, you’ll understand how special it is to drink it on tap. While I was tempted to try their pizza, my girlfriend convinced me to share Aunty Louise’s Tahitian Poisson Cru. Fresh ono and ahi cooked in lime juice, coconut milk, onions, cucumber, Tomato and Ulu chips complimented my IPA extremely well. So well in fact, I had to order another round. Surveying the bar, pictures hung in every which direction on the wall with people en-
joying their drinks, playing slack key guitar or showing the beautiful history and parts of the island. If you haven’t been yet, don’t wait any longer. Looking back on the few months I’ve lived here, I regret not taking more opportunities to drive up to Hanalei to enjoy a drink or two with some live music playing in the background. As many bars tend to do as the sun sets, seats were becoming scarce near 5 p.m. so my girlfriend and I decided to pay the bill and drive back to Lihue to get ready for dinner. “It was really cute,” my girlfriend told me as we walked back to my car. And cute it was. The Garden Island/File photo It’s safe to say that my first visit to Tahiti One of Tahiti Nui’s famous mai tais stands Nui will not be my last. ready to go.

‘ISLAND’ A BETTER WORLD CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY
O
n this Garden Island of Kauai, there is certainly a movement to further sustainability, growing what we need right here. For some, this would be the first step in making a utopia right here in our own back yard. Author Aldous Huxley (famous for his classic dystopian novel “Brave New World”), imagined such a place near the end of his life. “Island”, which many consider Huxley’s best work, conceives of a utopia that goes far beyond sustainability, challenging
the very notion of “society” as we understand it. This beautifully written novel explores a utopian Polynesian society set on a remote island in the Pacific named Pala which has flourished for the past 120 years. Will Farnaby, the protagonist, is a sardonic journalist who was sent to Pala to find a way to acquire the wealth of oil reserves beneath the Island of Pala. He becomes shipwrecked on Pala, awakening to a leg injury and a life amongst a society who have kept themselves almost completely isolated from the entire world. Their culture has focused itself on refining the possibilities of eco-sustainability, self-actualization, self-improvement, spirituality, and pacifism even in the face of potential exploitation from the outside world. Through Will Farnaby, we vicariously experience his encounters with this culture and how his time with them changes him, his desires, and even his entire understanding of reality itself. To his surprise, it even gives him hope. Huxley’s final book is a wild read:

out, there were so many, “ he said. “So I built a greenhouse.” He continued using the greenhouse for his orchids when they moved back to Kauai in 2003, and now he has a floral rainbow behind his house. Some are just for cut arrangements and will saturate the room with their scent. Others do well when they’re hanging and there are also varieties that prefer pots. Prices range from $8 to $35 for each plant. Sugano knows how to care for all of them and can offer suggestions for the perfect environment for each orchid he sells. His next event is the Garden Island Orchid Society’s Spring Fantasy Show and sale, set for today and Saturday, at the Hanapepe United Church of Christ. On Tuesday, Sugano was already prepping the plants for the weekend. He had them separated onto two tables, with the plants that are a year old on one side and the two- and threeyear old plants on the other side. The older plants are better for shows, he said, because the blossoms are more mature. “I’ve got to make sure they’re looking nice,” he said.
One of Al Sugano’s orchids.
He’s got orchids for everyone, he said, including those who find growing the plant challenging. “I have one variety that’s very hard to kill,” he said. “It blossoms and is more hardy.” The varieties he’s chosen for the weekend show and sale are more tolerant of warmer weather, he said, which will give first timers a leg-up in keeping the plants thriving. The Spring Fantasy Show and Sale is from noon to 7 p.m. today. Garden Island Orchid Society and their member vendors Orchid Alley, Nancy Nakama, Gwen Teragawa, and Sugano will be selling orchids. Dennis Olivas will be giving expert advice on orchid care and doing demos, and a craft booth will boast items with orchid themes and the Garden Island Orchid Society cookbook. The show continues 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Hanapepe United Church of Christ is at 4481 Kona Road.
